Had a good friend come up from SC this weekend. He puts me on largemouth, catfish, stripers, crappie, gar, and deer down there, and he loves to fly fish; so I try to return the favor a couple times a year.

He wanted to catch some wild trout. And he had never caught a smallmouth or a native speck, so I figured we could fix that over the weekend.

Creeks are low and warm with the lack of rain and heat lately, so I figured elevation was in order. First afternoon, we went to a little nearby creek on the National Forest that is full of wild browns.

We arrived to an abandoned, large, dead putrid hog at the parking area. WTF?

Hit the creek. Water was low, but pune browns were hitting just fine.

My buddy caught a nice one about 12-13", but it didn't want its picture taken. He missed it on a dry fly, and tossed a wooly bugger back in there and it nailed it.

The sun started sinking low, so we headed for the river below my house to see if we could get him on some smallmouth. With the heat and low water, the bigger ones weren't hitting, but he had a ball catching a load of little smallmouth and rock bass (another species he had never caught.)

Back to the house for some jalapeno poppers, cedar-planked salmon, dirty rice, beer, Scotch, and sleep.

Up early the next morning to go after some specks. We hiked and bushwhacked a couple miles into one of my favorite little high-elevation speck creeks that I've never taken anyone to before.

We hit the creek, and within a few minutes, my friend had his first speck:

We fished a long ways up the creek, and specks were caught right and left. I have no idea how many we caught. Most were small, but colorful. I had one that looked 10" + come up out of a deep plunge pool and look at my fly, but it started dragging and he went back down and wouldn't hit anything after that.

Finally, we were running out of creek, and running out of energy. We started the long bushwhack back out.

It was a good weekend, and my flatlander buddy enjoyed himself thoroughly, I believe.

Damned good deeds you've done. Getting your buddy on some good, secret water, and on some fish he's never caught.

I enjoyed that. I've got to infiltrate a creek or two very soon.

I see that bamboo you're trying to sneak by

That's his, and it's a sweet one. He got ahold of a vintage blank somewhere (I think it's a Payne,) and had a guy custom build it for him. I told him he had to will it to me when he dies. I had to seize it for a few minutes and catch a couple fish on it myself.  ;D

that's good karma, right there.   you'll probably get rewarded with a nice buck on your next SC trip.  thanks for sharing the TR.

Lucky dog, you.

Haven't had much discretionary time lalely.

Pastor explains icons to my son: you know like the fish symbol on the back of cars.

My son: My dad has two fish on his car and they're both trout!
