Spring break 2012, my freshman son came home for the week.
He wasn't home much as he was out running around with friends
and going on day hikes. I almost got him to go fishing with Sally
and I, but one text and he was off doing something else but
promised to go fishing another day. Yea, right, I thought.

But come Sunday, and he's all ready to go, up before me,
despite him not getting home until after three.

I had decided to go to the South Holston, for  several reasons,
I was confident that I could get him into some fish, not too far a
drive back to school, wide open casting, and having the proper
flies. After the drive over the mountains, we arrive at the river,
and amazingly the parking spot for a primo run is vacant!

Excellent I say, as we're suiting up, he asks, "What about snacks?"
"Snack, we don't need snacks!"

On to the river, we catch the pulse, and the fish are feeding.
I'm playing the guide, rigging rods and putting him on the fish.
As he moved up stream I stepped in behind him and caught the
fish he left behind.  "You caught another one?" he stated in disbelief.
He had not been fly fishing in seven or eight years, and despite
his sloppy casting and late hook sets, he did manage to get into
some decent browns.

After the pulse passed the fishing really slowed down, but BWOs
started popping off. We waited a while to see if the fish would
start rising but eventually moved on down river.

In the fast water, he missed a number of fish, as was beginning
to get a little frustrated, but then he hooked a few more and was
determined to catch a few more. I hooked a big bow that danced
all across the river, and eventually jumped several feet out of the
water not five feet in front of him. "That was pretty amazing", he
exclaimed. But the fish was too hot to handle in the fast water
on a #20 hook.

We stopped before six, and headed off to dinner  before I dropped
him off at his dorm. I think I was smiling all the way home!

Hell, I'm smiling now, despite Florida State's bracket busting loss!

So here is the cool part; he is up fishing away from me and breaks on with the flies
tangled in a tree. I've got the fly boxes and tippet, but he doesn't want to bother me,
so he looks on the hat he's wearing and picks off a fly that looked like one he lost,
and bites off the tag end. Later, when we switch rods, I was always setting something
up for a run or hole, I asked about it, inspected the knot, said WTH, and tied on a dropper.
I caught at least 3 fish on the fly he tied on. He had watched me tie a fly on first thing
with a pitzen knot. I guess he got it right and the beat up old bwo that he picked was
the right fly.

As I dropped him off, I told him that I had a great day, and he said,
"Me too, we'll do it again sometime.!"

Sounds like you two had a good time.  I'm still working on getting my little one's interested and haven't had much luck yet.
