Title: Knots I've learned for Saltwater
Post by: Woolly Bugger on November 28, 2017, 20:30:29 PM
You are going to have to forget standard trout knots and go with proven saltwater knots.

Starting with the backing to fly line connection

Double Bimini Twist ( why do a single when you can just as easily tie a double}

Next up you can either use the welded fly line loop to connect to the backing or create your own loop by folding over the fly line and using nail knots to secure it.

Nail Knot Loop

You can use the welded loop or another nail knot on the business end of the fly line connected to your leader

I've been creating a loop in the leader by tying a Tarpon Loop knot. The can also be used to tie on your fly.

So here are some knots for you to practice...

Note: your rod may break before these knots give way, jis say'in

You could also use a uni knot for a loop or a double unit to make leader to tipped connections....

Believer in the nail knot loop.
You think the Tarpon Knot is really stronger than the standard No Slip Loop/Left Knot?

Depends on what brand rod you're using, Woolly....   :P

You backing may fail before these knots. As I found out 3 times in one day this year

seems legit and I now know it's stronger than a BVK

I now only use 50lb Power Pro for backing.

i've scoured the interwebs looking for backing issues and recommended replacement times, but all I've found is that most don't do it... Now I've discovered rotten backing on some of my trout reels and replaced it with some that boasted that it was rot proof. I think it's all made from the same stuff, Dacron, which is not supposed to rot.

But when you break 20lb backing when tying knots, something is wrong.

PSA, if it was ORVIS backing, bitch at them and they will replace your fly lines...

I build my big fish leaders . Fluorocarbon step downs . Tarpon is 60lb/40lb/20lb . Redfish 40/20/20. I use a double nail knot. Connecting knot is a Jon Caves open loop for baitfish patterns . I also use nail knot to fly line. I usually do a 7.5 ' leader. I don't like the hinge effect on a perfection or it going thru the shooting guide . I have lost big tarpon due to abrasion break offs ..
Caves knot is fucking genius .
