Kicking off the 2018 version of this thread with some low country action.  Chartreuse and white clouser was the ticket. I don't know about you guys, but this winter has been brutal here in the piedmont. I feel the warm water season getting ready to bust open after a couple 70 degree days.

It's back to normal Feb. weather this week.  But I plan to check to see if the white bass are running this week.

We're looking at a possible total rainfall of 20" over the last two weeks here so my fishing is non existent. Still haven't wet a line this year. Our crappie will probably have their spawn ruined this year.

I was just thinking about whether or not the Stripers were running yet...  I heard the Shad are in Richmond already.  Now I'm plotting a schedule adjustment to do a float trip.

Between this and turkey season coming up, how do we get anything done in the spring?

2018 -19

This is the third year that I've made a trip up to Richmond to fish the shad run with Itieunglyflies. ON the way I stop in and fish the White Bass run with Driver. Sunday afternoon might not be the best time to find solitude on the river and as I approached the river there were a bunch of spin fishermen on the banks of the river. I headed on upstream and fished some spots that had been productive in the past. Driver joined my shortly and when the spin guys leapfrogged around us with their stringers half full of 14 plus inch fish, we headed on down to where they had been as we really didn't have a lot of time to hike down to the lower sections of the river. Driver hooked up first and then I got into a couple. Not exactly on fire, I blamed the heavily stained water. The Driver had to take off so we headed back to the vehicles for a beer, he drove off to family activities and I got back on the road to Richmond.

4/2/18
2018 -20
I checked into my hotel and then headed over the bridge and down the road to the Stone Brewery for an evening of fun. As I crossed the river I saw dozens of fishermen on the bank, bridge and in boats. A few minutes later I pulled into Stones Parking lot, unfortunately the sign said that they were closing two hours early for Easter Sunday.  I got a Tangerine IPA and took it outside. I sat down next to a couple at a picnic table and enjoyed some good conversation and laughs. The guy went back in for another round but they had invoked last call and wouldn't pour at twenty till six. He attempted to outsmart them and purchased a sixer. When there friend arrived, they handed him a bottle and he took one sip, then a beer nazi swooped and snatched it off the table admonishing them that bottled beer couldn't be consumed on premise. Then the dude that purchased the bottles was gesticulating and knocked over my IPA, damn it!  After that I headed down the road to try out Triple Crossing Brewery and grab a pizza for dinner. Strange brewery with lots of sours, most of their beers were offered in 10 or 13 ounce pours despite their low gravity. I had a Waxing Poetic - Blood Orange and Grapefruit sour 13 oz pour for $6.50, but with taxes it came to $7.36! I asked how did we get from six fifty to seven thirty six. Taxes!
I enjoyed the pricy beer and went back for a 16 oz Salinity Sour - Gose ad put my order in for a pizza! The barmaid set my pint down on the edge of the rubber mat and then knocked it over, "That's the second time tonight somebody has spilled my beer!" I cried. "It must be you," shouted two customers behind me as the barmaid poured a second pint for me.

I watched the sunset as I drank my beer and ate my pizza, leaving half for breakfast in the morning.

Back at the hotel I settled in watching a Star Wars marathon and tried to get some sleep before the 4:50 alarm went off.

I was amazed at the amount of early traffic on I-85, I made the short drive to the boat ramp and pulled in behind Itieuglyflies at a quarter till six.

The boat was launched and gear loaded in short order and we motored out into the river on a chilly windy morning. We anchored up on spot number one and bracing against the wind we waited for the sun to rise. We were alone at first but a little later we were joined by almost silent sculling teams as they worked their way down the river at the stand of the tide.
As dawn broke we cast into the ebbing tide and our flies swung down and across the channels where we imagined schools of shad holding. It wasn't long before we began hooking up with the hickory. But Fred wasn't happy with the hook up rate, we blamed the weather and everything else, but we were still catching fish, and those forked tailed anadromous fish fight well and put a bend in the rod.

It was a mixed bag and we caught herring, yellow perch, and I even caught (snagged) three gizzard shad and ITUF caught a striper.

We had a couple of doubles.

We saw an osprey chasing after a bald eagle.

Well the fishing was slow enough to leave what few fish there were to find more fish.

Kyle says, "Don't leave fish to find fish!"

We moved up the river among several other boats, some of which were leaving as we dropped anchor, indicating that it was slow there as well.
But we caught a few hickory and then I got into an American, you can tell right off the bat the power that these larger fish possess.

Things slowed down there too and we moved on down to the American Hole as ITUF calls it. There he got to catching, first cast a hickory, second cast another hickory, third cast an Ameican! Damn.

We caught a few more and by 4 o'clock I was done and we headed back to the ramp. While ITUF was getting the trailer, two Virginia Marine Police struck up a conversation with me and asked to see my license. I told them that I didn't have it on me but they could call it in and verify that it was valid, and that I had just been checked on the Smith River a few weeks ago. They held onto my driver's license while the boat was pulled out and unloaded. They confirmed that my license was current and then proceeded to check for life jackets but never asked ITUF for his fishing license.

That's all for now....

I have been craving the shad run for a few years. Growing up in tidewater VA, I had seen the run at it's peak, then saw it die.
That was pre-obcessive fly fishing. I messaged Itieuglyflies after last years posting by he and Woolly. Can I get in the action?
Lo and behold, it came to be this week. Woolly took more pics, we caught more feesh.  ;D
It was not an epic day by Fred's quota, but I was thrilled. No Americans to the boat, but a striper, some herring and lots of hickory shad to hand.

Got delayed by an accident on 95 by a few minutes and my host had already gotten the bote in the water. Loaded my gear and got to his hot spot.
Early bird gets the worm. Anchored up, broke out his coffee, muffins and conversation. The only interruption waiting on some daylight were the university crew boats rowing down the river. Fred stood to cast and one 4 man bote passed inbound of us. That was uncalled for!
But the first fish was soon to hand and it was game on.

A big ass tug came churning up the river. The falls are just above use and no barge for it is in sight. WTF?
Welcome to downtown.  -0-

Old Fenwick and Martin multiplier got her done.
Fred is the man. Coffeed me, beered me, feed me, boated me, flied me.
Eternally grateful.  bd;0
Went to leave and I-95 was a demolition derby, again. Took the long way home.
All was fine, Pho take out on the inbound.
Slept like a sore armed baby.

After working outside yesterday, decided it was time to Shad fish.  Went downtown this morning in my canoe and caught about 2 dozen hickories and small perch.  Nice morning to be out, saw a lot of fly fishermen throughout the whole stretch.
Few pics of the Richmond skyline..

If the canoe was green it was me.  I was there around 8 and stayed until 10.  Fishing was good, seemed everyone was into them.  I saw a group of 4-5 boats just upriver of the 95 bridge, looked like a lot caught up there.  I was going to paddle that way but with the winds picking up decided to head out.

Easy 30 minute or so drive from home, can't beat that.

Even the best made plans get changed on occasion.  Such was today.  After a week of watching water, trying to figure out clarity and flows, and making a plan to float a new to us river, we arrived to a closed ramp and logs nearly across the river.

So on to plan B.. an hours drive west.  Crossed the mountains on 33, and saw a lot of hillside washed away from all the rain these past few weeks.

Water upon arrival was at good flows, but cloudy and not ideal for fishing.  Can't give up a good day to fish, we embarked and gave it a good try.  3 fish to hand, a large snapping turtle, bald eagle, and a few carp feeding made it a good day.

Rising early and on the water not too long after sunrise yesterday morning. My river surprised me with far less clarity than I prefer. The rains we've had were still showing their effects on the river. Muddy. This sucks as I can't see where the hell I'm supposed to step without busting my ass or finding myself over my head in dingy water.

I pressed on several hundred yards. Fishing sucked. No smallmouth. I did get to cast my new 8 wt. and try out the new reel, however. I have this one spooled with sinking line. Makes a big difference getting the fly down.

In the end I did find myself pulling in one of the chunkier rock bass I've seen in this area. Fatso.

Took Doug's improved toon down the river after work for a test float.  She did good. Like the set up.  Fishing was alright.  Numbers were good and size smallies kept it fun, nothing big though.

It went down the river. Would not want to try that section at much lower water.
Dumbass rookie on the sticks. Got us hung good once. Partially hung twice.
Figured out the towers still need to come down about 1 1/2". And I need another foot to the oars.
I was not getting enough of a bite in the water.
New shafts ordered this AM. Sawzall goes to work later today.

Round 2.

Saw some tabks but they are old and wise.

Small ones still count.

I suppose this is heresy because it was not with a fly rod but I was fishing and they were biting what I was throwing. I had a fly rod along but saw no reason to change as long as I was getting a consistent bend in my rod.

My ride this morning.

First cast. It is going to be a good morning
(https://i.imgur.com/E2cRxaq.jpg)

Two more so far. Here is a nice one
(https://i.imgur.com/VuS13Mb.jpg)

Two more since that big one. It is definitely going to be a great morning. Most are coming up for an old style Pop-R (I gave most of my bass tournament gear away years ago but kept a few items just in case)

I have missed a half dozen or more before finally getting a solid hook up on this one.  All going back as the owner says "catch & release" - works for me!

Another nice one. This is a good day.

Big bass of the day LOL. I guess he thought if he ate that plug he would not have to eat again for a week.

I caught a couple more including this nice one but they seemed to have turned off about noontime. Probably about 20 in all and at least 10 misses or loss before getting to the boat. Got 2 that were about 4 pounds, the rest a pound and half or maybe two. Couple less than a half pound. Wish I had someone here local to share it with. Difficult to fish and keep the canoe under control at same time. Also hard to take photos with your $700 phone which is waterproof but not loss proof if it goes over the side. All in all a very good day.

Damn nice day right there.  Good old Pop-R. A timeless good topwater bait.
Those bass look a little stunted. Or is my eyesight just too old ?

Probably a little bit of eyesight and truth about stunting.   Like all small ponds the fish soon out-eat their food source.  Actually the owner says keep any less then 14 inches and release the bigger ones. My freezer is full of trout and crappie and I am about to head to Alaska for salmon fishing so elected to release them all.  When I have someone with me they bring a cooler and take the smaller ones home. Same with my pond near my cabin in VA.

Pre rain, topwater smallies and trash.

Ole redeye

Theres a pool with some big ones that you can sight fish. For the big guys you only have one shot at. Tossed the ole bug in and this bruiser pushed all the others out of the way.

You know that I know that you know.
You could pack in a 40 cu.yd. dumpster and won't make a dent in it.
Total sketch. Nice fish to be had, though.

Local smallies:

Pressured water; easy access.

This guy couldn't resist; practically flew outta the water for the bug. Topwater smallies is the best.

One thing I miss about GA is I had a pond down the road from house that was loaded with big brutes of bluegill.  You could always count on catching a couple of those and they fought really good on a fly rod.  Georgia had a good climate for pond bluegill.

So when are you going to float the 27 mile stretch of your local.....

That might be more than I could handle...maybe a three day float? Sure the fishing would be good though!

I'm getting senile.  It is only 19.8. Lets do this Sept 2019 or whenever the smallies bite best in VA.  If you want to oar with a tested sidekick, I can bring my own ride.

Gonna be tough to get a float in this year...bent the axle on my trailer last trip...parts should be in soon, but between repairs, river continually blown out, etc...who the hell knows!? Will holler at ya'll if it can come together!
