The 661, the last of the largest and most powerful steam locomotives will be running back to Roanoke from Spencer, NC tomorrow Saturday. (Freaked J out with that)
Should see it from 29 from Danville up.

With a stop in Lynchburg for coal and water at 1pm , I'd love to be sitting on the deck at Apocalyptic Ale Works with a beer and a sammie as it rolled by.
Then down along 460 to Roanoke.

If you were crossing the bridge at the 2:20 point, oh shit!
So impressive.

Excellent.
Why'd you shave the dog?
Lots of reasons. It's a story and a half. Long story short, she got some hot spots that had to be shaved for treatment, she had lots of matted hair, cooler cut for her in summer, and her longer hair was tracking in lots of dirt and stuff inside of house. I think we are going to keep it real short for a while. Doesn't look as good, but low maintenance which will be needed for when the baby comes.
Was the train 100% powered by the 611? or were there diesel back-up locomotives involved?

100% powered by the 611. Pulling 8 passenger cars too if I remember.

makes sense, but she does look neat with the full crazy coat.
And yes, I like her full coat as well, but a pain to maintain.

Can pull 15 cars at 110 mph. It was going 40 mph most of the trip to Roanoke.
Spent a couple years at Ft Eustis, VA as a 65B20 - Steam Locomotive Repairman, although we mostly repaired the conventional diesel-electric engines you see today. We used an overhead crane for oil changes - took 3-4 55 gallon drums. When drained, you could lay down in the oil pan.
We kept the steamers running for training and parades. Everybody turns a head at a Steam Engine
7th Group. Resolute!
714th TBROS&DE: 714th Transportation Battalion (Railway Operating) (Steam & Diesel Electric).
Full disclosure of my "service" record: I was paying my way through (flunking out of) college by working at Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad. Got drafted in 1970, was rejected from airborne school (medical), skipped AIT and was sent to Ft Uterus, Vagina to play with the choo-choo trains. I was lucky.
