I knew there was going to be a problem with the storm coming. The creeks were already high and the ground saturated. DRO said the road is blocked off beyond the shop at the entrance to the NF. I still remember years ago (2010?) when it flooded so bad it washed all the fish out of the hatchery into the parking lot at the NC wildlife center. Just a few years before that it washed the old wooden bridge out at the hatchery and a big rock and mud slide closed the road beyond the hatchery for years.

The Davidson drains faster than most, looks like Haywood County is underwater. People are missing. Hope the Hillbilly is OK https://www.wral.com/houses-bridges-washed-away-fred-hits-western-nc-with-force/19830479/ (https://www.wral.com/houses-bridges-washed-away-fred-hits-western-nc-with-force/19830479/)

Extreme Meteorologist Reed Timmer was on the scene as torrential rain from the remnants of Tropical Storm Fred led to severe flooding in Pisgah National Forest on Aug. 17.

Yep, I'm ok. I got caught in the mudslide traffic nightmare on I-40,, took me three and a half hours to get home yesterday afternoon. Then, the Pigeon was flooded across the road below my house. I live a stone's throw from the Pigeon, but I'm up on the hill. My truck looks like I've been mudbogging just from driving to work this morning on paved roads.

Yeah, it's a damn mess. Not nearly as bad as Ivan back in 2004, but bad enough.  Still lots of roads closed, including 74 through the Nantahala Gorge.

I saw some pics today from a guy I work with who lives in Cruso on the Big east Fork of the Pigeon. His house is pretty much destroyed. They won't even let him go back up there. Houses sitting in the middle of what's left of the roads, lots of houses just gone. Pile of cars and trees and house trailers and campers and utility sheds. Houses on top of piles of cars. Trout laying around dead on the ground and swimming in puddles. It's unbelievable, looks like a nuke dropped.

That section that's closed is from Cruso to Brevard. It's a winding 2 lane goat path and I imagine it's wiped out in many places. Gonna be a long drive for someone to get around that section. No access to the Blue Ridge Parkway in either direction for miles either.

I heard the triple arch bride on 215 had heavy damage, too.

Oh no :'( That one is a beauty. I've seen photos of some of the bridges on the Davidson. They aren't safe and I'm sure they will be closed for a long time. All the forest service roads are closed over that way. The last time FS475 was damaged it took 3 or 4 years to open. The bridge at the hatchery looks like it's toast. The last time that was wipped out it took 3 years to replace it. I've never seen damage like this. I'm sure the US Forest Service doesn't have money to replace them.

>>>Authorities combing areas of North Carolina flooded by the remnants of Tropical Storm Fred said Thursday that two people have been found dead and about 20 were unaccounted for.

Meanwhile, Fred — now a post-tropical cyclone — was pushing through New York and New England with drenching rains, and Tropical Storm Henri was sending dangerous waves onto East Coast beaches. Forecasters said Henri will likely strengthen into a hurricane as it approaches the northeastern U.S. early next week.

There's very little low lying development in the South Toe watershed.  It flows through 1 golf course, a couple campgrounds, and a whole lotta bupkiss.

The one in the article is not the triple arch, which is farther upstream and just downstream to where Flat Laurel comes in.  From what I can see in a brief glance at the article's pictures, the stone bridge structure itself may be ok, but the pavement and embankments are going to need some major work.

I'm the stormwater engineer for my county's roads and bridges dept.  I'm no structural engineer by any means, but I agree with this statement 100%.  I've seen bridges with holes through some of the steel supports and bridges with rotted out timber supports.

terrible. I hate it for Haywood and Yancy and the surrounding counties and the people.  I was just up on the S. Toe in August, and I fished off hwy 215 last year on both sides of the parkway.  beautiful country up there.

keep the updates coming, please.

I'm thinking the rain from Ida is not going to help those still trying to dry out from Fred. Folks I know from that area fared OK but many of their neighbors didn't. There is also the loss of many jobs - folks whose homes survived tell me they don't have a job to go to. Their big fear is some of the businesses that are flooded may use this as an excuse to pull the plug entirely rather then rebuild.

We just got a couple inches from Ida here in Haywood, thankfully. No flooding that I saw. I don't think we could have stood another round.
