Title: Finally saw a bear
Post by: peter p on July 12, 2007, 20:31:53 PM
Around lunch time today, I noticed my birdfeeder was empty.  So, I went out to the garage to get some sunflower seeds.  When I got to the garage, the seeds were not where I thought I left them.  So, I assumed I must have left them outside.  Why did I assume this?  I have no idea.  I never take the bag outside.  I always fill up a cup of seeds and bring them outside with me.

So, now I leave the garage and walk to my back yard to look for the seeds.  While I am looking, I hear a load noise.  I look around and a cub runs right next to me.  I look up and see Momma and 2 other cubs about 20 feet from me.  So, I crap my pants, walk backwards towards the house to change my pants and get my camera.

Ok, I am not dumb enough to get between a mother and its cubs.  But, I have to get a picture of my 1st bear in my yard.  Well, Momma wanted nothing to do with that.  She was not happy with me being around.  So, back to the house for me.

Luckily, they moved to the neighbors birdfeeder and hung out there for a good 30 minutes.  Once I figure out how to post  a pictures, I will add them.

All in all, an exciting day for me and a good diversion from work

Cool story, all i get is coons and possums,  from what I hear there is going to be a lot of bear sightings this year/fall as the mast crop (acorns) will be small to non-existent.

To post a pic... look below the message window in a post or reply and click on "+ Additional Options

Read HELP for further details.

Interesting post.

I live pretty near Charlotte, near Mt Island Lake.  We have large lots in our development and ours, among many, back on to the flood plain of McDowell Creek.  In other words, there is a lot of undeveloped land, mostly woods and river bottom, behind and around our house.

About our second year here, I went to put bird seed in our  back feeder, that hung on the edge of the woods.

The tree that it was on was bent over and shredded, and the feeder was in pieces.  A couple of surrounding small trees were mashed down or bent as well.

I opined it might have been a bear, since I don't think a big raccoon could have made such a mess.  Everyone laughed at me, but I still think Mr. or Mrs. Bear gave us a visit the preceeding night.

As to the lack of winter food in the mountains.

This weekend I took a walk in the woods to make my own assessment of the food availability.

My take is that this is going to be the worst year on record for woods food in E Tenn.
There will be no acorns. The persimmon trees are not going to bare. The cultivated crops such as corn are only 2 1/2 feet tall now and the corn has been in the groud for 2 1 /2 months.
There will be no apples in e Tenn. Which is a big source of food for the woods animals
A friend of mine in E Tenn said that they hayed a field that they normally get 80 round bales off of and they got exactly 27. The recent thunderstorms will allow the farmers to get another hay crop, but it will be mediocre at best. The price of hay is going to be outa sight.

I suggest that the bears will be  "IN TOWN" during the fall and winter.

Hope I am wrong, but my walk said that there is no food in the mountains. The only good food source I saw was black berries and that will be over by mid September

  Just one man's assessment

Peter,  from the main screen, find the picture you want to post and double click on it.  With the picture opened up, there will be a menu at the left.  Click on "Crop".  Now place your mouse pointer over the picture, and draw a rectangle around the part you want to post.  It will take a couple of tries to get used to getting the rectangle just where you want it, but you can undo, by clicking "Reset", and redo as many times as you need.  Once you've selected the part of the picture you want, click "Apply".  Again, you can undo and recrop until you are satisfied.

Once you have the picture the way you want it, go to the bottom, and click "Export".  Click on the dot that says "Resize to:" and move the slider to select the size.  640 works well for posting.  When you click OK, it will save the file and take you to the directory where you saved it.  Make a note of the location, and you may want to rename the output file.  You can also copy it or move it to a better location.

Next time they come up there try feeding them some cookies. They really like cookies and they will come close enough for you to get some good close up photos. 8)
