I am pleased to report that although we did not set any new attendance records at our May 13, 2009 event, we did see a marked increase. Therefore, the Wounded Warrior & NC Handicapped Sportsmen fishing events will continue from 1-5pm on the second Wednesday of each month. We have been watching the numbers and were considering pulling the plug if participation no longer warranted rounding up volunteers and scheduling staff. These events are hosted by the NCWRC at it's John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center located right outside of Ft Bragg in Fayetteville, NC.  We will continue to work with officials at Ft Bragg and the NCHS to publicize and hopefully increase participation.

We had a lot of new folks at our latest event, therefore everyone assembled in the main classroom and received a welcome and introduction to the world of fly fishing.

Our main thrust at these events is fly fishing.  Some of our WW & NCHS, are physically unable to participate and some just plain do not have an interest in fly fishing. However they are still welcome. We have three ponds full of catfish and lots of Zebco spincast rods and reels to place in their hands. Spouses and children are also welcome - this makes for some quality family time.

Those who have been with us before are offered the opportunity to try their hand at fly tying. Today our newest volunteer, who hails from Rockingham NC, came to share his expertise in the art of tying foam bugs.

The test of a good fly, in this case a foam Chernobyl ant, is will it catch fish? This creation fresh from the tying vice of one of our participants passed with flying colors.

Warm water fish were our target today. The Pechmann Center has numerous one acre ponds which contain a variety of sunfish. This Wounded Warrior who had multiple scars on both legs and walked with a profound limp proudly displays his first flyrod caught bream.

Here is another first fish on a fly, in this case it was a good size crappie. We don't stock crappie in our ponds but they are indigenous to Lake Rim which is right across the street from the Pechmann Center. Our water comes by gravity flow from the lake and from time to time a small crappie will make the trip through the pipe. Once they are in our ponds they can grow to good size as all of our fishing is on a catch and release basis.

The hybrid stripped bass pond yielded some chunky and very feisty combatants that challenge many of our more experienced participants.

The catfish ponds received a good workout from the spincast folks. These ponds are full of channel cats which go all the way up to 10-12 pounds.

We had a few families that took advantage of the opportunity. I spoke to several of the wives who said they would pass the word about this great venue for some quality family time.

Our next Wounded Warrior & NC Handicapped Sportsmen event will be Wednesday, June 10, 2009 from 1-5pm.

.We are also holding a Warm Water Fly Fishing Clinic on Saturday, June 13th. Pre-registration is required for the clinic. You may pre-register by calling Lake Rim Park at (910) 424-6134
