I headed up 220 Saturday morning in light traffic for a change.  I hadn't fished the Smith in a while and I was overdue.  I talked to Dean (Flyrod) on the way up there and we agreed to meet.  I stopped at the Sheetz station in Ridgeway and loaded up with gas.  I refuse to buy gas in NC unless it is a dire emergency.  I arrived in upper Bassett sometime after 2:00.  I decided to fish with midges first to try out a new one I had bought last weekend in Johnson City.  The third cast I caught a decent brown.  About 5 casts later I hooked a very big something or other.  I was seriously hoping it was going to be another brown, but I was out of luck.  It was a big rainbow of about 17 inches and fat as a butterball.  Shortly there after I caught 2 more rainbows, one fairly decent.  The wind picked up and I headed back to the car.  Dean was headed back at the same time and we decided to go further upstream.  We arrived at our second spot and hit the water.  I started out with a beetle and caught 1 fish.  There were midges everywhere and fish were sipping the surface like crazy.  I tried every midge in my box to no avail.  I remembered this top secret and very hard to tie fly TM had showed me at the Davidson one time and tied that boy on and promptly started catching fish again.  My first fish was a 14 inch brown.  I caught browns more or less steadily until Dean showed up and we headed back homewards.  It was great to be back at the Smith.  No Saturday generation, no hippie kayakers hogging the river, and I got to fish with Dean.

I was nearby trying to collect some deer hair :o  Passed on a doe in the morning and didn't see a thing at a different spot in the afternoon. :(

Nice fish!  I see you conveniently didn't get a good pic of TM's top secret fly...   b';

I didn't post a picture of the fly, because it's TM's secret fly, not mine.  If he wants to post one that will be all right with me. -0-

Nice looking browns.  Glad we got to fish some. Never seen so many bugs hatching on the Smith.  Enjoyed it Ben, hope to do it again.

Sounds like a great day on the Smith!  Nice browns there!  That rainbow doesnt look like he needed to eat another midge. :)

I still can't get over the look of those smith river browns. Amazing looking fish! bd;0

"That rainbow doesnt look like he needed to eat another midge. "  Agreed and he won't!  He was invited to the Hartsville Outdoor Club's annual wild game supper! -0-  At that size he wouldn't have lived much longer anyway.

The fly really isn't a secret at all. I kinda keep it on the down low because so many people give me crap for fishing it :P I say that eggs and aquatic worms are both naturally present in stream. This may be one of the best fly combinations since the Y2K ;D.

TM, How about tying me up a couple of more of those suckers.  I am about out.  I'll pick 'em up from you at the Pechman Center.

Tm those aquatic worms must be  living down river from the viagra plant.  5X and flyrod  actually went down to the high school and got those fish out of Dr.Jones's aquarium used for the Trout in the Classroom Project.Them two couldnt catch a caugh in a free flu shot clinic. ;D ;D ;D bd;0 bd;0
