Even the best made plans get changed on occasion.  Such was today.  After a week of watching water, trying to figure out clarity and flows, and making a plan to float a new to us river, we arrived to a closed ramp and logs nearly across the river.

So on to plan B.. an hours drive west.  Crossed the mountains on 33, and saw a lot of hillside washed away from all the rain these past few weeks.

Water upon arrival was at good flows, but cloudy and not ideal for fishing.  Can't give up a good day to fish, we embarked and gave it a good try.  3 fish to hand, a large snapping turtle, bald eagle, and a few carp feeding made it a good day.

Rising early and on the water not too long after sunrise yesterday morning. My river surprised me with far less clarity than I prefer. The rains we've had were still showing their effects on the river. Muddy. This sucks as I can't see where the hell I'm supposed to step without busting my ass or finding myself over my head in dingy water.

I pressed on several hundred yards. Fishing sucked. No smallmouth. I did get to cast my new 8 wt. and try out the new reel, however. I have this one spooled with sinking line. Makes a big difference getting the fly down.

In the end I did find myself pulling in one of the chunkier rock bass I've seen in this area. Fatso.

Took Doug's improved toon down the river after work for a test float.  She did good. Like the set up.  Fishing was alright.  Numbers were good and size smallies kept it fun, nothing big though.

She floats

Had a bear cross the river right in front of us.  Cool to watch.

And then I hooked a chub on a popper which then got hooked to my own chub.  Never have had a chub on a popper or a chub on my chub.

Good bug life at headlights as we took the boat out of water

It went down the river. Would not want to try that section at much lower water.
Dumbass rookie on the sticks. Got us hung good once. Partially hung twice.
Figured out the towers still need to come down about 1 1/2". And I need another foot to the oars.
I was not getting enough of a bite in the water.
New shafts ordered this AM. Sawzall goes to work later today.

Trailered good. New hand winch and looong cable with round fence post rollers worked well for the 50' take out.  n!n

Nice looking cat!  Looks like the rivers are doing well after the constant rains this spring.  Hope to get back out soon.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.
