It was a buggy, not so fishy sort of day. Diversity  abounds, but I'm no entomologist by any stretch of the imagination. Got some great samples. Many thanks to Woolly and Al for the assistance. I have class now, so I'll toss some pics up later.

Greatest revelation?
Recently stocked rainbow trout eat didymo, tree bark, moss, rocks and leaf litter. I believe the phenomena is called search image, and they don't have it quite right, yet.

Glad to see the Smith patrons revisit and embrace the beautiful application of using bait.  I also have rediscovered the wonder and gratification of using something other than flies.

Drove on up to puneville to help TF do some kick sampling of the river. Al was there too.

Asellidae = sow bug, cress bug - very cool and most excellent food item if in great numbers

Isoptera = termite w/ equal length wings

Plus you got mayflies in vial of stoneflies and other FUs but I give you all an A- B- for effort and fortitude.  The only reason I give you a minus is the high tech bullshit thermometer I think I see in TF's hand.

Good job guys; now do any of you have hints on digging worms and catching crickets?

Had to change your grade after seeing the stomach pump.  Your group project grade would have been a solid A- IF you had kept the damned tiny browns (as recommended by biologists), gutted them, opened their stomachs, and recorded your findings.

Eleagnus, invasive shrub.  n!n

Little white flower was our native Foamflower, Tiarella.

I spy a mayfly in the caddis tube, also.

Yes the sample vials were all mixed by location. I sort them later when they go in isopropyl alcohol.

We got an eclectic mix of Plecoptera, Ephemeroptera, and Tricoptera. There were other sow bugs too. Unfamiliar with taxa on them though. Not going to deep here, just order-family level.
We got quite a few annelids too. I'm surprised they can tolerate that water.
No crawdads.
Also, this time there was no Megaloptera. I found one on a previous trip. Driver gets credit for the ID.

Midges were in the air, but we found very few in the seine.

I was also pretty sure the mystery "spinner" was Isoptera. They seem to be fairly abundant this time of year.

Yes my thermometer is IR, I also have a conventional one Mud. I was being lazy.

As for culling from the herd, that's coming. I dissected a few rainbows in the sink last night. I have to look at competition a bit. I'd say a diet of didymo, bark, rocks, leaf detritus and moss isn't much competition. Just checking a block. Most of my references on that matter say hatchery over wild is marginal competition at best.

One thing of interest was a beaut of a stonefly that Keith found. About 40mm long, a dark chocolate colored dorsal region with a nice golden belly and dark segmentation.

I'm still messing with pics and sorting bugs.

Here are a few of the better photos I took on our "bugging expedition"

There are really only 2-3 genera of importance in the family of aquatic sow bugs, and they pretty much all look alike and serve the same ecological role – so don't sweat the genera.

If they are there in great numbers, or are increasing in numbers, then every Smith River angler should get a permanent erection.   Honestly, I don't remember ever seeing a sow bug in the Smith, but I recently forgot my anniversary and likely will forget my wife's birthday, so cut me some slack on remembering shit.  Purging the mind of worthless information has been awe-inspiring, but I've screwed the pooch multiple times on what info to purge.

Back to your boner -inducing critter.  Sow bugs, along with Amphipods, were the life's blood of the SOHO years ago before the labyrinth dam – so abundant in the Fontinalis moss that we had a plan to transplant the moss with all the crustaceans, in aerated coolers of water, up to the Smith.  Multiple state and federal laws would be broken.  Bottom line is we did not have enough hair on our peaches to follow through.

I hope they have exploded, or will explode, in the Smith.  You guys will be very happy.

You will find scuds in my fly box. Been using them for years. Weighted, unweighted, different sizes.
But hey, they crush it on bluelines, too. Overlooked tie.

But, they are pink and orange and god-knows-what colors, and there's never been a pink or orange scud until you put it into the preservative.  And the web photos, I bet my left nut, of the colored ones, are of preserved specimens.

Plus I bet most of yours has a fucking bead for a head – very natural – NOT!!!

You're fishing a glorified mini egg fly so deal with it.

Don't pull a Big J or a Cowboy on us and try to justify something like a green weenie as being natural.  AND learn to reel with the correct hand!!

I still love you man!!

Yes, you see green.  The caddis is even called the green rock worm, BUT it ain't this green!!!  Don't attempt to bullshit a bullshitter.  I've meticulously thrashed through the match the critter, match the hatch puzzle, to the point of making enemies, losing friends, and alienating family.  Now, I am proud to say that my only interest in macroinvertebrates is their utility in disclosing the quality of waters  -- tell me a story and nothing more.

I'm just jabbing you gents.  Cold as hell here, area like being in a wind tunnel, and tomorrow is turkey day.  Found my camo shirt and jeans, working on my calls, and hoping for a sunny, windless Saturday morning.

Peace, peckerwoods!!

Wind blown and cold here, but not Mountain Grove cold. Peace, out. Gotta tie some more "inchworms" and scuds.
