My brother and I recently completed my first trip to Montana.  11 days; 2 for travel and 9 actually running around and fishing.  We stayed just outside of Lincoln for the first 4 days and fished various sections of the Blackfoot River and Landers Fork Creek.  The headwaters of the Blackfoot and Landers Fork were both small waters with good access and decent fishing for small cutthroat <10".  We fished these on the first day and while the setting was fantastic, the fishing was just okay.

The next two days were spent about 10-12 miles downstream from Lincoln on the Blackfoot.  We both caught 15-20 fish per day and probably should have done better.  Mainly dry flies (parachute adams, Stimulators) with a couple on streamers. All of the fish ran from 10-15".  On the second day, we found rising fish and caught (and missed) plenty on dry flies. The river was not at all crowded and it was a really good day.

The next 5 days were spent in the Bob Marshall Wilderness area.  Leaving the town of Augusta, we traveled 30 miles on dirt road and then rode horses 21 miles in.  This portion of the trip was with an outfitter who managed the horses, camp, food and all the necessities; however the fishing instruction we received was basically "here's the river, have at it."  Honestly, the fishing was good enough that no instruction was needed.  We fished Danaher Creek the first day, rode downstream to where it forms South Fork of Flathead on the second, and back at camp on Danaher the last day.  We had 20-30 fish days each place, but on the South Fork the fishing was absolutely stellar.  Six guys all caught over 20 trout, with the smallest measuring out at 12".  Most were over 15 and a few 18-19" were caught.  I streamer fished this day and after trying fancy streamers, ended up catching all of mine on an Olive Wooly Bugger.  Danaher fished well also, just smaller fish on dries.  All Cutthroat, which was fine with me because I had never fished for them before.

It was quite honestly a top 2 or 3 trip for me.  No phones, no outside noise and plenty of wilderness.
