More Social Distancing, but this time with the damn dam flows cut up to the mirror plant. It was low at 42 cfs and very clear. There were no fish rising but plenty of midges and a few bows, little black caddis or stones flying about. I fished with a girdle bug and caught a nice specimen early on. It was pretty slow with only the occasional fish to hand. I switched up the game and enticed a few punes to take a dry.

It's always a good spot to have a beer!

And retie leaders

And have a snack

And look at bugs

And take in the beauty

Arrived at the upper Mirror parking lot around noon. Two other vehicles in the lot. One guy was in the spot I had in mind, so I went down to the bottom of the big field and got in. Bing, bang, bam!!!  Three quick fish and then nada. Nice to get up there. First time this year. Graph showed 200 cfs. Perfect. 👍🏻

I got there a bit later and was the fifth car. I opened the hatch and popped the top on a beer and sliced up some cheese while I was deciding what to do, fish here or move on. Then this dude, in his spiffy new waders, boots, and vest, from Mt. Airy started to come over and he asked me if I fished here much before.

"This is my fifth day in a row," I grumbled at him with a lie as I hadn't fished this spot in a while.

"Wow, I fished here last November when the water was really low and I didn't catch anything, what's the secret out here" he replied.

"They are a pain in the ass," I said speaking of the fish. My comment took him aback, and I had to repeat and clarify my statement, "The fish are a pain in the ass!"

He walked in and I finished my beer and drove on!

Got up and hit the falling water after they stopped generation at 11 for the day. BWOs started to hatch in good numbers and I got a few fish to take an olive puff daddy. It was fun and games until the otters show up! Actually around 3:30 things slowed down a bit and the fish didn't come to hand for a while. I finally got a decent one to harvest and called it quits after that. The rain started when I got back to the car anyway.

The old yellow dog is showing some age and I don't think she'll make another winter.

Don't know who the huge fisherman is in the van with va tags, but he showed up after me.

Saw and heard two pairs of what I think were pileated woodpeckers.

Quit visit to the carp pond, it's now posted, bur people are going in to fish like these two kids, who have a better sense of balance than I do.

Anyway the next day I hit the upper smith on Saturday morning before the 1 pm generation, there were only two cars in the lot and I headed on down to Sally's pool, which I've renamed effin otter run!

Stepped into the river and thought I had that section to myself only to realize that I high holed two anglers. I moved up a bit and then realized they were moving down stream. I fished a puff daddy and got a fish to rise but struggled to get a hook up. So I drank a beer.

There were some caddis coming off and a few bwos, but not enough to get the fish excited.

So pretty much I was fishing over water that the other angles had beaten and I caught nothing.

Waiting for sulfurs...

Bar Harbor Kippers and beer for lunch!

With no daytime generation on the river for weekend I ventured out of quarantine and hit the road.
The lot was empty when I arrived but a dude from NC pulled up as I was gearing up. We exchanged distant pleasantries and I packed my vest with a couple of  beers and set out across the field to the otter run.

Bluebird skies

Caddis were coming off in the riffles and there were a few fish interested it chasing down a puff daddy.
Bad trout photos.. I don't know what the cause of that was, may be the Heavy Seas Tropic Cannon? 7.5 ABV and robust citric flavors might make this one of my favorite IPAs winning out over New Belgian's  Criticdellic

DSFK

Took a break for lunch, Bar Harbor Smoked Sardines, not too shabby.

Back on the water I continued to catch fish on the surface and take bad photos.

I even saw one sulfur! Things will be looking up before to long.

4/5/20 #16

Two days in a row escaping from NC and staying away from everybody.

The lot was empty again, but as I geared up a truck with a couple of guys drove up and a dude gets out to ask about access at this point, "do you walk down the track"? as he walked closer to me and I was getting ready to back up but he stopped 6 feet away, which I considered too close under the conditions.

#Staythefuckaway

Caddis were present but not in the numbers of yesterday, few fish rose and I targeted them. I missed more than I caught but that was alright.

After a while I sat down for a break and a beer.

Midges

And stones

I sat there and watch the river, listening to the birds and looking for risers.

After a while I set the camera down and recorded 18 minutes...

lots of bird and a number of fish rising.

The day was getting long and I was getting hungry.

Not a bad way to spend the day in isolation.

I didn't see anybody of the river but I did hear some voices moving on down the trail.

saw otters, kingfishers, woodpeckers, osprey, muskrat

Ok, I admit it. I watched all 18 minutes ( and found it quite relaxing). Probably the closest I will get to the Smith this Spring. It also shows me that I must be going mad. Keep it up Woolly, heck I might just watch it again!
