Avoid Rookie Mistakes

"So many people get lost," Kimmel says. "Knowing how to stay found is important." And that begins at home. Have a navigational tool, such as Gaia, and know how to use it. Leave a trip plan (the backcountry mapping app CalTopo (https://caltopo.com/map.html#ll=36.42657,-81.05215&z=14&b=t&o=f16a%2Cr&n=1,0.25) is a great resource) with a friend who knows when to sound the alarm if you're not back, or leave your plans in the console or glove box in your car. SAR will likely break in to look for information if you're reported overdue.

Why this one vs. Spot for example?

Better coverage satellite system?, phone app, bluetooth to phone, more/easier 2 way texting options from phone, map and waypoint downloads, varied subscription plans. $65 more for the mini than the Spot X. Meh.

Wives won't let J or I go to CA back country for a week without one.
I probably should have had one before now.

California is a big state with a lot going on.  Are you fishing for bass and stripers?

Not sure I'm down with fishing this shit.  This is the Yosemite backcountry.
