I checked the weather but didn't pay attention to the wind. The flag at the mirror plant was blowing straight down stream. I didn't even think about spey casting and went with a nymph rig; stone with a rs2 dropper. There was a Tahoe with a VA Wildlife Conservation tag; TR BUM in the lot, I didn't see him on the water as went low, stopping at the left handed run, it was there that I decided that it was going to be a bitch of a day as mending the line was difficult to impossible as the wind counteracted against all efforts.

I picked off three punes there, one on the stone and the others took the rs2.

I moved on down to the trestle and caught nothing. I was getting tired of fighting the wind and watching a bobber. I did see one trout rise to what I thought was a BWO.

After a couple of hours of abuse I gave up and headed out stopping at sally's where I caught a handful of punes and one better fish from under the rhododendrons.

The Tahoe was gone by the time I got back to the lot at 3:30

Here is how chatbot wrote the TR

Ah, fly fishing for small brown trout on a windy winter day? That's enough to get any angler's heart a-flutter. It's a dreary grey scene - the sky is a deep slate color, and the cold wind gusts off the lake. For me, though, that just means more of an adventure, and I'm more than ready to take it on.

As I walk along the pebble and gravel shoreline, I can see the brown trout jumping in the murky-looking water, practically begging me to catch them. This isn't your usual day of boiling-hot sunshine and clear visibility, but that doesn't bother me. There'll be plenty of those days when winter passes, but those cold winter days, the such-as-this, come just once a year.

Casting my fly at the trout definitely takes a bit more finesse and accuracy on account of the wind.

It may have been sunny in the parking lot but I was standing in the shadow of the bluff as the noon sun was too low in the sky to provide any warmth. I managed to catch one pune brown in that run and then headed on down to find Doug and have a beer and lunch.

WE noticed a few BWO and Caddis in the air, no trout rising, it looked desolate. After solving none of the world's problems we headed back to fish the run and caught nothing.  We decided to move on up and hit a few spots on the way out. Doug swung some soft hackles below turtle creek while I watched.

He caught nothing and headed home and I stopped in at Sally's and caught a couple. A red raft was headed down and they hit the spots above me but were kind enough to row behind me.

I headed on down to the devil bridge and rigged up the spey pole and swung up a brown on an intruder.

I hit the river walk run as the sun was setting and caught a stockbow and that was that.

A couple of pretty days on the river this week.
That translated to weak fishing.  b';
Very few bugs.
Very few willing fish.
Very few trains.
The highlight was getting buzzed by Ospreys.

The other highlight was seeing the bossman.
It had been months.

As he said, we solved zero problems of the world.
And agreed that the fishing sukked.

#23-9 52 degrees blue bird skies.

I had a choice of spey, euro, or conventional fly rods to choose from. I decided to swing flies today and hit the same water as yesterday.

Doug and i discussed the piles of leaves that are left on the bank. My theory is that this is created by beavers, but I don't know why.
Any of you beaver biologist know what's going on here?

I even tried a spot in town, no luck there either, but I did get a couple of bumps...

I should mention that I saw some NC vehicles, one with a brand-new trailer at river walk -- I think they were floating  smithfly raft that I saw just above River Road. There was another trailer parked there.

When Woolly's TR lacks a picture of a beer and a trout instead featured a pic of a muddy ditch and  two piles of wet leaves....fishing must be really bad!

driver

I believe it is otters that make the piles of leaves. They dig the leaves up in search of food. Much easier to sort out on the bank that under water.

Snap T casting is getting better all the time.... placing the intruder right up against the far bank... unfortunately there were no takers...

just casting away from river right all afternoon, it's a low percentage game and I almost switched to a euro rig, but I was in a double spey casting groove.

Was supposed to be mostly overcast.
Ended up about half and half.
The low sun was in my eyes most of the day.
But the days are increasing in length. About 2 min/day!
Started at 32, finished at 50 degrees.

Worked a reach I rarely fish.
A day of swinging new soft hackles.

Spent about 2 1/2 hours in knee to ballz deep water before I got out for a break.
Nice to know I can go that long without pissing! Little milestones, friends.
Finished at 8 fish. Saw a handful of risers. No bugs flying.
Chucked a puff daddy at one. No bueno.

Home at a decent hour.
Firepit.

Now today was an overcast day!
Started warm, too.
Very few bugs flying. Again.
I turned over a bunch of rocks today and saw no mayfly larvae.
Concerning. I'll check a few other areas.

I switched to a small streamer and came up empty after 45 minutes.
Neil texted me saying I should be throwing streamers.
Switched to my big ass girdlebug under an indicator.
Still came up empty.

Moved up to the next good run.
Still denied after some damn nice fishing (if I do say so).

Moved up to where Keith saw me finish up last week and went small again.
