Title: Rattlesnake Part II (tR)
Post by: Dee-Vo on July 15, 2015, 18:59:55 PM

http://youtu.be/-4qUXcXuMSE (http://youtu.be/-4qUXcXuMSE)

I hit this creek on a couple different occasions some time ago, but wanted to go further. Mission accomplished. I made a trek of approximately 2-2.5 miles each way this time around. During one of the past outings here, I came pretty close to getting too personal with a timber rattler (around 8ft between me and the snake). I really can't help but think about that incident every time I'm even remotely close to that area exploring a creek. Today would be no different, actually worse.

Located a walking stick, let's do this.

What are these? They were very "opened up" and full on my hike in, but on the return trip they were closed up and kind of shriveled. Interesting.

Hoards of these to be had. Some damned nice natives here as well. Unfortunately, I broke one of the largest off, but seen many more.

Mr. Brown made an appearance. I didn't expect that.

Black Forest ham and cheese. Hard to beat while sitting on a log in a creek like this. Eat lunch, catch trout.

At this point things started to get interesting. I reached a point on the creek where several large trees had been blown across, almost damming it up. They were "stacked" so high that I couldn't see over or past them. Numerous fish swam in that pool, some of proper size as well.

The obstruction forced me to hit the land, and crawl/climb over. Threw one leg over, and the other, landed on my feet only to see this, maybe 3 or 4 feet from where my feet had planted:

That'll wake you up real quick. I think the second snake was a water snake, but it still aided in stopping of my heart when I dropped off that dead fall. This made the long hike back to the truck interesting. Walk softly.

A sign of the glorified goat population:

That was definitely a brown britches encounter.  I have yet to meet a rattler while out in the woods.

Good report, and nice pics. Pretty rattler, too. Don't see nearly as many as I used to. And so far, in over four decades of rambling around in the mountains, I have yet to encounter an aggressive rattler. They usually just try to crawl away when they see you. I've almost stepped on a couple over the years. Wild seeing a rattler and a water snake snuggled up together.

The plant is manroot/wild sweet potato vine (Ipomoea pandurata.) Nice shot of the rattlesnake plantain orchid too, fits the theme.

Jealous you got to see a rattlesnake on the stream and not step on it.  Have yet to see one.  Good report.  V:;

Man, you gotta get higher up in the mountains, never seen a rattler once in the mountains on a blue line.  Actually the only snake I've seen on a stream was this snake and it was at 4,000' in April sitting on a rock in the middle of the stream trying to thaw out.

High up on a Tennessee blueline.
Still the biggest snake I've ever seen in the wild.

That's a real pretty rattler.

Do you prefer Hillshire Farms or Oscar Meyer?

This location would maybe be a little over half of that elevation. I'll get something on my mind throughout the week, and hit it when the opportunity arises. Sometimes it's not so great. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Ever see them snakers in the trees on your way up via the power lines?
There's all kindsa critters up there. A healthy population of ticks, chiggers and salamanders. Rattlers are the least of your problem if you don't fuck with them. ^-^

I'm no salamander expert, but I don't think it's a hellbender. My guess would be Dusky.

At a glance I thought maybe a young hellbender but I don't know...this is my only reference.

Phall, you're going to have to give a warning. Damn. My boss/owner is 5 feet behind the computer monitor, co-worker 5 feet to my right, and the daughter of said boss walking up behind me. Real nice, and from the length of that video this computer was trying to load so when I fast-forwarded to the specified time, and seen the daughter walking up behind me I couldn't get it to pause, or anything. It's all good. Livened my day up for sure, I needed that.   -+;

 MANY years ago, near Roan Mt trial (AT) I 'bout stepped on a rattler and I nearly left my skin, it remained calm and moved calmly off the trail.
What's up with the pda between different species?

I've been wondering the same thing. Initially, I thought maybe the water snake was a smaller, juvenile, or something. If you look closely, the tail of the "water snake" is very blunt, and odd looking. The mixing of colors and whatnot is not a rarity nowadays.
