I have no plan of taking summer classes this year. High probability I will be in. I must consider that mama is gonna be pissed if I go to both this and Mr L. Dawg's gig the week prior.

Can I sleep on your porch?

I am still holding this in high consideration. I won't ultimately know until we are about two weeks out. Fundage is kinda tight for the unemployed college student.

We are going to get Karen at the store to do some biscuits and gravy Sat. Morning.  Streamer will probably cook some sausage also.
Low country on Friday night and grilled chicken quarters on Saturday.

Nice weather at Shady Valley, eh? We'll see.
A conversation with a local I remember while standing wet inside the store/gas station during the 2007 Shady Valley PFF --
"You're one o' them fishin' fellers what camps at Irby's field every year, ain't ya?"
"Yessir."
"We like ta see you boys come. Our crops always need the rain."

DD. I saw your PM and tried to reply. Not sure if it worked  b'; JT is tracking on my situation. fundage is not an issue. JT, I'll talk payment on the militia page.
I am about 90% sure I will be there at this point. I will know for sure by Friday.

that said, I may be of use in obtaining refreshments from the Fort Bragg Class 6. That's at a decent discount and tax free. So think about it and get me a list.
0:0 The motley crew at Leedawg's gig last week know I always bring beer.

Phil, I'd bring my bass, but I haven't a clue how to play it.

I've been saying that I would attend one of these for several years. The Army, School or Life just kept getting in the way. I finally caved.

I got on the road Thursday, but later than I wanted. I stopped outside of Boone to fish for a bit and take a break. The recent rains had conditions cloudy and fast.

Frustrated after 30-some roaches and two pune brookies, I got back on the road.

I rolled into Shady Valley as the sun was setting. Too late to set up a tent, I sat up and drank some beers with Croaker, Phil, Kyle, Peddler, ODG3, and bunch of other dudes who's names are a blur.

2017 – 46, 47

I rolled into camp of the 35th PFF, as the sun was setting, and ran into the old gang, there were quite a few old timers among the 30 or so fishermen, damn we're getting old. Kyle and Maniac talked me into a floaty trip for the next day. There was kind of a pot luck dinner thing going on with gourmet hot dogs, beans and fixins. Then everybody set about talkin and drinkin, over the years I've learned my limits so I crashed around midnight and left the pros around the campfire. The whooped and hollered into the wee hours and then piled into what I called "The circus tent!"

Friday morning we headed to the crossroads and had some breakfast at the local. Then we worked out the shuttle and I drove off following Maniac and Kyle. Shortly after hitting the blacktop, the truck swerved off the road and at first I thought they were going to lose the truck, then the boat and trailer swung over and then I thought they were going to lose the boat, but the Maniac held it together and I backed off a bit.

Plan was to take out at the lack and float from the dam, pushing through the top and concentrating on the lower sections where there was sure to be less traffic.

Tied on a fly that was tied for a drake swap and tied by WB25, it was a black and nasty articulated Galloup pattern, like a boogieman. It fished well and brought the only fish to the boat along with two follows. We were getting to the planned fishing sections when the sound of thunder came from over the ridge and soon we were seeking the shore to wait out the storm.

There were a lot of other boats on the water, but nobody reported having a bang up day.

It ended like this

https://vimeo.com/219008521
"We're going to die on the damn South Holoston!" - Kyle

Maniac stated, "don't worry, I can row out from here in an hour".

"it'll take longer than that"

"wanna bet?"

"Sure, I'll bet a beer" and we shook on it as I set the timer on the phone.

Fifty-nine minutes and forty-seven seconds later the boat hit the shore at the take-out!

We left Kyle sleeping in the boat while we fetched the trailer and I headed back to camp.

It looked like this:

The owner of 26 Acres Brewer showed up, but failed to bring any product, bad form IMHO!

Then I went fishing on a freestone, caught fish, but I was still wobbly from the night before, so I headed back to camp for some doghair.

That night it rained like hell, many a tent succumbed to the torrents. I bailed at four AM, the tape on the seams has failed and I couldn't find a drip free area in the tent.

A few guys missed the 8:30 photo session and a few more rolled in during the night.

It continued to rain through Sunday morning and I hit the road as the cook tent crew headed off to breakfast at the crossroads restaurant.

An interesting note--   All that rain and wind at 0230 AM Saturday turned out to be a tornado that touched down somewhere near Tom's house. It tore up someone cabin also

Damnation! When I woke up during that wind, I kept asking myself, "doesn't that sound like a freight train?" and "should I seek cover?"

I did seek cover immediately. Went and sat in my car for the rest of the night.

Let's see......I am in an open field in the middle of the night and suddenly this incredible wind starts blowing ........and I am in a tent that weighs less than ten pounds and  feels like it's going to become a box kite with me in it at any minute. (At the time I actually thought about what that might be like especially the landing part of the flight.) What are my options? Meanwhile parked just ten feet away is my vehicle and it weighs a lot......tough call. So I am a dumb ass, I stayed in the tent. Nobody ever accused me of being very bright.

Well I finally got back on the BRFFF ... I guess I can post my thoughts here.  Thomas Wolfe said "you can't go home again".  I'm not sure if that is true or not but I know you can always go the PFF again and that felt a lot like coming home.  It was great to see a lot of old friends after all these years.  It was also great to hit one of my favorite small wild trout streams again (twice).  It was definitely worth the long drive!  My thoughts

Hammering the wild trouts on thursday
Big ass grey mayflies coming off
Cooking dogs and drinking beers with the early arrivers
Phil's coffee that just never seemed to perk
Rick buying me breakfast Friday... Thanks, next one's on me Rick
Back to the blue line to pick up where I left off... managed to hammer them again
Chased off the stream by T-storm
Fished the B-dam with Fred for a little before dinner
GREAT LC boil by Don!
More beers and bullshiting Friday night
Catching up with some of the finest people I've had the good luck of knowing
Fantastic B-fast on Sat
Caught some nice ones on my way back north on Laurel... almost up to the the VA line

Special thanks to JT for bossing all the cooks and clean-up crew and Ralph for being the man with all the gear!

Blue Lining
