Title: Float trip
Post by: sanjuanwormhatch on June 17, 2015, 14:34:22 PM
Anyone know of any rivers that fit the following criteria
1. roughly 6 hours of floating
2. nothing about class II
3. ability to camp
4. decent fishing generally near about half way point of float (half way point being the stop for night)
5. closer to SWNC the better although least of worries.

i have a few in mind.  pm's are find.

Fishing is what it is though, the rest is a great situation for MANY different overnight options and many put in and take out opportunities.

Would this be an adult outing or child friendly?

Pigeon, Little Tennessee, FB, and Tuck all have sufficient watershed sizes and flow output rates to support boats with gear.  Camping infrastructure is probably scant if you want to keep things legal.  The Little t may flow through some game land or NF.  This may be an opening for legal public camping.

'preciate the advice from everyone.  In my research yesterday I found about 3 other options that I've added to the trip cache.

This is a drunk adult (so pretty much children) trip.  Going to try to fish some but mainly focusing on getting out.  We decided to stick with the original plan and shoot a few Class III's in deliverance country.  Should be interesting.

Lots of places on the Nolichucky
A starter is at Banks Farm Campground  Exit 15 off I-81

The New has a lot of put in's also, such as Zaloos at West Jefferson.

Both of those made the short list.  There was also a very interesting one in North Ga. I'll be getting too sometime soon.  Maybe fall.

There just aren't that many rivers in my part of the world that are a) somewhat remote, b) contain fish, and c) are big enough to float on, nevermind d) have a long enough float to sustain an overnight float.

This particular river is a), c) and does have d) but to do d) would require some pretty gnarly whitewater and a pretty early start which we def din't have.  The part with b) is not really floatable unless you go later in the year when all parts of the river cool down.

So that's all to say, the floating trip turned into a floating and drinking trip with a class IV rapid to end it.  (There is GoPro footage of everyone running the class IV in one of those duckies.  I haven't seen it yet but I expect it to be thoroughly entertaining).  Liquid courage was our friend.  We then got shuttled back to our put in to camp.  Great campsite - flat, spacious and literally right on the river and, to top it off, there was a rope swing steps from my tent.  It def required a hike in that was just a wee bit too far for the amount of food, booze and toys we brought in but no matters.  It's amazing what's tolerable after a few beers.

Some pictures from the night before.  We got into some tomfoolery.  I was happy to see my bed sunday night.

Looks like you should have let a friend borrow that Hawaiin shirt. The pic with the rafts pulled ashore, that dude walking away got a little toasty.

We used to rent canoes in college from the uga outdoor center and camp and float section 2 of that river. Had to lie to them about where we were going because they wouldn't give em to us otherwise. Mid may saw some trout caught in that section and some monster browns sighted (few and fare between) but they seek thermal refuge or go up the cool feeders soon after that and shut down. The redeye bass are fun in the warmer months though

It's a fun little river.  Met some of the characters that frequent it to.  Def want to go back in the fall.

Sweet.   Looks like a fun time.  Hate I couldn't take you up on the opportunity to join you.

One day I may actually fish that river.

I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to fish it but there are a lot of interesting things to do on it.  Fishing can be good just not sure it justifies a trip fromt he blue line nirvana.
