Rod, Mother is all right now.  She had back surgery, but she is back home now slowly recovering.

If you need any pointers on back surgery, I've had 4 fusions.

Good to see you catching those SMB (Smith River Browns)

Question for you guys...yesterday I had a guy tell me that he catches smallmouth out of the smith on a regular basis....anyone ever  seen 'em in there or is he blowing smoke? (Or smoking crack!)

Got me thinking about putting the boat in just above martins ville dam

They are supposed to be in Towns Creek.  So I have heard!  Some could occasionally wash into the upper river.  I have caught a redbreast in the upper river but that is it.  I would suggest you follow Peewee's and Wooly's suggestions.

I agree...seems more plausible but this guy was talking about where the river backs up between Kohler and martinsville dam....now I've taken my boat back there and caught some bluegill and even a couple largemouth but never fished it seriously.....hmmmmm....may have to spend the weekend exploring. I could do an eggleston to Mitchell float but I don't know about Eden.... that's damn near 13miles!

SRTU hosted an event last Saturday to promote the Smith and the club to non-members and newbies. We had decent turnout, with at least 8 members and 5 guests. Correct me if I'm wrong Scott. It was a beautiful day and expectations were high that we could put these guys on some fish. Guests came from Fayetteville, Raleigh and Marion, to name a few. Feather Chucker and Wind Knot were present and accounted for. Club/forum members Fin, Al, Shane, Consuminfire, and myself were there to impart some wisdom pitiful advice. We met at the Mirror Plant and some teams went upstream, some down and some jumped in from Fish Camp to Hayfields.

Paul started us out with a blessing of this unholy gathering and away we went.

My bunch. Team Flogger. I wadded out and made a few casts while my two guests finished rigging up. How could I be faster than them? :o
Like a good coach, I caught a brown on the fifth cast. "See guys, do it just like that!" It went downhill quickly from there. b';

The water was weirdly warm and we saw very few active fish. And nobody caught those, either. There was much sloppy wading, a pratfall or two, a lot of tippet sacrificed, flies donated to the shrubbery and egos bruised. I played coach/spectator most of the time, but even when I did fish, I could not score another fish. Of course we probably spooked every one within a hundred yards. Two fish for three anglers bumbling idiots. Hmmmm, that means someone got skunked? 8)

Hey Mudders, what's this? Just off center to the lower left. Looked like a miniature horseshoe crab. Saw quite a few of them when I resorted to playing with rocks. On a good note, I saw more insect activity on the Smith's rocks than I normally do! Excellent plant day, too.

Good show guys - Big thanks to all who showed up.

I have to learn the hard way first. Try every fly in my box that obviously is not working, use 8ft leaders, wade quickly. What really sucked is when Fin and I used the same fly and he was behind me catching fish after fish and I wasn't even getting a hit. I used to think I was kind of a decent fly fisherman. The Smith showed me otherwise. I think if you can succeed on the Smith you can probably catch fish anywhere in the United States.
