Are you coating the hurl w/ head cement...looks shiny in the photo

Yes,
I coat the herl with Griff's thin multi coat.
The herl last longer when I coat them vs. no coating.

Nice combo Karl.  Did I give you any of the tan a brown ju ju's last fall?

Super hair last longer than that  stripped herl!

Nice- My stripped herl bodies look like shit in comparison. You really have the segmentation down. I am sure this is a good one greased to sit just below the surface as well.

Question about this pattern-I have seen mention of other colors, does the original just incorporate a ribbed floss body or somthing?

The original calls for a Super Hair body.  From the creator:

Hard to argue with the stripped peacock herl though--amazing fish catching properties for whatever reason.

Yes,
The original pattern calls for a super hair body, I am waiting for some to arrive in the mail, but wanted to fish this pattern in the interim. I also tie them with floss bodies. This pattern does well fished deep too.

just got some Superhair and tied a few last night. now, that you have been playing with all of the body materials for a while, which one do you like the best?-Superhair, Stripped P-cock Herl, DMC thread?

any work any better? I am just wondering if any of them have a better fish quotient?

thanks

Another killer pattern! Thanks for sharing.
Your DMC yellow and olive was the ticket yesterday.

Sorry for the late response,

All the materials have their unique qualities, I like the stripped herl for its ease of wrapping, but the DMC has a myriad of colors to choose from, and when wet changes the tones and hues to closely matches the midge pupa colors I have found so far.

The Super hair in easy to tie in and wrap also, with the added advantage of durability, it last longer than stripped herl, but the colors are limited

Each one will produce fish, but I would have to give the herl a slight advantage in its consistency to produce. But there have been times when the others have produced fish when stripped herl would not.

It boils down to whats hatching, and what colors are in the feeding columns the day you fish. I always turn over a few rocks, to see whats clinging to them, or seine the current to find the right color combinations.

How is the best way to strip the hurl?  I have heard you can use an eraser or bleach?

pencil eraser works for me..

Like Keith suggested, a pencil eraser works best. I use the softer pink erasers and work the herl in both directions, then turn it over and repeat on the opposite side.
The softer erasers, remove the feathers better and don't damage the quill.

Thanks a bunch, TP.  I will try to hunt down one of those soft erasers.  I had been using a regular pencil and it was splitting some of the quills.  Somebody had said something to me about bleach, but that sounded a little too much like chemistry class.

Thank you.  The soft pink erasers work like a charm!

Karl,

Not to be a smart ass, but......how do you get the tippet through the eye of that hook?

Thanks,

Ralph,

I don't cover the eye. I know you've been suggesting I use 12/0 thread, but that would just require me to keep another size thread around.

I tie everything with 8/0, thats all I keep on my desk. If I ever get to the point where I cant thread the small flies, I'll try 12/0 size.

Other then the benefit of using a smaller diameter thread, there is no motive for me to use it, the fish don't seam to mind 8/0.

I exclusively fish 6x tippet, never going larger or smaller. 6X threads through the eye very easy.

jis be'in frugal

For the skeptics, among us.

I tied another one using 8/0 thread, after the head cement dried, I poked the eye clean and threaded in some Rio Flouro flex 6x tippet, tyeing in an Orvis knot.

phish,

I hear ya!  The scond one has more of the eye showing, it just looked to me from the pic that that first fly would be hoard to get tippet through the eye.

I used 8/0 yesterday because I didn't have any gray in the 12/0.  Worked out just fine just had to watch what I was doing and keep the build up down.

Tied a Ju Ju in Craven's blue tung colors....smoke and blue.  Turned out looking pretty good, can't wait to test it on the fish.
