Title: Deja Vu All Over Again
Post by: Aka on January 24, 2022, 11:50:11 AM
Cabin fever, winter doldrums, 2020 2.0.

One or perhaps all of the above are contributing to this contribution. I think I planned to post something last fall. If I did, I didn't.

Anyway, last year I had planned to go to England for my mom's 80th birthday but the Covid shit made it look impossible so early last year Ben & I talked about making a trip to Alaska at the end of August. Spring came and so did emergency use authorizations & in a vax fueled high I thought I'd be able to travel to England for mom's 80th so the Alaska plan was scuttled. Then new variants & surges came and with them travel restrictions. All the shit happened. So I text Ben and the AK trip was resurrected.

The plan was pretty simple, fish. Some logistics out the way (which days to fish where & what Airbnb to stay in) and things were pretty well lined up. Then I looked at rental cars and about shit myself. It was going to be over $3k for a 9 or 10 day rental. Luckily my sister still had her 2002 VW Golf in town and agreed to let us use it in exchange for having some minor maintenance done on it before we left Anchorage.

Itinerary: Anchorage (get the car and last minute stuff eg. bear spray) - Seward (deep sea fishing) - Kenai (drift boat fishing but not a drift boat bc it had a motor) - Homer (base camp for the rest of the trip) - Anchorage.

No, but we did fish the Russian one day while we were there. It was a big return year for Sockeye on the Kenai and the Russian was chock full of them.

Such a great trip that came together quite quickly.  Fuck though, it is a long ass flight from EWR to ANC.

Yep, lingcod, long way to drag it up from 300' deep.
