Title: Driftless Area - MN
Post by: Dougfish on June 17, 2014, 07:15:15 AM
I've been going to MN twice a year for business. I dreamily look at the upper Mississippi, gobs of lakes and such as I fly/drive about. I also obsess over the Driftless area of SE MN and other states. This year I go three times. The first time is in mid-August. And I'm setting aside some time to fish.

Anyone have any experiences there? I'm confining myself to MN so I won't hop around too much. I've researched fly shops, blogs, maps etc. Anyone have someone favorite they would suggest I follow? I'm not hiring a guide. I can find the fish. I just don't want to waste much time on sketchy access or overcrowded water (although MN DNR has secured very good  access it seems). Hoteling it, not camping. And I'll have my car.

Yeah, I fish too much.

Was up around 50 lakes and Itasca last summer for about a week for a wedding.

Did not bring a rod and all that beautiful water was about to drive me mad.

Fourtunatally I remained well sedated the entire trip.

Shifted the target to the Viroqua area, SE of LaCrosse, WI.
A little better intel available and it puts me closer to home when I decide to bug out.

Heading out next Saturday afternoon. Working my way out and seeing dealers and greenhouse growers through Cincinnati, Indy, Iowa City, Des Moines, Omaha, to Sioux Fall, SD.
Work a distributor's show there and head to MN for another show and visiting dealers/growers.
Will hit the water all day on Friday the 15th and a half day on the 16th before heading home.
A buddy who lives outside Chicago is supposed to meet me there. But I'm not holding my breath.

Hope I have a good trip report for you!  -+;

You better come back with the goods, Doug!

Stopped for gas in La Crosse one time...only thing I remember is the wind.

My friends in Minneapolis usually go to Wisconsin to trout fish.  Let me see if I can get you some information from them
