Jacob wanted to hit this stream. Bad. I had never fished it, either.
Intel is non existent. Maps don't agree. Where does private land end and public start? Boy, some of those topo lines are close together. We drove separately and arrived early at a popular trail head on Sunday. But we were not going down the popular trails. Hopefully the turkey hunters obeyed the law and stayed home. It was stupid foggy on the drive up. And it stayed super foggy on the hike in. I'll let J handle the stats. Lets just say we put in the miles and elevation. Part of our hike in was on an old road. Every headwater trib was pumping. Well, we did get another 1/2" of rain overnight.

A huge patch of ladyslippers about a week from flowering.

J had a track on his GPS and after bushwhacking down an easy ridgeline,and then a stupid hard trib, we popped out right where we had planned. We started right above the private property at the first big waterfall of the day. But there were posted signs. Hummm. I hiked up a ways while J fished. I had clipped off the end of my damaged fly line after the last trip and forgot to fix it at home.  b';
No leader in the pack. The largest tippet I had was 2x. Cracked a beer and went to work. A 2x nail knot to make a loop, a doubled 2x butt section and build off of that. It worked.

We were dumbfounded by the stream. The amount of water. The waterfalls. What branch were we on? When would we run out of fish as we climbed? Lots of wtf? But the chunky fish kept coming.

10" of goodness came out of there.
J took another 8-9" fish from the far side after I was done.

Fog burned off about 1:30. At some point we had to head up and out. We had no idea where we would pop out on the trial. We weren't sure which branch we were on. It was that confusing back there. But we knew the trail out was up there. Somewhere.

I was cramping up last night sorting through the pics. Got up twice last night with a hammy cramped up. Good to go, though. No regrets.

 :cheers

Back story on this stream.  It sucks to access.  I tried accessing it once two years ago and ended up getting turned around on the trail network (which is completely unlisted online, on maps, no signage, unknown who maintains it, etc) and ended up on a completely different trout stream.  It is that bad back there.  Or I'm that stupid.  That trip was the reason I forked down some money on the GPS watch I have now.  Vowed to get back there one day.  Getting into the stream you have to hike 3 miles and then bushwhack down a feeder to get to the main branch. You fish up and then pick your feeder trib to hike back up to the trail at the top.  1,600+ feet of elevation loss on hike down.  Over 1,000 ft of that loss is in half a mile.

Also have had two back to back nights of dreaming I'm being attacked by a bear and on drive up saw an owl sitting in the road.  Bad omens? Guess we'll find out. Started out morning right though.

But when we got the stream we were surprised by the amount of water.

There were some sulphurs, caddis, and a few stoneflies popping off but way too much water from last nights rain to fish dries.

Fishing picked up as the day went on.  Didn't catch a skinny fish all day. All had been eating well.

Then the stream started going up...

Pano shot of a good series of falls.

I was concerned that the trout would stop at each big falls but was surprised to find them above each one.

Aye Gawd. Git some. I'm too old for that, but want to sooo bad.  :o  That's where the big specks are if you can get to 'em.
Absolutely fine. Damn good stuff there, both of you!  :bow  'c;  'c;

Wow, now that was an adventure and great reports. Glad to know such places still exist. The fog shots were outstanding as were the size of the brookies.

Onslow

Awesome work!  My kind of adventure right there.

Nice work!  Looks like a tough trip but well worth the effort.

Fog probably kept the turkeys quiet all morning!

Ticks are looking bad this year.  Had one crawling on me Sunday on the hike out and checked myself real good Sunday night when I got home.  This morning sitting on the couch I felt a tingle on my nipple.  Had a darn deer tick in my nipple.

do you treat your clothes with permethrin? I started treating pants last year when wet wading on the Smith and walking in on that field....

Did you notice it helped?

the only evidence that it is working is not seeing them -- only used treated pants on 4 occasions, may treat them again if I continue going RC or if the Smith opens up again... I heard that more rain is on the way...

Helluva adventure guys  !!!!!   'c;   Great photos  !! And some damn nice trout.  That creek must be very fertile because those trout look well fed. Those climbs out make my knees and back hurt just looking at them.  Thanks for passing this stuff on to old "has beens" like me who used to do those kind of creeks 20 years ago
