IAEA team in Japan to help prepare Fukushima water release

>>>An International Atomic Energy Agency mission arrived in Japan on Monday to help prepare for a decades-long release into the ocean of treated but still radioactive water from the wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant, officials said.

The three-member team will meet with officials in Tokyo and travel to the Fukushima Daiichi plant to discuss technical details with experts until Friday, IAEA and Japanese officials said.

The team, headed by Lydie Evrard, head of the IAEA's Department of Nuclear Safety and Security, is gathering information to prepare a review of the discharge plans.

>>>The idea has been fiercely opposed by fishermen, residents and Japan's neighbors, including China and South Korea.

The Western New York Land Conservancy and the Friends of the Allegany Wildlands are announcing a $310,000 matching gift to save the Allegany Wildlands, a stunning 200-acre forest located only a few hundred feet from the Allegheny Reservoir near Allegany State Park. They need members of the community to donate to match the gift by the end of this year. Every dollar donated will be matched, dollar for dollar. The total fundraising goal to save the Allegany Wildlands is $879,000, and they have to secure that funding by the end of this year. Once that goal is met, the Land Conservancy will purchase the land and keep it open as a publicly accessible nature preserve forever.

Went to visit my old high school football coach yesterday with a couple of pals.  This very topic of invasive species was discussed, and the question arose if we (North America) have introduced invasives to the rest of the world.

We are not without blame!

But... but... it's so much more satisfying to blame China.

I like the Smithsonian tv channel. Great trade off, we give them potoato bugs, they give us a virus that kills millions. With the amout of imports from around the world they need to sustain their population they are at great risk http://www.china.org.cn/environment/features_analyses/2009-06/03/content_17880215.htm. I remember before the Nixon presidency we had no relations with China. Look at them in a historical context as well as their behavior today. They imprison and kill their citizens by the millions. The is no internet as we know it in China, they have no free speech. They locked citizens down from Covid and wouldn't let them leave their homes, even for food. They let them starve inside their homes. They are aggressive and don't play by our rules, they intend to rule the world. I can not understand why anyone would defend them?

I don't believe anyone was defending China.

It ain't a contest, at least I don't think it is.  Interesting discussion though.

I'm not sure of all the nasties we've given the rest of the world.  I know we did not start fast food (I think the Romans and the Greeks did) but I bet the U.S. was instrumental in poisoning the industry with crappy food and introducing the cuisine to the global masses.  Don't misconstrue, I love White Castle and McDonalds.  So, just off the top of my head, without investigating further, I say with fast food obesity, associated heart disease, and ailments like syphilis (still debatable), it might be close to even-steven.  Then if you consider all the nonlethal, but mind deadening, stuff we've bestowed on the world, like Vanilla Ices' "Ice Ice Baby" and Paul Anka's  "(You're) Having My Baby", then we may be the clear winner in the fantasy contest.
