Title: The next LOS-TU meeting on Monday October 1st, 2007
Post by: teachrtec on September 27, 2007, 16:09:57 PM
 Hello all!

The next TU meeting on Monday October 1st, 2007 will have speakers from Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy.

Hilliard Staton, the secretary of the board of trustees will present...

"Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy: saving the places you love."

David Efird, another board member, will also be attending the talk along with Zachary Lesch-Huie, their outreach intern.

The presentation will be about 45 minutes with time for questions afterwards.

Last months's speaker was Sheryl Bryan the fish biologist from the National Forests in North Carolina. She spoke on low water conditions and the effects on the trout fisheries. A brief synopsis is that most of the major creeks and rivers within the forest are spring fed which has kept the water cool enough to prevent any fish kills even with the low water. Also she spoke about upcoming projects that our chapter can assist with. Good news for all!

1- Disabled fishing accesses in the North Mills River campground area are scheduled to be funded and installed by the National forests in North Carolina and our chapter is welcome to provide labor.

2-Hickey Fork in Madison County will be the first Brook Trout restoration project coordinated by the NFNC with volunteers from many organizations. We are very welcome to help on this project as well.

3-The next watershed (on a list of many over the next few years) to get brook trout restoration in the National Forests of NC - believe it or not- (this has been a dream of mine!) are the creeks above the Hendersonville watershed dam on the North Mills River. All non-native trout will be removed and the Southern Appalachian Brook Trout will be re-introduced. What a watershed the North Mills River will be when this is complete!!!

Finally some projects our membership can get behind and utilize our volunteer base.

Hope to see you all at the next meeting!
