Onslow

Earlier in the week, the weather appeared to be shaping up for conditions anyone would be pleased with. As luck would have it, this is the day I became rotten with a cold, and somewhat stressed about the persistent wet weather in the forecast.  This weather situation moved me to work on some garden chores before departing. Thankfully, the Pine Hill Farm Supply had my truck loaded at 7:15, and I was shoveling the compost by 8, and in one hour, I was ready to roll.

A few destinations were considered, but I settled on a far flung place in one of the most remote places in Ashe County to test some new waters. What I failed to do this morning, was check the gages. As I neared Lansing, I caught a view of the NF New.  It was roiled and high...probably around 1500 cfs.  Sumbiches.  All the tribs were blown out.  Checked the gages and the SF Holston at Damascus was pumping 4000 cfs.  Factoring in this piece of data, There was nearly zero chance the stream I hoped to hit was going to be suitable.  I drove up anyway to scope the place out.  The creek was running about 200 cfs...not going to work.

I checked on the distance of some streams in VA that I enjoy, but the drive was about 1.5 hours.  To hell with that.  Back to the Yaddy drainage.  I stopped at Buffalo Creek alongside Rt 88 near Warrensville, and seriously considered spending the rest of the day there, but the water was a bit highish there also.  Wilkes county, lets do this!  Put the pin on a stream that is not designated being it was not turkey or deer season.

Sadly, I did not hook up with anything in the absolutely enormous pool.  I suspect a 20 plus fish resides here.

After about 3 hours of fishing...two fishing, and one catching, I started heading on back.  I felt kinda weak, and getting out of this hole sucks.  In hindsight, I probably could have fished another hour.

Up heart attack hill.
