Title: Albies 2016
Post by: driver on September 25, 2016, 14:15:58 PM
Figured I'd start a continuous thread for this years albies. As I expect many reports to follow.

Well it seems too be getting better every week.  This fish are still small bit their fight isn't. Me a Franzy (aka Blue Ninja) went down yesterday. Found lots of fish, but were tough to catch due to them not staying up for very long. But managed a to put several in the boat.

Will be changing gears this coming weekend, by heading to the Rockies. But will continue to be after albies after that.

It was a Bojangles kind of day

and before I get shit for being dressed as the blue ninja didn't really have a choice, last week was in Florida with the family spent alot of the day fishing and got sun burnt really bad.  Just started peeling and didn't want to go through that again.

Also on another note, at the beginning of the day I was telling Jason how I would have to get a new intermediate fly line soon because mine was getting old.  Part of the way through the day I was pulling line off the reel to cast and the line split in half.  Done.... b'; b';  Had to finish the rest of the day with a heavy sinking line.

Anyone got any recommendations on a intermediate line?

Tough day foe ablies. Fish were really scattered and not staying up for long. And very picky to fly selections.
2 ablies and a bluefish

Well, I almost didn't go this weekend. Saturday was jacked with 20kt wind. Sunday's weather report was calling for 15kt wind out of the North/NW, not good. But a NW wins is better than a South. Late Saturday evening they changed it to 11kt. That's do able. Arrived at 9am and the fish were only a short bumpy ride away. Once we were in the middle of it, you could look in amu direction and see fish busting. Not a lot of pics from me due to having to deal with the boat in the wind and the non stop action. But we probably had 12 to 15 in the boat by lunchtime.

The action slowed after lunch. We picked up a few more, then it just died. So we rode to see what was going on behind a trawler. Not much except for about 100 spinner sharks thrashing the surface behind it. So I broke out the 10wt and steel leader. Changed flies after one broke the hook at the bend. (Partridge Musky hook 7/0) Switched to a cobia fly. (Gama 7/0) made a few cast and the as the fly landed on the water a shark took it like a trout sipping an emerger. Battled that giant for about 10min until it bit through the steel leader. I called off the shark hust after that.

Went looking for more ablies and found some all scattered out over a large area. It was tough to get to this fish bit we picked up a few and called ot after that.

Pretty epic day

Like Jason said even that morning we debated doing something else, thought about going to chase some brookies because the wind. Glad we didn't!  Got on to fish pretty much as soon as we got out and were on them most of the day until it slowed down around lunch.

2016 - 81

Text comes in from Driver, "Wanna go for a boat ride?" "Sure, " I reply, "when do I need to be where?"
"Got any heavy gear?"
"8 wt"
"That'll do"

That's how my first False Albacore trip started. In the past I've always been on call during a month long period that spans the albie season, but not this year, the proposed BAT takeover of RAI has put that annual project in jeopardy. After some discussion about the end of Daylight Savings Time, we agreed to drive down Saturday night to be able to get on the water at daybreak.

We moved on out and chased after the first trawler with hopes of finding feeding fish. The ride out was pretty brisk, but not unbearably so. I made a few cast into the wake before we decided to head along Shackelford Banks to inside the hook of Cape Lookout. Fish were busting bait everywhere and I hooked into my first Albie on my second cast. Jesus, those fuckers can fight! Crank that drag down tight, those mothers can run! With three in the boat, we sort of took turns, but had many doubles and a triple hook up to boot. For the next four hours the action was insane.
It looked like this....

It was all pretty much fun and games, until I hooked a hot fish and was feeding line when, "Oh, shit!" there is a knot in the fly line. "Crap," I had only a second to try and pull it out, but I was too late and it popped through the guides getting hung up somewhere near the tip and the ¾ of the TFO shot 30 feet out into the water and I was left holding on the butts section with a whirling knuckle busting reel. Franzian came over and retrieved the rod from the sea as I was able to get the fish under control and put the sections back together.

We lost some fish on hooks that bent out, and a hot one that ran far into the backing and then got tangled up with a fish from another boat. But no rods were broken. The fish spread out in the afternoon and didn't stay up long. So after many frustrating chases we finally called it a day an hour from sunset

I was putting together my TFO 8 wt and Ross Evolution reel when Driver says, "I hope you don't have an Albright Knot on that!" "Why, yes," I replied. "Good luck," was his response.

Well my knots held and were tested time and time again. The Ross did it's job too despite the fact that I had to tighten the drag down all the way. I did lose a couple of fish, one when the line got caught around the reel seat, breaking off at a perfection loop and another fish, which may have been my best of the day, ran well into the backing and then got wrapped up with a hooked fish on another boat, that time the 25 lb leader broke at the hook.

We approached a bait ball with albies jumping and slashing as I laid out a cast and I swear that a fish took the fly before it hit the water. That was a damn awesome moment, that and the several fish that slashed at the fly close to the boat as we stripped in the line, missing only by the slimmest margins.

Here are some more pics from the other day, along with a beer shot that I had intended to include in the original TR. I can't stop dreaming about fishing for Albies.

2016 - 85

I called Jason, "looks like I'm in for tomorrow, I'm up on the river now, but I'm leaving now and will be at your place around eight."

We transfer geared and heading on down the road to the motel, but then this happened.

Four of the five lug nuts came off without too much of a struggle, but #5 was a royal pain in the ass.

It wasn't long before we found albies bustin bait, just out of the harbor.

We chased after the small pods for a while but headed over to the main event, and on the way had a whale come up so close to the boat, we stopped and watched for a while....and I took some crappy POS shots, "D" took out the DSLR and might have some much better images.

I tail waved good-bye and we continued on...

It was really calm in the hook and fish were chasing bait up close to the shore.

Then Jason hooks up and the reel spins like crazy and keeps going, taking him into "uncharted backing" he worked that fish for 10 or 15 minutes, before calling out, "I think we're going to have to chase this one down." Maybe 10 minutes later he got most of the fly line back and then...

"Damn, that thing I huge"

Radio chatter indicated that there might be Reds on the east side so we went for a boat ride, we had some shots at albies there but overall it was pretty quiet and headed back to the hook later in the day with the tide change. More albies were caught and before we called it a day and headed back.

Welp, that about summed it up. Slack tide was the suck. Mainly just bs'd with other fishermen drank some beers.

I brought the DSLR hoping to get some pics of busting fish. But spent too much time trying to catch them on hook than camera. Here are some snaps from yesterday.

Lol. I knew you were good. A quick swerve/stop towing is always interesting. Seen bad shit happen to the cargo.

Tie all of you materials on the top of the SC15 and throw a ball of CCG around the head and eyes. It will give a better profile in the water with that SC15

I went back to look at this tread. I think it needed a bump to the top.

I hope it starts off this good this year.

10 days, chief. Realized my old reel for the 9 wt probably wasn't gonna cut it. Ordered a new Echo with a real drag. New backing too.
Gonna strip down the 10 wt reel too. And check/re-tie some knots. Double Biminis.
Then tie some minners.  -0-
