Title: FNG
Post by: ryguy on September 14, 2016, 14:50:09 PM
New guy intro here.  I'm Ryan, live in Richmond, work in Richmond, and fish all over.  Primarily fish for trout, but also chase smallmouth when the water warms up.  Trying to learn the Smith as best I can, and I have fished Mossy a lot, as well as the mountain streams of western VA.  I also hunt birds, which are few and far between but my Setter likes the exercise.  Some pics go without saying, so attached are pics of a Smith float from Labor Day.  No trout caught, only 1 chub.

Man thats a pretty shitty intro.. But you're a fellow bird hunter so, you get a pass from me. The other won't be so lenient.

What kinda bote you got?

Ehhhh.... you tried, which is more than some of the other recent intros.

Put in some more fishing pictures/fish, alcohol, hell anything.

Go back and look at some of the better intros and then add to yours accordingly

I hate Mossy.

You ought to fish for those Stripers that run the James.

The grouse dog IS the best part.  He doesn't always get on a lot of grouse, but he will hunt as long as I can walk behind him.

13' Rocky Mountain Raft with frame.

Fished for Shad on the James and Rappahannock, never had much luck on the James but always find them on the Rappahannock.

Short & shitty.

Beautiful pup. We had one like that several years back when we messed with the birds.

Mossy is on my to-do list. I don't know jack-shit about it.

Smith -- Meh.

Post some reports. Pictures of whatever are appreciated.

Dee Vo, you know Mossy is just a glorified pellet head stream filled with cow crap right? Never understood the love for mossy.

No, sir. I had no idea. I was only aware of it's popularity. If it's nothing but stocker water, well, I'll just go ahead and scratch that one off the list. The intel is most appreciated, J.

Mossy - mudhole, overfished, over cowed  b';
The Rap - underappreciated
This intro - foul pop, needs better contact, but you're swinging, some promise
Nice pup

Ive never understood why people don't know it is stocked. People swear up and down those are wild fish. Petey use to go down there with pellets and chuck handful in the stream and the water boils he said.

The Rap is on my list as well. Anything unappealing there I should know about?

Access sucks. A canoe/kayak, raft down, get out and wade river. Long distance between take outs.
Could turn into a loong day on low water. Rappahannock and Rapidan, rivers of my youth.

I shall try it at some point. I'll remember to refer back to you while planning.

Jesus Christ dude, 10 years to do an intro.  That may be a record.

You got any grouse left to hunt up there? They used to be thick down here, but have pretty much almost disappeared over the last decade or two. Used to be able to flush half a dozen in an hour or two, now lucky to flush one in a couple days of tramping the woods in most places.

I've only jumped a handful in the local mountains during the last several years. Sad.

Grouse can be found but they are fewer each year it seems.  Find the habitat and try to cover as much ground as possible. Typically with the dog we will find a bird or two.  Best day was 4 flushes two years ago.  Woodcock are prevalent around here and hold well for the dog.

Four flushes is your best day? Damn

When I walked the hills, I'd get 8 or 10 on average. Best day had over 20

Times are changing for sure

15 years ago 6-10 without a dog was a good day.  It's steadily decreased and now 4 flushes is my best day.  Regardless, still a nice walk in the woods.

Same thing in Michigan.  Numbers keep going down.  Used to cycle on that 7 year theory.

Ours were 90 plus percent gray phase.  All I see is brown in Madison County.
