Spent many days in my teenage years driving an old raggedy-ass 2-ton truck in circles around a cornfield beside a silage chopper, then off to the pit silo to dump. Hot, loud, dusty, and paid about threefiddy an hour.

Another Thursday end o'day trip.
Got up way early and finished my drive back from Indy. O-H-I-O. F-i-x y-o-u-r r-o-a-d-s.
OK, you're not as bad as PA.

Still had some bidness to deal with, the phone kept ringing and I finally got loaded up and gone late.  b';

The ambassadors were waiting.

Water is extra milky. The lake has to be turning over. Thankfully the temps are not rising along with the color change.

Fishing was sloooow. No rises.
Threw the right dry with a soft hackle dropper. Nuttin. Let it swig. Nuttin.
Went the terrestrial route. Crackleback with inchworm. Nuttin. Crackleback with pink san juan worm. Nuttin.
Streamers? Swung a Mickey Finn. And a Fish Hawk. Nuttin.

Drank another beer and had an early dinner/late lunch.

I was not amused.

The sun was fading fast. Tied on a Rusty Comparadun and waded out. Nuttin happening in the run. THE RUN.
Waded down to the next one. Hey. Fish rising here and there.
Especially in the far scum line. With five different currents between me and it.
Waded out in the high milky water as far as I could shuffle and cast.
Some lousy drifts, some ok. Some small fish missed it, finally bought one little 6-7"er to hand. Bye skunk.
10-15 casts later brought a decent fish.

Decided to head out after that.

Just a little shadow and saturation, holmes. The light conditions changed so much in a couple hours.
The ol' Tg-1 is was it is.
Would you prefer Lomo-ish? And yes, the Smiff browns are beauts.

Better days are coming.  Might give it a try myself once they get the flows adjusted back to where us old men can stay on our feet.

Woolly Bugger

I just want clear water and bugs , I hope there will be a bumper crop of sulfurs next year.

Iphoto on the ole desktop doesn't give ya red fingers.

~1~ Ohio roads do suck. I agree. So do their strip clubs.....

~2~ Is that a Fishpond thermometer on your vest? If so, I just ordered and received one in a different color. The statements made by @Big J and @Onslow on my sucky creek report influenced me to keep a thermometer with me from now on for stream temperatures.

~3~ We'll hit that river at least once next week. I'm looking forward to it. Fishing a river like that will make anyone a better fisherman.

~4~ @Dougfish -- How was that the right dry if no fish took it? Unless, of course, it was the same fly that eventually attracted a take, just without the dropper.

~5~ I'm glad you caught a couple, @Dougfish.

It's their keeper. But I do have the thermometer, too. Use it a lot. Ben always wants to know the temp.
56 yesterday, BTW.

The right fly is only the right fly for a moment, grasshopper.
But some parachute adams, sulfurs, and puff daddies in 16-18 increase the odds.
PT and hares ear soft hackle. 16.

I've fished the Smith a few times now. Several hookups took place while fishing dries (can't remember what fly), more took place while nymphing (hare's ear or pheasant tail most likely)-(sometimes single sometimes as a dropper or tandem). One lonely fish fell to a small streamer (woolly bugger or slumpbuster).

True stats.

Any of you boys fishing the Smith today?

Dougfish

Won't be back for a week.  b';

Made it out for a few hours Saturday morning. I've been stay-at-home dad for two weeks now, so a forgiving wife let me out of the house to fish. Good morning, caught them on everything from dries to a woolly bugger. Best one of the day came on a zebra midge. Seven or eight were brought to hand.

This guy just smashed the nymph the second it hit the water. Never seen one do that before.
