Title: New game in town?

I'm hanging out at the local fly shop and I run into this guy (RiverbumCo,
on the BRFFF and a lurker on the Drake) who's been fishing for carps on
the local waters during the brood II cicada brood II hatch. We talked for
a while be he didn't exactly say where he was crushing the big carp.
A couple of day later I got a semi cryptic PM, "Interested in carp on
cicadas a la terd Fergusons tr on the drake?  Tomorrow.   Lemme know"
I replied and we worked out the details as Tropical Storm Andrea
threatened the east coast.  I took a look at the radar and read the
weather reports, "Weakened Andrea set to drench East Coast."
"you know it's gonna rain?", I inquired. "yeah, it'll be a warm rain" "okay"
After some confusion about the location of the boat ramp, we got things
confirmed, and I figured that if the weather really sucked I could bail in the morning.

Terd and RBCo pull up and we launch in short order. "All you need to
bring is a good attitude", says Turd as we cruise up the shoreline.
It's spitting pretty good and the wind is whipping.  They offer up the
bow to the bugger but I defer to Terd, "to see how it's done".

tools of the trade, one of these rods won't survive the day...

We moved up into some sheltered coves and it was easier to see the carp cruising.
It wasn't too long before the action started and Terd got a nice one to the boat.

Lani Pope, our local hyper weather babe, reported that we might have a spell of
calm during the otherwise stormy day, and she nailed it as the rain stopped and
the wind dropped for the rest of the afternoon.

Now it was time for "the Woolliest of the Buggers" to give it a shot. Terd spotted for me
and I had some good shots, but a) missed 'em, b) trout set, c) set too soon, and d) finally
hooked something other than the bream I was bustin.  The fish fought hard, hard enough,
and then when they see the boat, the really don't like the boat, they take off hard. Too
big to net easily, I brought the fish around again and then, trying to turn its head into
the net, I broke off! Damn. 12 lb test isn't enough! They boys rigged me up with some
20 lb and a fresh cicada pattern. I missed a few more before hooking up with a beast
of a carp. It took 4 to 6 minutes to bring this slimy bastard to the boat. A carp virgin
no more I had renewed confidence as we motored about in search of another.  More
missed opportunities, before we saw a big boy cruising off of a brush pile, I laid the
cast down in front and watched and waited as the fish slowly swam over to the fly, it
sucked it down and I waited a second before putting the steel to the fish. BAM! The 8 wt.
doubled over as this guy headed to the bottom. It was quite a while before we even saw
this fish again and then four or five more minutes as the fish towed the boat in circles
before I could finally work it to the surface. Once again the sight of the boat freaked
out he fish and line went out in short but hard runs.

The 20 lb line held and the biggest fish of the day was netted. Slime dripped from the
fish in buckets as I held it for the photos. After releasing, it I said, "I feel like a gynecologist",
as I shook and rinsed the slime from my hands.

RBCo finished out the day with some bass while we waited for the dual boat ramp to clear.

I had noticed that the flows on the SoHo were going to be favorable, and I didn't want
to ruin my chances of going by showing up late so were trying to get off the water by five,
which was good timing because the wind and three people on the boat had drained the
trolling motor battery. The guys on the left were having all sorts of issues, "Some people
shouldn't own boats." The truck would cut off as they tried to pull the boat, the boat would
slide off the trailer as the truck pulled away, the webbing on the winch broke, they
straightened the hook on the chain. They tried to motor the boat all the way up on the trailer.
They had been working on it for 45 minutes as we pulled into the now clear right ramp.

"5 will get you 10, we get out before they do," I remarked. Sure enough we were up on
the ramp getting everything sorted out before they finally got their boat pulled and I
heard one guy say, "next time fix the truck before we go boating again!"

The just to let you know that you in a rural shithead area, some oxy-loaded dude and
his GF step out of a junker with a smashed windshield and slides on over, and says in
slow motion, "I've got a boat, it doesn't have a motor. Do you know where I can get a motor?
Are they expensive?"  Then pointing to my fly rod, he mutters, "Is that hard to learn?"

There may be one to three more weeks of cicada top water action left, thanks for the
ride Terd and RiverbumCo. That last hook set plays over and over in my mind...

I know my recent exploits on the lake have opened my eyes to the sporting merit of ol'e rubber lips.  However, I'm not quite to the "fuck trout" point just yet if for no other reason than the beautiful places they live.  That being said, I'm already looking to fill up a fly box with some new carp patterns.  Man am I going to miss this cicada carp dry fly action!  Never have I had more fun with a fly rod in hand.

Trout are like women to me. I love them, I hate them but regardless, I always come back to them after brief absenses. Carp on the other hand are like my friends. They will always be on the top of the list. Therefore, fuck trout I still love you ???

I'm going once, but as for Brood X, this seems like a Potomac River thing.

If cicadas make some noise @ Burch on the Yadkin, I'll sound off.  Topwater Koi may be within reach.
