It didn't look like the forecast of 73 and sunny as we suffered through a cool and drizzly morning without seeing any carp or hearing many of the brood vi cicada. But gradually the skies cleared and the volume of the chirping reached 72 db. As the day wore on the action heated up and more and more carp were spotted.

I tied some ugly things on a #1 b10s, after four refusals, I stole one fro driver that was on a #2 or 4, it looked something like this except he used a holographic plastic from the craft store for the wing

My version is based on Harry Steeves UFO pattern. It has been very effective and durable.
They say variety is the spice of life however so I'm changing it up this year and whipping out a few of these. I have no doubt that they will work but I am concerned with how well they will hold up. Super glued on foam makes me nervous. 20+ pound carp will probably destroy these but hey, they look good...

J and I decided to get in on the
action inaction.
We met early after Fin crayfished out. Again! And headed south.
Nearing the destination we stopped for gas, snacks and more hydration.

LoginWe motored over to our first target area and saw lots of live and dead bugs on the water and quite a few flyers.
But no eaters. We saw one big cruising fish.
We rounded the point and we both saw a feeding common at the same time. I slapped it down and it refused it.
It turned away and circled. I slapped it down again and got a solid take. Game on!
I easily kept it out of the wood, then he turned all big boy on me and sounded. It was close to 5 minutes before we saw him again and a few more before J netted him.

He cast, I motored.
He cast, I motored.
He cast, I motored.
He.....well, you get the picture.
We saw zero more feeding fish. We saw a minimal number of cruisers.
J had a grassie nose his fly once. Excruciating.
Then, he finally had a strike!

J and I finally threw in the towel and headed for the ramp shit show take out. Bunch of stupid humans.
We finally got loaded up and snacked on some pulled pork in the parking lot.
Hit the road afterwards. J drove, I continued to drink.
7 hours of driving, 1 carp, 1 bluegill.

Odd. What was the weather like? The salt was not pleasing as well.

Sunny, a little breezy. Lots of boat/jet ski/human traffic. I think it's on the downside. Like our Sunday last year. The switch got flipped. I cast for 45 minutes and watched Jabob after that. I drank a lot. I was happy.

Long friggin day for a bluegill.
Like Doug said it was a pretty slow day, with one exception.
Bully, Aaron(not AK) and I had the kayak armada out on the water. Bully got a small common early and I totally effed up the hook set on another. About 30 minutes later a saw what looked like a tarpon inhaling cicadas. First cast and it was on. Pretty sweet to fight a fish like that in a kayak. After that. Nada. We explored about as far as you can paddling an didn't see another fish. I still walked away smiling.

Catching up...
This is the 18th year of the semi-annual Psycho Fly Fishing gatherings, I've been to a lot of them over the years, missed too many, so I made an extra effort to be there all four days this year, but when Rhody called and said "lets chase some cicada eating carp" I headed a little further west.
We saw plenty of carp, but most weren't interested in eating naturals or our imitations. We both hooked into some large commons that took us to the trees and broke us off. The wind picked up and that didn't help, but we had beer!
Maybe we were on the wrong part of the lake, but finally I hooked into a large grassie, thirty-six inches long with a Buddha belly, it weighed in at thirty plus pounds.
With thunderstorms popping up we called it a day and I drove on to the PFF in Shady Valley.

Login I tied these up on 1/0 Mustad C70s D Big Game Light 2x heavy / standard which are about the same size as a #2 B10S which we were bending on the last outing. Jason thought they would be too heavy but this was the fly that worked for me...
