Had one near here attack a guy in a hammock on Hazel Creek awhile back. They usually have to close a bunch of backcountry campsites every year in the Smokies because of aggressive bears.

This is getting close to home.   I learned to swim at Douthat State Park  - very familiar with the area.  I might need that .357 after all.

There are many bear in Bath County.  Everyone is seeing them.  Combine the bear, coyotes, copperheads, and rattlesnakes and you have the perfect storm.  I would not suggest visiting and attempting to fish.

I always laugh when someone on the news or wherever is talking about a local bear incident, and they always say "a black bear did whatever...." Like we have grizzlies, polar bears, Kodiaks, and Himalayan sun bears roaming around here too? Or maybe some purple or orange ones?

Funny how some fukkos perpetuate and even breed unbeknownst to them all the while, that a guardian angel offers them a tomorrow in the form of gratuities which are in turn seen as vices by nimmus roddis extraordinanus. Yes, really entitled.

<Maley was reportedly attempting a solo trip between Ketchikan and Petersburg when she stopped at the U.S. Forest Service cabin in Berg Bay, she wrote. The cabin is located 22 miles southeast of Wrangell, according to the Forest Service's website.
"I had just carried my tent, food, and all my gear into the cabin to dry while I went on a 4 mile hike that begins just behind the cabin. I heard something outside as I ate my lunch, and well, I never got to go on that hike," Maley wrote.
After the bear left, Maley said she dragged her kayak closer to the cabin and swam to a nearby boat for help. She ended up in Wrangell, she wrote, where she began repairing her damaged kayak.>  CBS News

Love the fact that he has adapted and survived - but those are the bears that many times look to a human as a good meal. This would be especially true of small humans such as kids.

Damned right.

It is rather challenging to forget a news story such as this.

QuoteA black bear attacked and killed a logger in his trailer, then returned several times to eat the body, authorities said. State wildlife officials said it is rare for a black bear to kill a human, but bears have been known to eat the remains of people who died in the wilderness. But evidence in Cotopaxi, about 100 miles southwest of Denver, indicated the bear killed Colin McClelland, 24, of Buena Vista. "It is really unusual, but more unusual is the attack. . . . It appeared the initial attack took place inside that trailer," said Fremont County sheriff's Lt. Dale Rea.

My former employer once had a hunting lease on a parcel of peanut farm land/swamp near Plymouth NC.  His wife once took to the tree stand, and after a bit, a bear found her and proceeded to climb up the tree where she was perched on her climber.  The bear was apparently interested in the odor she was emitting...she was menstruating.  She shoood the bear and threatened to shoot it.  The bear responded appropriately and left her alone.

I hunted the lease and was amazed at the quantity of crap in the fields.  Although the bears were thick as fleas in the area, I never saw a single one whilst hunting there.

Just talked to my father who was telling me about a farmer near us (South of Lynchburg, north of Danville) who decided to raise organic hogs. Bought some nuts of some sort and put them in a creep feeder for the hogs, and a bear got into it. Hogs approached the creep feeder with bear near it and bear killed 6 hogs. Didn't eat any of the hogs, but apparently was just defending its new found feeder.

We belong in the woods just as much as the bears. Or at least some of us do. We didn't evolve in some suburb eating gluten-free tofu and wearing Birkenstocks and driving Priuses (Priusi?), as much as some people seem to think that is our natural state of being. Humans, at the base, are bloodthirsty predatory woodland animals that can hold their own with the best of them.

Dang! @peter p , New Jersey and Bears in the News! This was my old stomping ground in the late 60s ...

A Boy Scout troop leader was mauled by a bear after he and three Scouts stumbled upon the animal in northern New Jersey on Sunday, the Rockaway Township Police Department said.

The three Scouts accompanying him were unharmed, officials said.

The Boy Scout leader, Christopher Petronino, took the three Scouts to a cave at Split Rock Reservoir in Morris County, which is about 25 miles west of New York City. The 50-year-old had known about the cave since the 1980s but had never witnessed a bear using it before, according to CNN affiliate WCBS.

When Petronino entered the cave Sunday afternoon, a black bear reached for the Scout leader's foot, biting him on the leg, shoulder and arm, according to officials. Petronino then hit the bear with a rock hammer, curled up into the fetal position and shouted to the boys to call for help. 4

This is just an observation, but eastern nc is full of bears. Even my little town outside of Wilson now has a healthy population. Without trail cameras, you'd never know. I wonder if its just the natural food year round.  They NEVER get into cans around here.

I encountered a number of bears in the SNP back in the 80s, while traversing and sampling all the streams.  I learned much about bear trails, sign, etc. in environs where they are protected, but I never had a problem or was ever spooked.

It may be age, it could be a lack of fitness like running or agility to climb a tree, it might be the news of unprovoked attacks, but now I am awkwardly mindful of the big black critters.   So wary that I renewed my conceal carry permit and picked it up at the Bath courthouse yesterday.  Hopefully carrying a .357 will end looking over the shoulder when enjoying the Allegheny Highlands.

My feeling is there are too damned many of them, at least in my area, and maybe even in other areas like the SNP.  My son has as many bear as deer on his game cam --- less than ½ miles from downtown Mountain Grove.

I may purchase a VA bear tag this year.

I agree.  I think I'd definitely carry spray out west where you have grizzlies.  Out here I feel plenty fine with a .357 if not better than I would with spray.  Black Bears are funny.  Why do not attack often, but when they do, they mean business.  Grizzlies will attack you just because they are pissed at you and leave you afterwards.  If a black bear attacks you, it will eat you.  Heard plenty of stories of a person who "played dead" with a black bear only to have the black bear start to eat them.

Bear spray?  I can't hit my own feet with the spray Lotrimin.  How would I come close to a charging bear with a spray of a dried fruit used for spice and seasoning?

With the firearm, there's at least the opportunity  to shoot myself in the head before the sons-a-bitch completely gobbles me.

Bear spray is legit.   We tested some last time I was in MT and it shot about 20-30 ft and we all were about choked out from the after spray.  Pro tip, when testing it take into account which direction the wind is blowing.

We decided the best option if attacked would be to spray ourselves in the face so we wouldn't notice a grizzly was eating us.

Reminds of a story one of the CPA's in the office told me.  She carries mace with her everywhere she goes and one day she had the mace out while in the office alone.  She got to thinking about how she has never used mace before and it was an old can.  She decided to test it out in her office and spray the corner of the room.  That stuff got in the air of that office and got into her eyes so bad she had to go home and wash it out.

So, your unpalatable text reads:

Crowd-sized pepper spray sucks very badly. I can't imagine the actual bear stuff. From the videos I've watched, it'd be hard to miss the bear. Keeping your composure while it's charging would be the challenge.

As for bear spray, I can only assume that it works and one would find it worth every last cent of the $42.67 it costs at Field and Stream...should they ever need to use it  n!n

I took a dose of commercial crowd control spray to the face from like 2 ft away. It was enough for probably 20 people, maybe more. I was drenched like if you soak someone with a water hose.

It wasn't fun. I wouldn't give him the satisfaction of going to the ground though, so I did without water to rinse with or to drink for 30 minutes. Cops, family, property damages.

The next morning was Thanksgiving, and also it was my birthday. Not good. Costs and grudges lingered for quite some time.

I don't miss that portion of my wilder days.

I predict it is just a matter of time before someone in my area has a bad bear day.  Last year, or maybe 2015, a hiker on the eastern side of the county was attacked.  Officials killed the bear, but after analysis they discovered it was the wrong bear.  No worries; there's just too many, way too many.

Everyone is seeing them and encountering them while fishing, hiking, and camping.  Bear hunters are loving it – tree and release is the latest rage.  Multiple reports of killing fawns, so I'm purchasing a bear tag this fall, and I have absolutely no desire to kill one, but their numbers just don't match the habitat ------another of Mother Nature's symmetries screwed by humans.

SJWH – maybe there's an unbalance that explains the western phenomenons.

I can agree with that, plus too much asphalt, concrete, and manicured lawns.  Can't take out humans, so we best teach the Mormons, Catholics, their followers, and all the other global procreation zealots how to use rubbers.  Or when WMT and River finally dump their wives or SOs and declare their perpetual love for each other, we can support them and all their same-sex kind  --- they ain't proliferating.

We have had to keep our trash inside due to 2 bears that have been roaming about 2 square miles around here and tearing up all sorts of shit. Most of the neighbors within a mile also keep the garbage inside until the day of the pick up. 2 weeks ago, I had 2 paw prints on the window of my Tahoe.

One of these 2 bears is a monster. I got a look at him 3 weeks ago and he is 2 feet thick through the ass. It was almost dark and the flash on my camera wold not quite reach him dammit.

Bears getting into cars and trash isn't anything new in Asheville.  The picture below is of the largest of the bears that frequents my street.  This is a pic of him last fall, he's bigger now.  The neighbors all call him "big bubba".  He's one of the few large bears to not have been caught and collared for the urban bear study.  I'd say 80% of the bears we see are collared.  I live literally in the city, 1.5 miles from the center of downtown Asheville.  What's interesting to see is how well the bears adapt to avoid people and avoid yards with dogs in them.

We're about 8 miles east of Mars Hill, NC

Spoke to a dude that lives on Little Snake Creek in Carroll county that witnessed on two different occasions a bear munching on fawns in his back yard.  He said the two area sows both had triplets this year.

This one was seen in our area (about 4 miles from here) a few days ago. JT says it looks like 500-600 lbs. to him from looking at the photo.

I keep a Deer Camera on the edge of the back lawn at my cabin in Basset. Checked it this past weekend and see I have a young bear making the rounds. I hope he keeps moving.

I have lots of deer photos as well. One thing I notice at this time of the year is deer with lots of ticks taking up residence in the deer's ears. I watch the deer from my kitchen window and this past weekend notice a lot of "grooming" by one deer on another deer around the ear area. It seems they are trying to either pull the ticks off or maybe just relieve the itch.

I've seen several bears recently – some very close to The Grove.

Several evenings each week I take a drive on the local backroads, with the beagle, bird book, and glass – looking for critters, particularly new birdies.  Last week I saw the damnedest thing  --- a deer about 100 meters out in a un-mowed hay field – with only the eye the deer appeared to have short black, velveted horns, but with the glass it was a red winged blackbird perched between her ears pecking the top of her head.  Another rw blackbird flew up from the ground to her back, ahead of her tail and started gleaning her spine area.   Ticks?  Other inverts?  Never seen it before.

In Africa birds dine on insects and worms that infect critters. Maybe birds are adapting here now that there are so many ticks and other vermin. I remember last year seeing deer with their ears almost twice there normal size due to infestations of ticks.

Just saw momma bear again, without the cubs. From what I've read, I'm guessing the two cubs with her on June 2 were yearlings (30-50 pounds?)  If so, they would split up around this time of year.

That's our third bear visit this month that we know of, plus we saw a young one about two miles from here and another adult about five miles away.
