Title: Perfect Rubber Legs
Post by: Holmes on March 26, 2012, 10:38:19 AM
So having tied hundreds upon hundreds of stonefly and girdle bugs, I have tried a bunch of materials.

Silli legs- great action in water but fish break them off after a time.

Rubber- Less action in the water, becomes brittle and cracks over time.

Sexi floss- Great stuff, not as much action in the water as silli legs, and only comes in really fine diameter. Limited useful range of tying size.

I finally found the perfect product. It is called Perfect Rubber Legs by Hedron.

It comes in a hank of material--- you can tie everything from a size 2 popper to a size 16 girdle bug. All you have to do is stretch the strand out to the diameter you need. It does not return to it's original thickness, and fish cannot break it off the fly. The action in the water is bar none. If you tie a bunch of patterns with legs, get this stuff.

Nice.  I'll have to check that out.  I've been using the wapsi spanflex, which I've liked, has a nice translucence look to it as well.  Only problem is it develops too much memory and tends to curl up some out of the bag.

Spanflex is the same thing as sexi floss. You are right, it did have some memory problems. This stuff here, it's straight as an arrow and unbreakable. Can't beat it... You will enjoy the vast array of colors available. Wish I had discovered the stuff sooner!

Never seen that stuff but it looks bomber.  I have been using flexifloss which I like over round rubber legs.  But I bet that is better.

Well in the long run this stuff will eliminate the need for different diameters rubber and span flex legs. You can do it all with this one material, plus your flies will last a longer time... the hook will probably rust out before those legs break off.

I used to use this stuff as bow string silencers called living rubber. It came in a small sheet I believe and you pulled on it and it separated into nice thin pieces, great for fly legs. Here is a link to a description.

Petey,
Sorry for the last post/inquiry ---- I just did not see the thread.

I am a mad dog pan fish freak and use a ton of rubber legs on various bugs such as the Bully Bluegill Bug.
My question is  ::::  Are these legs round or flat ??     I use rubber legs that actually "swim" a little as the bug falls.

Stoneman,

These legs are round. They have a very active wiggle in the water(much more so than regular rubber) Only downisde is they aren't squared off like you'd want for that bully bluegill pattern.
