Had one near here attack a guy in a hammock on Hazel Creek awhile back. They usually have to close a bunch of backcountry campsites every year in the Smokies because of aggressive bears.

This is getting close to home. I learned to swim at Douthat State Park - very familiar with the area. I might need that .357 after all.
There are many bear in Bath County. Everyone is seeing them. Combine the bear, coyotes, copperheads, and rattlesnakes and you have the perfect storm. I would not suggest visiting and attempting to fish.

Is that voice even real? Overdub for comic relief? Maybe if she would just stfu the bear would have left.
She should have unloaded the rest of the pepper spray too
"Bear, why are you breaking my kayak?" said the squeaky voiced puta.
"Because you sprayed that hot shit in my face you dumb bitch." replied the bear.
I saw that on fuckbook yesterday. Sounds like a whiny ass entitled subaru driving bitch from Washington. There's a reason that bear ate that douche canoe. She woulda fukkin drowned anyway. Funny how some fukkos perpetuate and even breed unbeknownst to them all the while, that a guardian angel offers them a tomorrow in the form of gratuities which are in turn seen as vices by nimmus roddis extraordinanus. <Maley was reportedly attempting a solo trip between Ketchikan and Petersburg when she stopped at the U.S. Forest Service cabin in Berg Bay, she wrote. The cabin is located 22 miles southeast of Wrangell, according to the Forest Service's website.
"I had just carried my tent, food, and all my gear into the cabin to dry while I went on a 4 mile hike that begins just behind the cabin. I heard something outside as I ate my lunch, and well, I never got to go on that hike," Maley wrote.
After the bear left, Maley said she dragged her kayak closer to the cabin and swam to a nearby boat for help. She ended up in Wrangell, she wrote, where she began repairing her damaged kayak.> CBS News

Damned right.
It is rather challenging to forget a news story such as this.
QuoteA black bear attacked and killed a logger in his trailer, then returned several times to eat the body, authorities said. State wildlife officials said it is rare for a black bear to kill a human, but bears have been known to eat the remains of people who died in the wilderness. But evidence in Cotopaxi, about 100 miles southwest of Denver, indicated the bear killed Colin McClelland, 24, of Buena Vista. "It is really unusual, but more unusual is the attack. . . . It appeared the initial attack took place inside that trailer," said Fremont County sheriff's Lt. Dale Rea.

If we, smelly humans, are in the woods, then it is provoked.
My former employer once had a hunting lease on a parcel of peanut farm land/swamp near Plymouth NC. His wife once took to the tree stand, and after a bit, a bear found her and proceeded to climb up the tree where she was perched on her climber. The bear was apparently interested in the odor she was emitting...she was menstruating. She shoood the bear and threatened to shoot it. The bear responded appropriately and left her alone.
I hunted the lease and was amazed at the quantity of crap in the fields. Although the bears were thick as fleas in the area, I never saw a single one whilst hunting there.
Just talked to my father who was telling me about a farmer near us (South of Lynchburg, north of Danville) who decided to raise organic hogs. Bought some nuts of some sort and put them in a creep feeder for the hogs, and a bear got into it. Hogs approached the creep feeder with bear near it and bear killed 6 hogs. Didn't eat any of the hogs, but apparently was just defending its new found feeder.

We belong in the woods just as much as the bears. Or at least some of us do. We didn't evolve in some suburb eating gluten-free tofu and wearing Birkenstocks and driving Priuses (Priusi?), as much as some people seem to think that is our natural state of being. Humans, at the base, are bloodthirsty predatory woodland animals that can hold their own with the best of them.
@yallerhammer Do you believe in evolution?

@peter p , New Jersey and Bears in the News! This was my old stomping ground in the late 60s ...
A Boy Scout troop leader was mauled by a bear after he and three Scouts stumbled upon the animal in northern New Jersey on Sunday, the Rockaway Township Police Department said.
The three Scouts accompanying him were unharmed, officials said.
The Boy Scout leader, Christopher Petronino, took the three Scouts to a cave at Split Rock Reservoir in Morris County, which is about 25 miles west of New York City. The 50-year-old had known about the cave since the 1980s but had never witnessed a bear using it before, according to CNN affiliate WCBS.
When Petronino entered the cave Sunday afternoon, a black bear reached for the Scout leader's foot, biting him on the leg, shoulder and arm, according to officials. Petronino then hit the bear with a rock hammer, curled up into the fetal position and shouted to the boys to call for help. 4

I encountered a number of bears in the SNP back in the 80s, while traversing and sampling all the streams. I learned much about bear trails, sign, etc. in environs where they are protected, but I never had a problem or was ever spooked.
It may be age, it could be a lack of fitness like running or agility to climb a tree, it might be the news of unprovoked attacks, but now I am awkwardly mindful of the big black critters. So wary that I renewed my conceal carry permit and picked it up at the Bath courthouse yesterday. Hopefully carrying a .357 will end looking over the shoulder when enjoying the Allegheny Highlands.
My feeling is there are too damned many of them, at least in my area, and maybe even in other areas like the SNP. My son has as many bear as deer on his game cam --- less than ½ miles from downtown Mountain Grove.
I may purchase a VA bear tag this year.

I agree. I think I'd definitely carry spray out west where you have grizzlies. Out here I feel plenty fine with a .357 if not better than I would with spray. Black Bears are funny. Why do not attack often, but when they do, they mean business. Grizzlies will attack you just because they are pissed at you and leave you afterwards. If a black bear attacks you, it will eat you. Heard plenty of stories of a person who "played dead" with a black bear only to have the black bear start to eat them.
Bear spray? I can't hit my own feet with the spray Lotrimin. How would I come close to a charging bear with a spray of a dried fruit used for spice and seasoning?
With the firearm, there's at least the opportunity to shoot myself in the head before the sons-a-bitch completely gobbles me.

Can't say by experience, but I've read many Alaskan guides who strongly prefer bear spray over any firearm.
Bear spray is legit. We tested some last time I was in MT and it shot about 20-30 ft and we all were about choked out from the after spray. Pro tip, when testing it take into account which direction the wind is blowing.
We decided the best option if attacked would be to spray ourselves in the face so we wouldn't notice a grizzly was eating us.
Reminds of a story one of the CPA's in the office told me. She carries mace with her everywhere she goes and one day she had the mace out while in the office alone. She got to thinking about how she has never used mace before and it was an old can. She decided to test it out in her office and spray the corner of the room. That stuff got in the air of that office and got into her eyes so bad she had to go home and wash it out.

So, your unpalatable text reads:

Crowd-sized pepper spray sucks very badly. I can't imagine the actual bear stuff. From the videos I've watched, it'd be hard to miss the bear. Keeping your composure while it's charging would be the challenge.

I took a dose of commercial crowd control spray to the face from like 2 ft away. It was enough for probably 20 people, maybe more. I was drenched like if you soak someone with a water hose.
It wasn't fun. I wouldn't give him the satisfaction of going to the ground though, so I did without water to rinse with or to drink for 30 minutes. Cops, family, property damages.
The next morning was Thanksgiving, and also it was my birthday. Not good. Costs and grudges lingered for quite some time.
I don't miss that portion of my wilder days.

Lots of uncharacteristic black bear attacks out west this year. Wonder why.
I predict it is just a matter of time before someone in my area has a bad bear day. Last year, or maybe 2015, a hiker on the eastern side of the county was attacked. Officials killed the bear, but after analysis they discovered it was the wrong bear. No worries; there's just too many, way too many.
Everyone is seeing them and encountering them while fishing, hiking, and camping. Bear hunters are loving it – tree and release is the latest rage. Multiple reports of killing fawns, so I'm purchasing a bear tag this fall, and I have absolutely no desire to kill one, but their numbers just don't match the habitat ------another of Mother Nature's symmetries screwed by humans.
SJWH – maybe there's an unbalance that explains the western phenomenons.
I don't think the problem is to many bears, it's too many humans.

Or when WMT and River finally dump their wives or SOs and declare their perpetual love for each other, we can support them and all their same-sex kind --- they ain't proliferating.

We have had to keep our trash inside due to 2 bears that have been roaming about 2 square miles around here and tearing up all sorts of shit. Most of the neighbors within a mile also keep the garbage inside until the day of the pick up. 2 weeks ago, I had 2 paw prints on the window of my Tahoe.
One of these 2 bears is a monster. I got a look at him 3 weeks ago and he is 2 feet thick through the ass. It was almost dark and the flash on my camera wold not quite reach him dammit.

Bears getting into cars and trash isn't anything new in Asheville. The picture below is of the largest of the bears that frequents my street. This is a pic of him last fall, he's bigger now. The neighbors all call him "big bubba". He's one of the few large bears to not have been caught and collared for the urban bear study. I'd say 80% of the bears we see are collared. I live literally in the city, 1.5 miles from the center of downtown Asheville. What's interesting to see is how well the bears adapt to avoid people and avoid yards with dogs in them.

I keep a Deer Camera on the edge of the back lawn at my cabin in Basset. Checked it this past weekend and see I have a young bear making the rounds. I hope he keeps moving.

I have lots of deer photos as well. One thing I notice at this time of the year is deer with lots of ticks taking up residence in the deer's ears. I watch the deer from my kitchen window and this past weekend notice a lot of "grooming" by one deer on another deer around the ear area. It seems they are trying to either pull the ticks off or maybe just relieve the itch.

I've seen several bears recently – some very close to The Grove.
Several evenings each week I take a drive on the local backroads, with the beagle, bird book, and glass – looking for critters, particularly new birdies. Last week I saw the damnedest thing --- a deer about 100 meters out in a un-mowed hay field – with only the eye the deer appeared to have short black, velveted horns, but with the glass it was a red winged blackbird perched between her ears pecking the top of her head. Another rw blackbird flew up from the ground to her back, ahead of her tail and started gleaning her spine area. Ticks? Other inverts? Never seen it before.

In Africa birds dine on insects and worms that infect critters. Maybe birds are adapting here now that there are so many ticks and other vermin. I remember last year seeing deer with their ears almost twice there normal size due to infestations of ticks.
Just saw momma bear again, without the cubs. From what I've read, I'm guessing the two cubs with her on June 2 were yearlings (30-50 pounds?) If so, they would split up around this time of year.
That's our third bear visit this month that we know of, plus we saw a young one about two miles from here and another adult about five miles away.

"As we came on the bridge we could see the bear feeding below along the bank," he explained. While that may sound scary enough for some people, Dupras told us that it was actually quite a common sight as his family has been "catch and release steelhead fishing" in the area for over 45 years.
"We moved to the middle of the bridge so we could see the bear and give us safe distance as the bears occasionally come up the bank and cross the road into the woods to access the river further up," he told us.
Just as they had expected, the bear came up. "But what happened next was atypical from the behaviour we've seen in the past," he said.

>>>A Montana man who was mauled by a grizzly bear last week has died after suffering a "massive stroke" in hospital.
Carl Mock, 40, of West Yellowstone, was transported to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center on April 15 with "severe injuries" after being attacked by the bear just south of Baker's Hole Campground, roughly three miles north of West Yellowstone.
>>>The Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) previously confirmed in a statement that a grizzly bear was shot and killed on Friday last week—the day after the attack—as personnel investigated the scene of the incident, which was closed to the public.
>>>The agency said Mock was believed to have been carrying bear spray at the time of the attack but it was unclear if he even got a chance to use it on the bear.
The FWP said seven investigators who were deployed to the scene were charged by a bear before reaching the area, despite making "continuous noise," including yelling, in an attempt to "haze" the animal—the process of trying to scare off the animal.
"Despite multiple attempts by all seven people to haze away the bear, it continued its charge. Due to this immediate safety risk, the bear was shot and died about 20 yards from the group. The bear was an older-age male grizzly," the FWP said.
Investigators found a moose carcass within 50 yards of the attack, which indicated the bear was likely defending a food source during the attack, the agency noted.

Since nothing else was reported on the cause of death I sent a request for the autopsy report to the NC Chief Medical Examiner... we shall see ...
I have received the Autopsy, Investigation and Toxicology Reports.

three are some things in the report that make you ask some unanswerable questions...
I had been wondering about that. I spent two nights there last may right after park opened back up. I didnt see any sign of bear in three days of fishing.
I though the guy may have already been dead. Now after reading the autopsy it looks like the bear killed him. I hope it was quick and the bear wasn't eating him while he was still alive. This is at least the 3rd attack in the last couple of years. The other two were sleeping in hammocks and weren't fatal but the victims were bitten and clawed. I use to look at bears in the park as just a pest or a nuisance, not anymore. One thing I noticed was the bear consumed most of this guy's liver. I doubt the bear would have survied eating most of this crowd's liver.:cheers

It appears that some of them have learned to open car doors. I've seen 3 or 4 reports of them trashing someones car in East TN. But of course a lot of wierd things happen in ETN. I think she was just trying to put something between them. This woman is laughing, I'd be tracking that sob with bad intentions.

stupid humans... off lease dog should be the lead in the story and they should be FINED (IMHO) and BANNED from the PARKWAY!
Officials say they collected forensic evidence to use for DNA analysis. If the bear in question is captured and positively identified, officials will humanely euthanize the animal, per park and Wildlife protocol
I think we should shoot the humans and the dog instead of the bear. FB just kicked me off again for 3 days for that comment. :P :drum <-;:

>>> A Yellowstone tourist was caught on video walking toward a grizzly and her cubs. Now she'll spend days in jail for it. The woman from Illinois was sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court to four days in jail and one year of probation after she pleaded guilty to charges related to the incident, according to court documents. The tourist was also ordered to pay $1,000 to the Yellowstone Forever Wildlife Protection Fund, the nonprofit partner of the national park, as well as other fines and fees.

I've been reading comments about this incident for the last hour. According to public opinion we should have staked her out, covered her in bacon grease, and filmed it while the bears consumed her while she kicked and screamed in agony. :o b'; Yea she was stupid, but the world is full of stupid people doing stupid things every day.
4 days is a little light — 1-2 weeks would have been better and lifetime ban from national parks in addition to the $1,000 fine
She also had to pay $1,000 community service payment to Yellowstone Forever Wildlife Protection Fund. I guess she also had some court cost and legal fees, and a trip back to WY from IL, ouch! That adds up to a fairly expensive oops. Not everyone has money like you. Lifetime ban from the parks would probably have been meanless to her. The jail time wouldn't mean much to me. I'd be doing my time in a mental hospital

Bear injures Sumpter man
>>>Beckner, 19, who lives in Sumpter, said the encounter with the bear in his front yard, late on Thanksgiving, left him with scratches on his cheek and above one eye, among other injuries.
During a phone interview on Monday morning, Nov. 29, Beckner said the knuckle of the middle finger on his right hand, the one he used to punch the bear in the eye, was still sore.
So was his shoulder, where the bear briefly bit him.

I've never carried bear spray with me before. Gonna order a can of it to keep on my hip just in case. Was wondering, should one do a test shoot with their bear spray or is it pretty easy to use first try if you ever need to?

The most frustrating aspect of carrying repellent is where to pack it. Good repellent cylinders are expensive, and I would advise never to place them in daypack or backpack side pockets. The dispensers are slick cylinders, and are prone to disappear when thrashing about in the bush when you wish you had one.
Oddly enough, I've been approached by a large coyote, various packs of dogs, and have been grazed by falling trees three times, one of which could have been lethal, had a near miss involving a falling tree while driving. I've only encountered two bears in the bush, and both just wanted to get away from me.
I firmly believe animals and insects can smell fear on a human. Don't get rattled.

I've (knock on wood) never had a close encounter with any animal besides snakes but I feel like I'm due one at this point and I don't wanna be stuck with no way to defend myself. Looks like the repellant I'm looking at comes with a sheath you can hook on your belt.

EETEETSE, Wyo. (AP) — A hiker has been hospitalized after being mauled by a bear, believed to have been a grizzly, in the mountains of northwestern Wyoming, the state's Game and Fish agency said Tuesday.
The man was hiking Monday at high elevation on Francs Peak, a 13,000-foot (4,000-meter) summit southeast of Yellowstone National Park, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department said Tuesday.
The surprise attack happened too quickly for the man to use the bear spray he was carrying, officials said.

Recently we had a bear incident here in The Grove, up Back Creek approximately half mile.
First, the bear broke a screen window and retrieved a jar of peanut butter from the table. Window fixed and next, the bear crawled through the window and found the trash can. Windows boarded and then, bear ripped some of the dwelling's siding. I heard the next step was an electric fence.
Tenacious critter that needs an attitude adjustment, I say. It is unlikely that I would ever kill such an animal, but it would be a hoot to employ paint balls or bear spray or ????.
I've quit carrying food/snacks of any kind when I fish in bear country. It is just unnecessary weight to carry anyway.
The loss of some gut lard is an added benefit which my knees and hip joints will thank me for later.
The problem bears around the smokies seem to be the ones hanging around homes and parking lots that are crowded. I have hiked more in the las three months than usual. Getting ready for a trip to mount baker. I have been up Baxter creek trail to mount sterling 2 times. done a loop in cataloocjie. Went from clingmans dome out to welch ridge down to headwaters of hazel creek and back. Did an off trail hike starting at cabin flats backcountry site going up Bradley to frowning rock prong up to the AT. All of these hikes have been in fairly remote sections of park with the exception of starting at clingmas dome. Have not seen a single bear. Last week my son and I went up rainbow falls to leconte. Parking last was packing. Had to park down the road awash. Saw a sow with three cubs in second parking lot and another medium to large bear on the road on the way out. These bears were within 1-2 miles from downtown gatlinburg and rainbow falls was the most crowded trail I've been on up to the falls. As a side note the reason for the very long trip out the AT to hazel creek was to get a quart of water. My grandson was baptized in May and he was baptized with hazel creek water😀😀
I have also done either 2 or three day hikes in shinging rock. They now require bear canister for overnight camping. I have yet to see a bear there either.
That was a heck of a hike down to Hazel Ck. I think that's cool that you did that for your grandson's baptism. I may get some from a special stream in my past for the one that I've got coming in Oct. The Mt Baker should be a nice trip. Any idea on the snow conditions this year? I've climbed Hood, Shasta, Lassen, and Rainer. The Hood route may have been the most difficult. It was early spring and a storm stopped us in our tracks for 2 days.
Don't know about snow but apparently a huge washout on road going to north side of mountain. Probably doing a route on south side. Got email from outfitter yesterday. Just landed in Vegas e route to Seattle.
Good luck and can I have your stuff if you die?
A camper scared off a bear — then the grizzly came back and killed her
Leah Lokan's death was 'instantaneous' after the bear broke her neck and severed her spinal cord, officials said
>>> Early on July 6, 2021, Leah Lokan awoke to a 417-pound grizzly bear a few feet from her tent, so close that she heard when the bear "huffed" at her head.
"Bear! Bear!" Lokan yelled, prompting Joe and Kim Cole — two other cyclists camping in the small town of Ovando as they trekked across Montana — to spring from their nearby tent, armed with bear spray and clamoring as much as possible, according to a 26-page report addressed by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee's executive body earlier this month.

Dustin Tolley and Adam Buckles were night fishing at Watauga Lake in eastern Tennessee on July 17, when something unexpected happened. "[We] heard the craziest sound coming off the mountain right towards the boat," Tolley wrote in a Facebook post. "So, we got the boat light to shine to see what was coming toward us, and this is what we saw."
Tolly and Buckles had unexpectedly come upon a black bear taking down a mature whitetail deer. While using a spotlight to illuminate the scene, they filmed a short video of the scene. The bear used its paws and jaws to pin the deer down, before dragging it up the hill away from shore as it flailed weakly.

This guy got to a deck birdfeeder in the middle of the afternoon, and pulled it down before we heard him and chased him away. So after years of bringing the feeders in at night, no trash cans, and 3-4 trips a week to the collection center, now our deck is a food source? Grrrr.
He didn't run like heck when we opened the door. Not a good sign. We had to use the leaf blower on him. He hated it, but not enough.
Thirty minutes later he came back, and that's when I took this picture. Looks like he's thinking of buyin' the place. Sorry. We like our bears, but we like them to be skittish. By the time I got to the bear spray, he was 30 feet away. I didn't reach him, but I think he got a whiff because he huffed a few times and took off.

This year, the grizzly bear seen holding a fresh salmon and trudging through the water was late to his usual hunting spot at Katmai National Park. It's not that Otis hit snooze on his alarm — you can blame climate change.
"The last time he showed up this late, salmon were also late, and the salmon were late this year as well," said Candice Rusch, a spokesperson with Explore.org, the site that runs the 24/7 live cameras at Katmai National Park. "What we've been seeing in Alaska is that the salmon run has been trending later into July, which means for bears like Otis waiting longer to eat that salmon."

I've seen human/jackass, human/cockroach, human/snake hybrids, most all were kin folk, but I've never witnessed a human/bear mix.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park Just Closed This Scenic Road Due to Bear Activity — What to Know
The National Park Service closed the Rich Mountain Road in the Cades Cove area as bears have been seen foraging for food.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park has closed a park road due to bear activity during a time when the animals are foraging for food.
The National Park Service (NPS) closed the Rich Mountain Road in the Cades Cove area over the weekend, noting some of the park's bears have "become habituated to humans and vehicles," according to the NPS. The closure comes at a "critical time of year" for the bears since primary food sources like berries and acorns are not in season.
The closure occurred after a visitor in a vehicle suffered minor scratches after an encounter with a bear in the area.
"By closing Rich Mountain Road, we are protecting people and bears," Cassius Cash, the park's superintendent, said in a statement. "When people intentionally attract bears with human food or pet food it can lead to a dangerous situation for visitors, local communities, and the bears."

Weekend before last my son and I hiked up hazel creek a good ways and back. Saw four bears in a two days. Saw my first wild boar in the park. They worry me more than the bears.

As many as he wants!
I knew mamas parked their cubs near easily climbed trees to protect them from predators while mama went grocery shopping. But I didn't know they had daycare centers.

An Alaskan Brown Bear Encounter that Changed My Life
A Fly Fishing Guide's journey of 20 years among the giant Coastal Brown Bears of South West Alaska
My first week of guiding in Alaska, and I found myself standing on the bank of a river, 40 feet from a massive Brown Bear. I'm frozen in place because I know I can't outrun it. It's not aggressive, but it ain't backing down either; it's just looking at me. Nothing really prepares you for this first encounter. It's funny, the thoughts that occupy your mind while in 'fight or flight' mode. I remember thinking, "This isn't what it looks like on television," and then, "Why did I take this job?" And the first lesson I learned that day? There is a big difference between an animal that sees you and one that is LOOKING at you.

Black bears in the backyard: Why they're everywhere, and what to do
The bear made its way down Main Street, cutting through backyards and getting into mischief, while Leslie Badger followed at a distance.
"He checked out a few gardens, helped himself to some vegetables and fruit trees," she says. "Then he found a nice pool to go swimming."
Badger is a police officer and the one-woman animal control department of Hingham, Mass., a suburb across the harbor from Boston. When a bear showed up at the beginning of August, it was only the second time she'd ever responded to an ursine issue.
"He was enjoying himself," she says. "He played with a pool noodle and a squirt gun toy, and when he was done, believe it or not, he went over to the filter and dumped it out. It was like he was saying, 'Thanks for letting me use the pool, I'll clean out my bear fur.'"

Not to disparage the hiker, but "aggressively pursued by a hungry bear" gave me a pause after watching the clip. The young bear may have been aggressive during the 45-minute engagement, in parts of the encounter not shown. And he/she may have been hungry, but appears fit, only curious in this short clip. I've seen many bears in the woods and damned if I can tell if they are hungry.

The bear was reportedly seen at Gorges State Park Wednesday, according to the North Carolina State Parks and Recreation (NCSPR) Facebook post.
They said the bear ripped apart the trailer overnight after reporting about the bear being in the area the day before.

I used bear spray earlier this year on a two-year-old that returned after I had previously chased him away with a leaf blower. It was the first time I'd ever used it. It shot quite a distance and it actually had a kick, and barrel rise. And most importantly, it worked.
If you are considering a purchase, don't get simple pepper spray, It is half the price, but is much, much weaker and may not do the job.
