Maybe this deserves to be a thread....?

Fishbug was jonzing to float for something. Trout or muskie?
Fish of a thousand casts was chosen.
7.3 mile float. Sketchy put-in ramp. Cold.
Confidence semi-high.

He started rowing, I started chuckin.
We went back and forth, taking turns throwing our arms off.
He had a flash/follow to keep our hopes up.

We had to row over to the sunny side of the river to warm up on occasion,
so not sure if we hit all the best spots.
Carry on.

We had passed the halfway point with nothing.
But hey, we weren't gonna be on the river all day.
Carry on.

John had a missed take in sight of the take out.  b';
And that was the highlight.
Took out. (His Stealthcraft drifter is an easy in and out boat.)
Ran the reverse shuttle and headed home.

Found the cheapest gas of 2022.

I'll catch one of those toothy bastards eventually.  n!n

Last fish shoulda been nailed. ?Hook too dull? Probably hook thrower too dull.

Some lessons from Blane (whos familiar Adipose boat I saw parked at the Gala campground...) "the eat" part is interesting.

Just keep stripping.

Y'all covering too much water. Slow it down. That beat gets hammered anyway.

Shoot, you had a follow and an eat.  That's a successful musky day equal to a 100 caught trout day.

I'm of the mindset that the more water you cover, the better your odds are of finding a fish that will eat.  Once you get a follow from a fish though, stick with that hole for a little bit and see if you can get him to come back up.

Fishbug

A little sarcasm in my comment...

Agree—-twas a good day in musky terms.

Still unsure what to do after a miss/hit. Same fly, change flies, go bigger, go smaller, etc?

When you joining?!

No rhyme or reason with musky.  Do all of the above or none of the above, may make all the difference or none at all.  Musky are just weird like that.

Hopefully I'll get out more in 2023.  Life in 2022 has sucked hard.  Plan on floating with Doug this Monday  d:b

Continued.....

Jacob, Bobby and I got out on the river yesterday.
My pigboat this time.
Similar results. Float and cast for 7 miles.
The only fish seen was in the last 0.3 mile.  b';

A follow, a blown figure 8? No bite.
Twas a lovely 65 degree Jan day.
Oyster Rockefeller Soup on the bote, ftw.

Need to catch one in 2023.

streamereater_101691

There y'all go again. 7 miles. Put in at glen Wilton. Anchor the boat. Change flies in every hole after 50 casts(yes, 50 casts in 1 hole). When in doubt fish black.
That blue skiff catches the hell out of them because he knows the type of water to fish right now. Slow, smooth, and deep. There's always a fish on that left bank before the take out, but they get a really good look at it. Keep grinding.

Dougfish

Thanks, champ.
Can you post up a report showing us your successes?
Seriously?
We could use some good content here.

Btw, the guided bote that took out ahead of us only got one small one.
And they motored up and back.
And cut us off one time.

ex - I'm not going to live with you through one more fishing season!
me -There's a season?

Pastor explains icons to my son: you know like the fish symbol on the back of cars.
My son: My dad has two fish on his car and they're both trout!

Fishbug

Spot hopping makes sense w/ a jet boat.

Rowing down river is a inefficient way to target and catch Musky.

Half the funs floating down the river. The other half is sight seeing, casting stupidly large flies etc. Seeing/catching a Musky is just icing on the cake.

trout-r-us

Looks like fun. A real challenge. A break from the same ol' same ol'. I've not fished for them, but can imagine the level of excitement when you do finally hook up.
Looking forward to future trip reports.
