Title: unlimited podcast
Post by: Woolly Bugger on December 18, 2017, 11:37:51 AM
I just got into DrakeCast (http://www.drakemag.com/drakecast.html)  V:; V:; V:; V:;
and I've enjoyed the four episodes that I've heard. Will keep this one on the playlist.

I've heard of and seen mention of the Barely Live Sessions a A kinda fly fishing podcast (https://soundcloud.com/barely-live-sessions) from the boys down in Charleston.

QuoteThe most ridiculous 2 hours of fly fishing podcasting out there. We just try to have a good time and talk about all the things most people would after a good day or bad day of fishing.with a cold beverage in hand. Anchored by Paul Puckett, Will Abbott, Michael Benson and Doug Roland...there is not telling what may happen or who may come by. Sit down and soak it in.

I've not been able to listen to a whole show, and wonder how they have 38 episodes in the library.

Y'all got any other favorites?

"Other" or any?  No to both.

When I want to listen to bullshit, I talk to myself.

The 50 Best Podcast of 2017 (https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2017/12/the-50-best-podcasts-of-2017/548165/)

This year, podcasts got funnier, sharper, and even more niche. Our recommendations here pass a vigorous audio smell test. First, the arrival of a new podcast episode must send you into an ethical quandary: How do I get out of at least some of my obligations today to listen to this? Second, you must be able to recommend this to a colleague with the knowledge that your reputation is at stake. A podcast that teaches you how to prepare your taxes by hand might blow your hair back, but it's doubtful you'll recommend it to anyone aside from your accountant. Third, we recused ourselves from ranking any podcasts produced by The Atlantic, including Radio Atlantic (https://www.theatlantic.com/podcasts/radio-atlantic/) and The Atlantic Interview (https://www.theatlantic.com/podcasts/the-atlantic-interview/). Finally, the podcast world, like any other sphere, is about what have you done for me lately. The best shows don't paint themselves into a corner. They evolve and progress or risk their listeners hitting "unsubscribe." Podcasts, like cowboys, shouldn't get fenced in. These shows generated maximum buzz, kept us refreshing our apps, broke boundaries, and made our future selves romanticize the golden years of podcasting.

I must ask.  Why would anyone listen to April Vokey without a continuous photo stream of her?    It is sort of like listening to the audio of The Opening of Misty Beethoven (1976), probably the best porn film of all time, without the moist, rolling, tumbling, pink images.  Is it not?

Help an old clueless man out; please explain.

Slate is currently doing a good one on watergate.  It's def an indirect political statement on our current affairs.
This American Life is almost always interesting.
More Perfect is good if you're into supreme court politics.
Radiolab usually covers some esoteric topics.
Fresh Air is consistently good.

Rinella kind of gets on my nerves.  I listened to the Gierach one and felt like he asked some dumb questions like he was super high or something.  Maybe he was.

I just came across this the other day. A multi-part serial podcast about the disappearance of Ronald Scheepstra.

QuoteOn April 11, 2009, Ronald Scheepstra disappeared from Xcalak, Mexico.

Ron and his companions had been to this remote area on fishing trips in both 2007 and 2008 and, as avid fly anglers, had done extensive preparation and planning.

For reasons that are not completely known or understood, Ron broke away from his friends in the early afternoon that day. He reportedly climbed from the shallow water and as he began to walk down the path, called back, "You go on. I'll be fine."
Ron was never seen again.

Fly Fishing Podcasts

QuotePodcasts have been around for several years but only most recently have I started listening to them. There has been a surge of them over the last few years and the fly fishing world has certainly capitalized on that.  New podcasts have been popping up all over the place, even Maine has a couple of their own. I have actually thought of doing one myself but I'm not sure I have the time.

I've put together a list of podcasts that gets me through my days in the winter driving at UPS. I hope you find something you like in this list!

Really enjoyed this Tom Rosenbauer podcast

In this week's podcast, we'll visit with the dynamic co-founder and president of Western Rivers Conservancy (https://www.westernrivers.org/), Sue Doroff [34:50]. Over the past 30 years, Sue and her small, lean staff have protected nearly 400 miles of rivers with names like the Madison, Hoh, Klamath, and John Day--rivers beloved by fly fishers. If you've ever parked at Three Dollar Bridge on the Madison River, you can than the Western Rivers Conservancy for protecting that stretch of river from development and for maintaining public access. Find out about their unique special sauce and how they do this.

My current go to is "Andrew Hickey: A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs."
Subscribe to this podcast now. Holy shit this Brit knows his music and history.
He starts with songs that have early influences and moves quickly into the 50's.
Started in Sept 2018. Got to #100 in Sept 2020. This is a long term commitment.
I'm in the 50's on episode #59, and really digging it.

Found this episode of the Dirtbag Diaries facinating.

Backcountry Brushes
The Dirtbag Diaries
Wilderness

The first time Ken Jarvela picked up a sketchpad in the backcountry in the 1980's, he decided he wanted to become a landscape painter. In his early 20's, he packed three months of food, a tarp, and a set of watercolors into the Trinity Wilderness and, over the next 54 days, taught himself how to paint. This trip would mark the first in many that would define his career as a landscape painter.

I've remarked before about how much I love this podcast.
Here's a sample about a song all of us have heard a bazillion times.
I fact, it's the most played song on the radio of the 20th century.
And so far in the 21st.
But you'll learn shit you never knew.
And you'll like, or hate, the hosts heavy Liverpool accent.

Blurry videos are prodding officials to rethink whether this bird is extinct
The U.S. government is holding off on its decision to declare the ivory-billed woodpecker dead, saying it needs more time to consider all the video and photo evidence

Nobody has seen one in nearly 80 years. Or at least those who have spotted it have trouble convincing others of what they saw: a red-crowned bird so awe-inspiring it's nicknamed the Lord God Bird.

Now fuzzy photos and videos taken in recent years by professional biologists and amateur birdwatchers have prompted U.S. officials to hold off declaring the ivory-billed woodpecker extinct for now.

so Matt promised a stiker if you send an email to fishbeerbbq@gmail.com with a phrase from an episode that you listen to.

On the latest podcast he explained the delay in the sticker mailing due to the fact that they sent them in square envelopes that were undersized and could not be "mechanically processed" by the usps.

my first email was simply

Name and address along with a slang name of my drug of choice as instructed in the podcast

Woolly Bugger
123 Maple St.
Centerville, OH

Drug; charlie

after not receiving said sticker I listened to another episode of 1-900-Fish-Beer and left a "review"

Then I fired off another email, cause I want my sticker.

QuoteSure you may have pissed off the post office with square stickers envelopes, but that is no excuse and I had to listen to another episode just to make sure I did t fuckup the email address.

All will be forgiven if you send one out before the end of the month! I've got a new RAV4 that is in need of some stickers.

Mail to:

The Woolliest of the Buggers
123 Maple St.
Centerville, OH

"you're messing with the wrong guy"

" reload!"

Here is his reply!

QuoteSticker incoming. Turns out my assistant was sending all the sticker mail to the trash. He's got problems. I'm trying to help the "kid" out, you know? In middle school he was paid $50 to distribute one thousand fliers for Little Man's Deli and Pizza on the campus of West Chester University, hand them out to students, put them under windshield wipers on every car in every parking lot on campus, you know, get the word out. Instead he threw them all in a dumpster and sat behind the 7-11 for three hours smoking cigarettes. We're not sure what's wrong with him. He's got a heart of gold but also I think I caught him torturing a frog a couple years ago. I don't know. On behalf of the entire staff here at FishBeer Enterprises LLC., thank you for being a faithful customer and I'm sorry you had a less than positive experience with one of our products. We hope that you can continue to trust us as your first choice for scent-impregnated fly lines and square envelopes full of sour cream.

Very best wishes,
Matt Dunn
