Title: Back up plan C - Return to the Mudwall Gatewood Manor

Well this trip had changed a couple times.  Plan A was to camp on a certain stream and fish it for a couple days, but the weather decided to be in the single digits at the altitude we would be fishing.  So Plan B was to just camp at a campground and fish a few streams in the area, but they added snow to the mix and dropped the temps in the valley as well.  Also got a stomach bug early last week and my body wasn't at 100% or in no condition to be in those temps.  Plan C was to stay at Mudwall's place and have heat and access to the NCAA tournament games.  Plan C ended up being a good choice.

Hit a stream on the way to his place, treated me well.

Nice long snakey brookie.  One of the only skinny trout I caught, most were real chunky.

Got this guy out of a nice run.  Surprised by the size of some of these fish in this stream.  Thought it was a stocker that traveled a heck of a distance, but think it was a wild bow after looking at the picture.

Boots were frozen solid.  Had to unthaw them in the stream.  Hit the stream around 10, at 2 pm it was 28 degrees out and the stream temp was 32 degrees.  Cold wasn't what was bad though, it was the 20 mph winds that made the day interesting.  The zippo hand warmer helped a lot today and a mid day fire.

Hell of a nice trip Jacob and Muddy.   'c;

I really wished I could have made it up there, hopefully next time.

BTW, I think that rainbow in question is a stocker, he's got a pretty flattened beak and some of his spots look suspect to me.  Although I could be wrong.

Yes, I hear ya, only thing that made me doubt it was his tail and fins.  If he is a stocker, he had a heck of a journey and that is all I'm saying on that matter.

enjoyed your pictures big J.  Looks like place C was a good time.
Mudders got a haircut!

Wish we could pull him out of his beloved Virgina to come down to Brevard in a few weeks.
Would've enjoyed sitting around a campfire with him.

You too did really well for the conditions. Especially the water temps.  bd;0

I'm voting wild bow. I know how far that fish had to go to get there.  :o Stockers aren't that ambitious.
And lordy what a brute of a brookie, Jacob.
Sorry I missed out.

I'll do Plan A, though.

Either a helluva spunky stocker or big wild guy but I'll defer to y'alls expertise.  Looks like a damn solid weekend.

We should all chip in to get muddy a selfie stick.

That was my thoughts as well.  Deserved to go back into her run even if it was a stocker.  If it was a stocker it made her journey even more impressive imo.

Fantastic.

Let's make it happen once later this spring or summer once it's warmed up enough to camp and I'm not homeless.

I'm not so sure about those "Alaskan Bush People" The only experience I have with Alaskan Bush People comes from here.

It was warm enough to camp this past weekend.  The air temp at fishing time was ~28 – plenty warm so I did not wear gloves or ear protection.  J. was recovering from stomach condition brought on, I am sure, by infantcomingsoonitis.  I was glad we did not camp because on the chilly walk in, J alluded to having a shot of whiskey if I had any, to warm him.  I told him he could ask, but even if I was carrying, I would not give him a drink.  You never contribute to another's delinquency when they're in a tender condition.  I cheered the boy by amusing him; he seemed to perk when I told him I was sure that the majority of fly anglers within 100 miles were pussies this particular morning, and we were tough adventurous souls.

It is always a hoot to fish with J.  And we actually learned something, truly several things.  But I must come clean on the cowboy coffee.  J did fib; he made it and it SUCKED!

And yes, the coffee was bad.  I did drink it though.

is cowboy coffee where you just pour hot water onto grounds?  no filter besides your teeth?

Yes and no.  Heat up water, add grounds, stir, let steep, throw cold water onto grounds, grounds are supposed to sink.  I didn't let the water get hot enough and the temperature difference wasn't great enough when I added cold water to make the grounds sink.  It was a bad first attempt.

Looks like a fine time...those are some great brookies.  AND you'll survived without the assistance of fleece!

Thought cowboy coffee also included a raw egg but what do I know.

Eggshells, yes. The eggwhite residue coagulates the grounds.

But I don't want to have to get a race talk from the barista.

Never heard of adding eggshells till now.  Interesting.

Mudwall made coffee each morning by settling the grounds with cold water and it was good.  Just as good as a good French press coffee.  I just sucked at it.

Yup he has a "how to". At the end, you pour out the coffee and drink whiskey

Speaking of cowboy coffee, the one in Jackson makes a mean fancy coffee.  Hit the spot one morning after sleeping in the dirt for a few nights.

Neither.  Cave woman came first.  She reproduced parthenogenetically resulting in female only offspring.  These gals then copulated with Proboscis Monkeys resulting in the ancestors of Transy.  It was an inauspicious beginning.  The early lineages eventually discovered fire, and not only warmed themselves and charred their meat with this new genius, but most of the males tried to hump it, consequentially exhausting the genetic line, and leaving us, fortunately, with only a few Transy-like beings worldwide.

It was fortuitous that we got a new start.
