I have a bunch of old cane rods in the garage that I can't do anything else with.  What do you do to remove the ferrules from the male and female sections besides cutting them off?

I'm getting ready to put together a beautiful Tonkin cane 7' 4 weight extra tip rod and have ferrules on some old rods that will fit but I did not want to have to cut them off then drill the excess material out and ruin the ferrule.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I've not done this but this is what i've heard:

QuoteThe standard method for ferrule removal is heat. I use an alcohol lamp though I have heard of some folks using a heat gun. Too much heat and you char the bamboo underneath and/or you can melt solder in multipiece NS ferrule, One piece formed ferrules -- not a problem but you still can cook the boo. If I get a stuck one I alternate heat
w/ ice water. Usually two or three cycles at most. Caution, sometimes when the glue finally lets go, the pressure build up will shoot the thing across the room. A leather glove is used to pull the ferrule off, if it doesn't launch itself. But first -- check for pins -- they may be almost invisible. Drive them in so that the ferrule clears them.

http://www.rodbuildingforum.com/ also has a good bamboo section.  Actually, they are all pretty good, mostly because they all have most of the same members posting.

All joking aside, we do have a good group of southeastern builders.  The info posted in the 2nd post is all you need, but I can't over-emphasize CHECK FOR PINS!  The can be very small, and polished into the ferrule so as to be virtually invisible.

Thanks guys, I mean it!

Ya'll have saved me at least $100.00 in hardware!

I got home this evening and started by checking for the pins and I guess I had the cheap stuff because they weren't anywhere to be found.

I was able to heat the ferrules and not mar the wood and was able to resize the current blanks.  Man, everything went together pretty well!

I'll post pics as soon as I have more time.....

Again, thanks!
