It's a new year. Get at it.
I had to use what resources I had available today. At least the rod got bent.

Local Orvis shop set up an event they called Shadfest, to introduce people to the Shad run in Raleigh. I had never fished with Shad so I was intrigued and went to their intro event, fly tying night, half day fishing saturday and full day sunday.
Pretty good setup at the intro event they had free Sweetwater beer and wild game hor d'oeurves (buffalo meatballs, smoked salmon, bacon wrapped chukar) Fly tying night they had free beer and that turned into one person trying to teach 30 to tie. So I ended up working with 5 or so people helping them tie clousers and shad darts. Saturday and Sunday we headed out to Milbournie Dam to try our luck on shad.
Saturday didn't have a ton of luck managed one shad, but it was fun. Orvis brought out 3 boats to try and help people get on the fish.

Sunday we got out there at 9 and fished until about 1. They were staying later but my wife and I had some errands to run. No free beer this time but they did provide Smithfield's fried chicken and hush puppies. Managed 5 shad and a good size white bass, and a tiny minnow I didn't realize was on until I couldn't cast right a few times in a row. Pretty fun weekend of fishing and I will never complain about free beer and food.

Yeah all I got was Gizzards, from the boats on Saturday they did manage one Hickory and one American. I think it is pretty early in the run still, I plan on going back a little further into the run to try and hook up with some big Americans.
Nice redhorse. All you fellas did some good work this weekend.

I do apologize but figured you wouldn't want to drive up to Raleigh to hang with the Whorvis guys just to get it. 0:0
Now that it's daylight savings time, I could see running up there in the afternoon and fishing till darkish! I might even pack the toon for some floatage! Love me some anadromous fishes!
we could always goto Weldon. My trolling motor is fucked at the moment, but parts are on the way
White bass run is starting up, you should come up for that
Good stuff, guys! There is one creek around here I fish a lot that has some big redhorses in it. I don't know how many times over the years I've been nymph fishing and hooked into a big one and chased it 200 yards downstream thinking that I had a big brown on. They're stout fish.
Those white bass are tough suckers, too-love catching them. It's getting just about time for them to run here.
To Phallus,
With love
I live maybe 400 yds from the Fisher river, and ive never fished it. The bridge nearby gets hammered, but if i drive through a field and drop down a rhodo choked atv trail, im in some decent private water. So i did just that. Wet wading in early march.

I know some decent fish lurk, but most are gonna be dinks, and no fight for a 7wt.
So today i went back today with a 5wt, some tiny streamers and carp nymphs.

Thats two fish on two nymphs. I caught one more dink on the way out and narrowly missed the thunder/hail storm.
Im thinking another few weeks itll be on fire if the river drops a few cfs and i can wade deep enough to reach the far bank.

WARNING: Phone Photos!
I received the ST. Croix 3 wt, a reel, line and an envelope of **special** discount coupons (photo to be posted soon) from the FRanzian baby raffle thang and was tempted to hit a wild trout stream, but was also enticed by the white bass run that ptfranze was pimpin out. With a sixer of Mama's Little Yella Pils in the cooler, I drove east to texted map coordinates while listening to a couple of chapters of The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt. Pulled into the off road parking right behind Jason, ptf and his wife, bummed a clouser and rigged up. Debated wet wading, 3:1 against, I was part of the majority. We spit up and I followed the "expert" who had caught 35 the day before.... After a slow start we finally found them and the action was nonstop until we quit at dusk. More than 16, less than 20, including 2 or 3 white pearch. Good times! If that was in my backyard, I could do that just about every evening!
First two photo for Doug to ID

There are some in the know who have told me that hybrids find dams to be permeable. I know of one creek near Burlington that has quite a reputation. However, Abbotts creek right below Thom A Lex seems like a no brainer. Hybrids are also being stocked now in Kerr Scott, as well as Stripers
Abbotts Crk is pretty dang small. And briar choked. And fuckin meth choked.
Wooly i have no idea what to offer, i dont even know what kind of reel it is, but i like it.
The whites aren't running here in the mountains yet. Went yesterday, no luck on the whites. About two more weeks, I'd say. Last year, the first weekend of April was on fire.

Yep. I tore a good pair of waders all to hell chasing one down the creek a few years ago. The water was pretty high and stained, and I hooked it on a nymph. Thought I had a huge brown, but after chasing it a hundred yards downstream and getting tangled up in a piece of barbed wire, when I got it to the net it was a two-foot redhorse. He certainly put up a fight, though.
That last one i hooked into screamed my shit! bd;0

Wet socks
Stopped in at the GOPC to pick up some tail, cashier asked if I was going somewhere this weekend. "I go somewhere everyday!" I replied. "Nice," she said with a smile as I walked out the door. Tied up some clousers and thought about the skunk I got on the Staunton the other day. Couldn't let that stand, only question was east or west. Thinking I could clean up on the white bass, I headed east and sent out some messages. Driver showed up with some beerz and we were off in search of some rod benders.

I was lying down for the night, but I kept thinking I was feeling the tug, tug-tug of another shad on the line and it was difficult to settle into a sleep. The muscles had a new memory.
We had just finished up the streamer swap and I had been posing up some white bass pics, when itieuglyflies PMed me about the James River Shad Run. Wanted to know if I would like to go. We looked at mutually agreeable dates and the plan was set in motion.
I went to the local fly shop and picked up some appropriate hooks along with a few odds and ends. When he rung me up after applying the TU discount he declared $25.97! Ho Lee Fuk! I flipped over the pack of TMC 811s and looked at the price sticker, $17.95 for 25 hooks! Ho Lee Fuk! Since I needed that size hook, (I was looking for #6 B10s, but the local fly shops have slim pickings on hooks and tying materials) I took them anyway, but complained to the shopkeep, who was about as surprised as I was over the price.
Tied up a handful of red and pink shad darts and got ready to hit the road.

A twenty minute drive to the industrial exit on the waterfront, over the railroad tracks and past the wastewater treatment facility to the http://www.visitrichmondva.com/things-to-do/local-tours/slavetrail/ (http://Boat Ramp and Slave Trail. Lots of history here that I wasn't aware of as I've only visited Richmond a couple of times before and those were business trips, and I spent most of the time in hotel ballrooms listening to the Maxwell Conference speakers presenting their view of the tobacco industry. I remember standing in line to check-in at the hotel, listening to the people in front of me being told that the hotel was full and despite having reservations they were being sent to another chain for lodging. Since I was with R.J. Reynolds, I was sure that MY reservations would be honored and I briefly entertained the fantasy of offering to share my accommodations with the women who had just been turned away. I stepped up to the counter and announced my name and company affiliation, with the full expectation of promptly receiving my room key, but just like those before me I was sent to the Holiday Inn down the road.
ITUF, had the boat in the water and was standing at the head of the ramp. Looking just like all the other older middle aged fly fishermen with a white beard and ruddy complexion dressed in muted colors and wearing rubber bottomed, leather topped duck boots.
On the water, I toasted the day with a cup of coffee and posted my obligatory Mug Shot to a Facebook group called Mug Shots.

I'd take that any day of the week. Nice job bossman.
Sweet.
I said I was gonna do that this year. b';
I hope Stone Brewing is planning on drilling a well for water. That Richmond City water supply from the James is awful. I lived in Richmond in the 80's and saw that bridge under water a couple times.
Just for the record I do not pay $17.95 for 25 hooks of any kind! I guess that is why Woolly refused to use
any of my flies tied on lesser priced steel. I guess we were lucky for the day, not in the number of fish caught
50 or so since 100 is more like it.....lucky because Woolly rolls in with many stickers on his car with one of them
referring to someone named Bennie or was it Burrney? ( I thought to myself when he parked his car in the lot
it might not be there when we came back in....or at least the the windows would have been broken out). Lucky we
got back to the ramp the car had not been touched and I was relieved. With city fishing you never know.
To sum up the day .....two old grey bearded fly fishermen a little rough around the edges in drab clothes spending a
pretty Spring day on a river....catching some fish and having a good time.

Fail to understand why the DGIF stocked them pesky fuckers in the Falling River which is decent Nokie habitat. Soon, there will be nothing but Spotted bass in that part of the Staunton. The Spots will soon be invading Kerr, Gaston, RR Lake, and eventually the lower Roanoke. Nothing will stop them, not even dams. Then they will loop around and make their way up the Dan, Banister, Hyco.
Good catchin there, Dave.

Good catchin there, Dave.
The spots have absolutely ruined several good smallmouth lakes up here, and are spreading like wildfire. Mostly bass tournament folks stocking them on the downlow.
This year, spotted bass have accounted for exactly 39% of mine and my brother's bass total from the Yadkin River thus far along.
Rain on Tuesday brought the water levels up a small bit. I figured it might make for some good fishing. And it did..

Telephone calls and texts led to chasing rumors. Driving up, it was 35 degrees in the morning with an expected high in the mid-seventies. High UV day even at low altitudes. Water looked good, but the fish weren't to be found. I bailed after lunch, didn't hear back from the others, so I'll assume that nothing else was caught.

Where there are Shad, there are Stripers. You see an Osprey? There was a pair divebombing the water last week I was there.
Saw 1 osprey. Lots of shad. Stayed till dark. None of the fish caught were hooked in the mouth.

Says the guy with the slowest boat otb
Leave my boat out of it, she likes it slow and steady.
thanks for taking me fishing erik, and grayson for the floating boat rental. found an awful lot of plastic baits once she filled w water and flushed out the compartments. ya'lls come north and i'll put you on essox in return.
Quote from: Grannyknot on May 10, 2016, 11:01:11 AM
how fast did the ss grayson move across that lake hauling 2 healthy men with battery power ?
I had to mount it offset on the transom bc of the shape of the front of his boat so it pretty much plowed and wouldnt go straight. Level 5 would scoot pretty good still.
Wrapped a job early with two hours to spare. A 15 minute drive to Wilkes county to hit a smallie flow seemed like a sensible way to squander the time.

Damn. You fished today, too? I knew I should've laid out of work. Good lookin' bass. They give a good dose of bendage.
I felt compelled to add yesterday's warm water endeavor to the correct area.

Gotta love 'em.
Hell yeah! Nice fish and good looking water. I have yet to chase smallmouths this year, even though there's a river full of them that I can literally almost throw a rock into from my yard.

That is a monster, YH. We've got them here, but not many. Mostly smallies and spots.

Hardly Strictly Musky 2016-**I only had a cell phone sorry if the pics aren't up to par
Wednesday morning made the 2 hour drive from Wilmington to Raleigh then 3 hours from Raleigh to Lenoir to meet up with my Dad and head to McMinnville, only 5 more hours in the car.
Started the drive off with a good omen- musky bait in the parking lot at Mcdonalds in Lenoir

Got there about midnight Wednesday night and made plans to go on an exploratory float Chris had wanted to do but never got around to while he lived there. We were putting in at the literal beginning of the river. The river just started in what seemed like an endlessly deep hole with beautiful blue green water. Pretty cool looking.

Tennessee is a pretty place, had never fished out there before. We did hit a lot of shallow water and had to drag the inflatable drift boat alot. At one point even had to lift it over a tree that was blocking the entire river.

Didn't see any musky on this float, but were very surprised to see a TON of trout. And a lot of big trout, had we been trout fishing we would have had a great day. My dad even froze on a huge brown that was chasing his musky fly (it was big enough to eat the musky fly) b'; b';
Got off the water and headed into town for the opening dinner and rules

Some idiots even thought it was a good idea to catch a wolf spider in an aluminum coors light bottle. Don't know where that ended up but sure as hell glad it didn't end up in out cabin.
Next morning, first morning of the tournament, we woke up at about 8, had a visitor at the door, grabbed breakfast and got on the water by 9:30.

Floated that section again got another follow from the same fish. Put him in the 8, saw him open his mouth but he didn't eat the fly and then just like before he sank back to the depths. -0- d:b Wish I had gotten him to eat though b'; Mid 30ish fish
The float goes on- we come up to another deep hole and see this. Alan trying to free a fly they got stuck on the bottom

Overall good first day of the Tournament, I think 5 fish were caught. I was happy moved my first 2 musky and didnt freeze. We saw a ton of smallies on this float, multiple fish that were in the 15-20+ inch range. Next day we decided to do the same float and bring smallie rods this time too.

Took another cocktail break in the deep hole after Alan had a musky eat and lost it. Broke out the chocolate chess gas station pie and cigars as well. Invited a couple guys from Chicago(Mike and Adam) to join us for the fun.

Had a great time meeting great people and got a lot of firsts on this trip

Right on. Hell of a time. I love a smallmouth just as much as anyone, but them musky are badass.....dammit, man. 'c;
not too shabby, despite the company....
Looks like fun man.
So it was you that broke the rum bottle... getting a couple of follows will get you back on the water soon.
Yeah unfortunately it was me. b'; b'; Fucking sucked. We chalked it up as an offering to the musky gods. It would have sucked even worse if we didn't bring the bourbon. They put their faith in me the next day though and thank god I didn't fuck that up.
I am definitely ready to get back on the water for them. Anyone that needs someone on the boat with them I am down.
Awesome report!
It is weird to see people posting my home water as a destination, but cool nonetheless.
Jmiller that is some awesome home water! We were doing the tweaker float the last 2 days.
I can't believe you dishonored that bourbon, by mixing it with coke... crying shame

Great report! Nice skis all around here.
It was nice meeting a few folks from this board at the tourney. Hardly Strictly is one of my favorite weekends every year. I'm already looking forward to next year!
I went striper fishing yesterday. I figured out how to catch the small ones, now time to find the big brothers. First time on the fly for me d:b

Given the size of Jeff's hands I'm guesstimating about 10lbs. Not bad jeffe
Mrs K. put in an order for a resupply of crappie. Called my crappie guide GM who knows a secret lake like the back of his hand. Had not been there in awhile and was pleasantly surprised to see the NCWRC has spent some serious money upgrading the docks and parking lot. Took us awhile but as George says, have enough sunken trees and catch a half dozen off each and before long you'll have all you want to clean. Was on the water about 9 and off a little after noon. Jigs cast on microlight rods did it for us. Saw a lot of boats with spider rigs but did not see a one of them boating a fish.
Couple of my old gear buds getting it done. So many opportunities, so little time!

Some really nice carps. Would love to have carps chasing streamers, that would be a lot of fun.
I could get on board with that!
Headed to the river below the house for a couple hours this afternoon. It's about 300 yards from the end of my driveway, but this is the first time I've fished it this year. Got there too late for the morning bite. Plenty of little smallmouth all about the same size hitting-three or four hits from each hole. But, no bigger ones eating at all. Still a lot of fun on a 4-weight and a good way to spend part of an afternoon.

Rarely, but they do sometimes
Saw a few big ones today, but no bueno
I've got 3 local places that hold huge grassies. If you're interested let me know. I'm game.
My son, wife, and myself have all shared some sickness for a few weeks now. I think it may finally be gone. Good riddance. My trout fishing has been minimal largely due to feeling like shit, and also due to my not being overly-enthused about anything on my agenda. The last several brookie adventures were excellent in many ways making most other options pale in comparison. I've taken refuge by pond-hopping a little lately to squeeze some fishing into an ever-increasing work schedule. I'm hoping to tangle with a carp again. Some of these ponds sport plenty of 1-2 lb. panfish up to 13" or so. I'll take it.

Things were all chill early on, then at 9.30, the wind machine fired up. Tailwind when higher gradient was already giving us a boost. Headwinds in the flattish Walleye / Musky water. Fish were caught, nice ones were lost. I was dismayed at how rough the wading was here. This is the most ragged effing section of river I've ever had the privilege to wade....yes worse than the Haw below Rt. 64. I didn't wade but a few minutes being the wading boots were at the house. Fish seemed to start biting around three, or about the time we arrived at the take out.
Fun section for sure. Lots of grass carp in that area too
Awesome river. And a good day with the boy, priceless. 'c;

Ummmm.....
This afternoon left me with a few hours to get out. I had a few trout streams on my radar, but with the limited timeframe I need to stay somewhat local. Smallmouth will do. I checked on 4 flows. 3 were muddier than I like so that made my choice fairly simple. Judging from the way the outing began, I thought this was going to be off the charts. I had a nice sized smallmouth chase my fly upstream like a rocket and just clobber it. Sadly, it came unglued before I could bring it to hand. I also almost stepped on a 15" class bass. Nothing much to brag about here as far as size goes. I did take a couple swims when I entered water well over my head. Felt ok in this hot weather. The full moon had me wondering if the fish would bite at all. Some did. At one point a nice'un slammed something downstream of me on the surface. Was a grown one fo' sho'.

It's great you had the opportunity to visit Iceland, but I do not understand its draw. Bleak and depressing. Coulter's Hell really bothered me. Volcanoes combined with the odor of sulfur get my hackles going.
I wanna get my hands on a sail boat and spend a Summer sailing around Cuba, Virgin Islands, and the Bahamas.
Oh by the way, tomorrow's float is for autistic people and their families, lol.
I'm not interested in tropical places very much, unless its tarpon and bikinis. I don't care for hot weather much. I'll post a report when I get back to show you why i chose Iceland.
Btw sounds like a good float. For a good reason.

Another stretch of this flow is calling my name. A stretch that's a stranger to me. Sunday or sooner.....we'll be acquainted.
Hit the river below the house for about 45 minutes yesterday afternoon before a big zag of lightning struck the hill right above me, and I left a wake across the river like a Ranger bass boat. ;D

Slime on, dude.
BTW, have traveled to Cleveland and back and Fairmont, WV and back in the last five days.
The cicada hatch in NW WV and Eastern Ohio was heavy. And the ash trees are dying in droves from the borer.
I need to go fishing. b';

I just saw a cicada flying while carrying a dead cicada. The dead cicada was bigger than the cicada killer.
A long-time friend of mine mentioned fishing a small lake again from his little boat. I was in. Nothing but a few small bass and bluegill. I did see a carp....no luck.

Saturday morning I was on baby duty as the wife attended an event. I decided instead of sitting around instead I'd take Sailor out for some hiking and fishing before it got too unbearably hot. Did more hiking than fishing. Caught a few creek chub, and didn't even see a trout. It's a funny stream and sure they were sulking.

Sunday I hit up the local river. It's been blown out most of summer and haven't been able to fish it. Carp was the primary target but like all my carp trips, it became a smallie trip. Saw one carp as I about stepped on him as I was wading thru some weeds. Smallies were all fun size and about a dozen were harassed in the hour I fished.

Hike out I got stuck behind some goobers who went down to swim barefoot. They would not move over on the trail so it was a long hike behind them listening to them groan about stepping on rocks.
Nice job, J.
Good stuff!
@Big J -- I must ask. Is the place on her forehead from walking into a table or something? My son looks like he's been beaten from head to toe. He's always got several places on his face and forehead along with many scrapes and bruises on his arms and legs. He's ruthless.
Dee Vo. It's called an angel kiss birthmark. She's had it since birth and Doctor said it'll eventually fade and disappear. Something to do with a hematoma or something. 15 months old and still hasn't faded.
Cool. I figured it was a birthmark if not a bump on the head incident. My son has what is known as a "stork-bite" birthmark right inside his hair-line on the back of his head. Neat stuff.

After receiving a text from my brother yesterday morning I instantly changed my plans of exploring the upper reaches of river. I'll take care of that soon enough.
Low water offers many possibilities in certain rivers. Especially this one, if you know where to go. Matt ended up with a spot and I landed 3 smallmouth including one that really put up a tussle. I'll be visiting my backyard flow until flows render it unmanageable. Low levels rock in this respect. Any of you boys wanna join me, just holla.
I still want to hookup with a carp or koi in this flow. They're there.

The pic where Matt is fighting the fish is about the deepest water we encountered. Most of the rest was much shallower.
I become buoyant at that depth. :o
Good shit! I don't wade that deep either.

My father-in-law came down from Michigan and wanted to hire a guide for smallies on the New. We ended up with a recommendation of a recommendation of a recommendation (Jeff Payne) from you degenerates here. We ended up on spinning gear, as that's where the FIL was most comfortable. This ended up being an awesome day.
We put in for about a 6 hour float and crushed them on topwater, jerk bait, plastics, everything. At least 40 or 50 between the two of us. Perfect weather, great views, and a good time hanging out with my wife's dad.

It was really foggy when I started fishing. As I was standing on a rock tying on a fly, I heard a "whoosh" overhead and looked up to see a fully mature bald eagle about three feet over my head. Startled the crap out of me, and him too when I jumped and whipped my rod around. By the time I got my camera up, I only got this shot of his ass as he is hauling the aforementioned ass rapidly back downriver.

And then as we were both tying on something different something smashed the bottom of the boat, on the left side, just about in the middle - literally rocking it.
It jumped again about 5 ft behind the boat, and then kept rolling/half-jumping out of the water.
It was a big grass carp - 20+lbs
We assume it stunned itself when it bumped the boat and took the next 30 seconds to get its bearings. Weirdest thing.
All-in-all, it was a great afternoon.

After spending two days in E. TN, (I had contemplated making it three) I worked Sunday, getting caught up when I checked the BRFFF and saw another "Empty Seat" notice for Monday.
Up at 5:00 for the two hour drive to Radford VA and a musky float on the New.

Always a good time floating with Drifters. He has fed me the "take out is around the corner" line before. I think it was another mile before we hit the take out.

Sent a text to da spork on Friday asking if he wanted to chase after some smallies on the Yadkin. It's about as low and clears as it ever gets. He was in Atlanta, getting some award for selling tons of French fries hamburger buns. I left late and made a wrong turn before finally getting to the river.
Access is a mile down the trail, figured I didn't have time to do that, so I drove on down to the boat access to scout that location.

LoginBriefly entertained the idea of fishing here, but went for a hike down the trail instead. Found out that the trial ends at the top of the islands and decent looking smallie habitat. Hiked back and spotted a kayakers with fishing gear on the far side of the river. I decided to stop at the 67 takeout on the way back to Winston.

I paid my payroll taxes, don't ask, too damn much, so I took the afternoon off and drove up to the river, it was too muddy to bother with, so I went to plan "B" and fished for smallies for a couple of hours. Nothing going on there. Threw a wiggle minnow on a full sinking line. Nada, well a sunfish no bigger than the fly hit it three times and managed to hook itself, I drank a beer and headed home....

Wow can't believe how low/clear it is there. There are some smallies there but going way up away from the road is key. I have seen some sights there in the summer :o

When I started this year my goal was to fish over 100 days... Things were going darn well for the first six months, but then life started to get in the way and I've been struggling to catch up with only six week left I may not reach my goal. The damn dam on my local is still so screwed up that they are now projecting that the project will not be finished until April. I had counted on this river as my go to stream. So I drove on up the other day, and damn if they didn't publish they release schedule but for the first time in quite a while the release wasn't even predictable based on the earlier releases in the week. It was already late in the day, and now there was no hope to fish as the water continued to flow. But it wasn't all bad I did find a puck of flies, two streamers and a bobber thing. So I made some calls and made plans to fish the next day, starting out on a marginal warm water river and then planned to catch falling water up on the trout stream.

I worked in the morning and finished up by 12:30 and drove an hour north and parked at the end of the road under an overpass. Rigging up I caught a good whiff of DSFK and looked around.

Sunday's rain made me even more stir crazy. I had to get out and fish somewhere. A nearby pond had to suffice.
