Title: Salty Salty
Post by: Big J on July 01, 2014, 07:46:56 AM

Have a college friend who recently started up a Saltwater Fishing Charter on NNK Peninsula.  He's been asking questions about saltwater fly fishing as he wants to get into it.  Got him hooked up with a setup and his first two trips were more exotic than anything I've ever been on.  First trip was to Langkawi Island and his next was to Alaska for Kings and Sockeye.  Lucky peckerhead.  Decided to make a trip up to his place to show him a few things about fly fishing.  He knows very little about fly fishing, but the man can put you on some fish and let you work them.  Plan was to fish the flats for redfish, but the cold winter and spring has delayed their arrival.  Backup plan was to fish for the residential stripers in the mouth of the bay.  This fish are 1 to 5 years old and are waiting to grow so they can join the big boys that run the east coast.  The average size is 14 to 20 inches with a few residential stripers that can hit around 30 inches.

Not your stereotypical image of coastal towns.  There was corn, corn, and more corn.

Arrived Saturday around 4 pm and the bay was too murky and wind too brutal to mess around with the fly rod.  We just decided to lounge around town and get some seafood.

This was the bomb.  Rockefeller Oysters.  Cheese, onion, bacon, and some Chesapeake Bay seasoning.

Crab legs were a must for me too.

Sun setting at the dock.

Next morning we got up as high tide was coming out of the river.  We took his jon boat out for the morning.  We were up to watch the sun rise.

Lots of duck blinds on the bay as well.

(http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m144/BigJSV2/AC09E449-DE41-4D52-8D7D-5BAA2E919124_zpsixl24noj.jpg) (http://s103.photobucket.com/user/BigJSV2/media/AC09E449-DE41-4D52-8D7D-5BAA2E919124_zpsixl24noj.jpg.html)
And lots of Osprey nests.  They are a cool bird.

(http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m144/BigJSV2/3B9B194C-0858-41F1-9F21-AB017BD5D365_zpsrqj7jhil.jpg) (http://s103.photobucket.com/user/BigJSV2/media/3B9B194C-0858-41F1-9F21-AB017BD5D365_zpsrqj7jhil.jpg.html)

We got into lots of perch and a few stripers as well at the first location.  I stuck with the fly rod the whole time while my buddy messed with the spin gear.

First ocean striper on a fly.

(http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m144/BigJSV2/8E0CDA18-2558-406C-A24E-CEE2F7893408_zpsj3ozlry8.jpg) (http://s103.photobucket.com/user/BigJSV2/media/8E0CDA18-2558-406C-A24E-CEE2F7893408_zpsj3ozlry8.jpg.html)
Another striper.

(http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m144/BigJSV2/824F441C-9DE1-4664-B80A-94C579024AAF_zpsnxcsggqs.jpg) (http://s103.photobucket.com/user/BigJSV2/media/824F441C-9DE1-4664-B80A-94C579024AAF_zpsnxcsggqs.jpg.html)
Off to location two.

(http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m144/BigJSV2/36588E31-8A31-47EC-806D-BE9A2C47F767_zpsjud9qdwu.jpg) (http://s103.photobucket.com/user/BigJSV2/media/36588E31-8A31-47EC-806D-BE9A2C47F767_zpsjud9qdwu.jpg.html)
Better striper.

(http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m144/BigJSV2/249F1825-A804-46C9-AE36-206A730F3F13_zpstyczm4zu.jpg) (http://s103.photobucket.com/user/BigJSV2/media/249F1825-A804-46C9-AE36-206A730F3F13_zpstyczm4zu.jpg.html)
Striper of the day.  Hit like a freight train behind a rock pile.

After that fishing a little bit longer and getting nothing we decided to head back for some brunch and relaxing.

(http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m144/BigJSV2/07FF6FC8-B8E2-4828-94C4-2D40B169DAF9_zpsip6vbykw.jpg) (http://s103.photobucket.com/user/BigJSV2/media/07FF6FC8-B8E2-4828-94C4-2D40B169DAF9_zpsip6vbykw.jpg.html)
His dog would fetch a tennis ball all day long if you'd let him.

Around 1 we took the big boat out.
(http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m144/BigJSV2/220EB828-BA81-4588-A708-715CF3B1A149_zpss33ecidw.jpg) (http://s103.photobucket.com/user/BigJSV2/media/220EB828-BA81-4588-A708-715CF3B1A149_zpss33ecidw.jpg.html)

Fishing was slow and the wind had picked up.  We messed around at a couple locations.  Caught some perch and my friend caught a small striper.  We messed around with the casting net and called it a day.

(http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m144/BigJSV2/D4C8FAF5-E1DC-46BC-9978-10B3F5A0FCE8_zps8c07p3om.jpg) (http://s103.photobucket.com/user/BigJSV2/media/D4C8FAF5-E1DC-46BC-9978-10B3F5A0FCE8_zps8c07p3om.jpg.html)

I'll be back up there come end of July to mess around with the flats when the drum come in.   d:b

If your ever up in the DC area and want to take the long way home, hit up my friend.  Tell him I sent you and he'll hook you up.

Nice J, I have an aunt who moved to the northern neck 30 years ago and never looked back.  It's a different world over there...I mean that in a good way.

Nice stripers but those Oysters Rockefeller needs some green in 'em!

I liked it up there.  I'm not a big ocean/beach town person, but that whole area I could get use too.

Agree on the Oysters Rockefellers as well.  Some spinach would of been a nice touch.

Well damn, that was neat.

Spent the first 11 years of my life near the bay.  The blues were effing awesome back in 79.  There were several occasions when by father and two older brothers caught 250 blues in one day averaging 4-5 pounds.

My friend had a blue take his soft plastic swimbait right at the boat.  About ripped the swimbait in half.  Seem like a fun fish, but bite tippet would be a must from what I understand.

Elf (bluefish) as we call em in Saffa have some bastardized teeth, their saliva has anticoagulant. Not a good idea to try lip land or handle much for that matter. Bleed them properlyand you got a fish fry. I get away with firing 30lb mono. Wire trace fucks up a precision bomb cast one time, shoe shine. Say, J, didn't you lip land a speckled trout? :P

Pretty cool that your camera was able to get the photo of the dog without blurring it up.  Did you manually adjust the settings or did it pick it up from the auto setting?

Nice stripers.

I always get a kick when people go to the east coast and order crablegs.  Them shits aren't any fresher than the ones in your grocer's freezer!

A big maybe.  One of the largest oyster companies on the Neck has been getting truck loads of oysters shipped from the Gulf for many years to make up for the lack of local supply.

Many people have told me they can tell the difference between the local and Gulf oysters when eating them raw. I will not eat oysters unless they are roasted.
J,  next time get Blue crabs. They will be fresh.

I don't think I could eat raw oysters.  Have to be steamed or baked for me.

Was supposed to get some blue crabs from their crab pots, but there were none caught this weekend.  There were a lot of crab pots in the bay though.  From talking to the people there, seems like the blue crabs have been lacking the past couple years, but this year is supposed to be good.

I have no favorite streams...all can disappoint at any given point in time.  They all suck now as far as I'm concerned.  Ask me again in a few days though after I go fishing again.

No, I do not prefer oysters.  I'd eat one of the Rocky Mountain varieties before I'd eat one from the Bay or Gulf.  So, I'd eat a testicle before I'd eat a filter feeder.

Raw oysters? Down the hatch, baby. Lemon juice and a dash of horseradish or a little hot sauce.
The list of what could harm me is long.  Burger King is probably more dangerous than those bivalves.

I disagree.  Years ago I was at a party and the host had gone out that day and caught a big tuna and brought it back.  He built a backyard bbq pit and roasted the fish over the coals on a rotisserie spits.  The guests could walk up with a knife and just cut off a piece and eat it.  I started off eating raw fish and continued to sample as the party went on and the fish cooked further.  It was the best fish I had ever eaten..........until years later when I went fishing with a friend at the mouth of the Chesapeake for large rockfish.  We came home and cooked them on the grill and to this day I have never had anything that compares.

Fresh broiled/baked/roasted Rockfish is really good, especially if you remove the dark meat when filleting.

I also made the mistake of letting her pick out my clothes for the trip......

That may be the saddest, most disheartening, confession I have heard, ever!   Was this part of some confused prenup or postnup agreement?  She gets to dress you?  Is this some recent fresh splinter of present-day matrimonial protocol?  Does the Dude's new Mrs. now pick out his clothes?

  It was more of a I was busy the week leading up to when we left and she packed for me kind of thing.  It was still a huge mistake on my part that shall not happen again.  It was a sad confession, but I feel better getting it off my chest.

Muddie- don't be surprised.   Did you forget everything you learned in those deviant psych classes?

While the practice, to me, seems slightly oedipal, it likely stems from pain avoidance.   In other words, if I let my wife pack my bag then I won't have to hear her bitch about my clothes.

I prefer the pain.

No excuse.  I can pack for a vacation in 5 minutes.  Her on the other hand it takes a few hours every evening for a week to think about everything she could possibly conceive wearing while away, and then 15 minutes right before we are about to pull out of the driveway.  I couldn't imagine multiplying that process times two if she had to pack my stuff.  I know what she doesn't like me to wear, but I stopped caring years ago.

Nice report. We have not seen too many Reds down this way yet either. They are busting the Cobias ass though. And I concur with the bluecrab. I have caught a bushel over the last 3 days out of 2 pots just off my bulkhead.

I was reared on raw oysters.  My preference is for the ones down near my ol' stomping grounds.  True story.  When I was in lawyer school and had an overactive brain, I read an oyster article in Garden & Gun (first mistake ... just kidding) and those sumbitches didn't even mention the south carolina/georgia/low country "cluster" oysters and they are based in Charleston, by god, South Carolina.  I'll be damned if I didn't fire off a three page email to the editor and they actually printed the thing.  Crowning moment.
