Title: looking for a few good men and women
Post by: Al on November 22, 2010, 21:16:18 PM
For those of us who volunteer at the NCWRC John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center, located at the site of the old Lake Rim Hatchery in Fayetteville, the cooling temperatures mean trout are about to arrive and fly fishing clinics are right on the horizon.

The trout are  scheduled to arrive on December 9th, 2010 @ 2pm.
We have scheduled three beginner clinics, one advanced clinic and the Boy Scout Merit Badge events again this year. Dates have already been locked in. All dates are on a Saturday with a start time of 9:00am and end time of 3:30pm.  This year we are also holding a casting clinic for our volunteers. The schedule looks like this:

December 18, 2010 (9:00 am - 12 noon) - Volunteer workshop and casting class: We have invited Jeff Leary, Director of the Fly Fishing Program at Duke University and one of his associates, Jim Cole, both of whom are excellent fly fishermen, to share some of their casting techniques. We will also use this workshop to go over teaching tips, lessons learned, expectations and administrative requirements as we prepare to kick off the 2011 season.  The trout will in the ponds and are available to volunteers who participate in the morning workshop until 3:00 pm to hone your casting, hooking, playing, landing and release skills.

January 8, 2011 (9:00 am - 3:30 pm) -  Intro to Fly Fishing Clinic

January 22, 2011 (9:00 am - 3:30 pm) -  Intro to Fly Fishing Clinic

February 12, 2011 (9:00 am - 3:30 pm) -  Intro to Fly Fishing Clinic

February 26, 2011 (9:00 am - 3:30 pm) - Advanced Fly Fishing Clinic

March 12, 2011 (9:00 am - 3:30 pm) - Boy Scout Fly Fishing Clinic

March 26, 2011 (9:00 am - 3:30 pm) - Boy Scout Fly Fishing Clinic

TBA June / July 2011 (9:00 am - 3:30 pm) - Warm Water Fly Fishing Clinic

2nd Wednesday of each month (1:00 pm - 5:00 pm) - Wounded Warrior / Military Appreciation Fishing

This will be the 9th year hosting fly fishing clinics at the Pechmann Center.  NCWRC provides the venue and volunteers provide the instruction. We have said many times before that without the generous donation of time and expertise by our volunteers these clinics would not be possible. This is still a true statement. We require a minimum of twelve volunteers at each clinic for things to run smoothly. Some of our volunteers are able to make every event while others can only participate occasionally - this is fine. We do ask that you commit to at least 50% of our regular clinics.

We have a dedicated cadre of volunteers, most of whom have already committed to return for the next round of clinics. We are also constantly looking for a few good men and women with fly fishing skills who might be interested in joining our volunteer group. You don't need to be an expert. All we ask is for a commitment and an earnest effort. We always have our new volunteers monitor the first clinic so they get a feel for what we are trying to accomplish. This also give us an opportunity to review your skills so you can be placed where you will do the most good. If you are interested in joining our group please contact me at 910-868-6235 or email aakitt@earthlink.net  (Don't just show up - we fall under NCWRC volunteer criteria and guidelines - paperwork to fill out)

Hoping to make as many as possible.

If you haven't volunteered before - give it a go.  You'll meet some great folks, and help some newbies catch their first trout on a fly.

It'll feel good.  You'll be happy you helped out.

I know for a fact that I cannot teach people how to cast. b';

You'll be amazed how much you will learn about casting by teaching someone to cast....

Brian - I am going to respond in open forum instead of PM

Love to have you join us - You do not need to be an expert caster. We have the need for folks with different skills. If you have already attended our warm water clinic you have a good idea of what we are trying to accomplish which expose folks to the pleasures of fly fishing. Enroll your wife in our basic clinic and come with her - be sure you re-introduce yourself. After we talk i will give the paperwork - (government you know)
