Anyone know of any 'glass switch rods currently on the market? I know that echo is releasing some next year but looking for something now.
I think the only currently available are custom rods, unnless their's a vintage model I'm not aware of. I know James Green out in Cali rolls glass switch blanks and I think CTS does and I know Swift is offering some now as well.
Yea Epic has one in the works. Glass has a good action for the spey cast. My biggest problem was moving too fast thru the setup. Glass would force you to slow up. What are you speying?
I'm really getting it to have something to get me excited about fishing the hooch DH this winter. I know a cool spot that's away from all crowds and believe it or not, there could possibly be some decent size fish in there. I figure a 5wt glass switch rod will be cool to cast even if I'm not catching fish. Plus I need to prepare for when I go to PNW in 2000-never.
Glass switch rod? Sounds like trouble. First off, why the fuck anyone fishes that shit anymore is beyond me. Second? If you can't rip a 90ft blast with a graphite? You'd be the proverbial fucktard driving a Honda Fit to a Tesla get together. Think twice. Glass is gay. That is all
90ft is doable with the right line. Switch/spey rods arent super fast tapered to start with. Tranny is harshing up my mellow right now. Way harsh.
SJW. You buy one and ill entertain the idea and maybe we can do a speycation somewhere between us. Not DH though.
Also if you took a 5wt to the PNW they would laugh at you. Even the bobber guys.
I would buy a spinning rod before I started this whole fiberglass fly rod thing. I just don't do glass. Feels terrible.
I ride with Tranny
Glass is like a classic car. It's not for every monkey face wearing putz.
Real men blast glass. n!n
^this douche canoe
I wish I could cast a glass rod worth a shit, but I can't. I can barely get by with a graphite. I say use the technological advances
Here, I found dis:

Forgot that option. Modifying that 8 ft featherweight to a spey rod is popular enough that there are a few places selling kits. I have the rod and I'd say it needs a heavy 5 to 6 wt line so could be an option.

Bros, allow me to be defensive here for a second.
1. Pnw reference was in the spirit of learning spey casts which I think are typically the same no matter the weight of the rod (with slight variations).
2. I pointed out and acknowledged that said rod is one dimensional and easily replaceable at best. I get that.
3. That being said, sure there are ways that make more sense to catch fish but the same could be said for fly fishing in general.
4. In all honesty I'm not sure I can cast 90 feet of line with a single hander.
Now, let's hug it out.
I'm all for a speycation. I seriously am going to take a cheap trip to pnw at some point. Probably won't catch shit but I'll be drunk the whole time and will be the guy overcasting showing off my cast. Bc would be awesome but have you seen the licensing requirements? Gawdalmighty.
Thanks bennen. That just might work. Wonder how am 8 foot two hander casts? For that money it's worth finding out. Now I just need dougfish to sell me one of them ol timey reels.
Anyone that does not enjoy a glass rod is a new-age, X-Games-type-angling whippersnapper! These upstarts should be avoided until they are further seasoned. I do however have faith that one day these parvenus will "feel the rain" and not "just get wet" (Bobbie Dylan).
SJWH, I can't cast 90', and I have never tried. No big whoop, pal.
If a glass spey makes you happy, then do it. I would not waste the air explaining such to these angling social climbers.

Swing for steelbows on the Cattaraugus...pick me up on the way.
Its easier to cast a two hander 100' anyday. That said, an 8ft switch rod isn't a switch rod. Them shits need to be at least 10ft at a minimum. You need that length to catapult line, otherwise what would be the point of using two hands.
Yeah I kind of agree. Anyone want to make me a rod for some $?
Steel has two. He may let you test drive.
My bud picked up a gig for the shoulder season on the Grande Ronde river in Eastern Oregon. Basically he mules gear dowm the river ahead of the clients and sets up camp, then fishes the runs near the camp. The guys from Sage were out last week, said they tipped him with a $600 reel.

dude - $20 bucks for the rod. $15 for the kit. Rio Outbound short 6 wt $50 bucks on the bay. 3 hours of work + dry time and your learning to cast two handed. Yea it may not be a legit "switch" rod, but it will be fun. You won't be able to cast as far or control the drag the same as you could with a "real" 10' switch rod. But if you like it and when you make that trip to the PNW, buy the Echo. You'll already have the line and mechanics down. Save the other $100 bucks (minimum) and get really, really drunk while you learn.
Youd be better served to learn to spey with a single hand rod with fighting butt. The longest rod you got, Playboy.
Spey casting is the tits. I am just not a fan of glass stuff. Too "springy" and not quick enough response time for me.
Bum has it, learn to spey with your 8wt, then move up to a switch.
I single hand spey cast all the time. I am no spey master by no means, but it is fun.
Here's the part when you're really going to question my sanity. I actually have a switch rod already (7 wt) just am real curious about spey glass. It works in my head. Since I live in the spey capitol of the world, I had kind of talked myself into another one. Fugg it; I'm taking bmadd's advice and taking my already paid for rod and $100 worth of beer to the river this Sunday. Err next Sunday since I'll be out of town this Sunday.

dont even say youll be in Myrtle Beach! Dont even! Me too, man.
I'll actually be in trout land (well more so than where I live). Hoping to get some fishing in believe it or not. No switch rods will be harmed.
Hmm, I've got a rod candidate or two, or three at home. Dammit, you got me schemin'.
The switch thing is interesting. I already employ some spey techniques on traditional rods and lines.
Let us know how it turns out Doug.
My wife and I ("MWAI"), have entered into a fair and equitable agreement about said rod. She kindly agreed to not let me buy the rod and in return I agreed to not spend $100 on beer. Happy to report all parties are satisfied with the resolution. Happy to give pointers to achieve similar favorable results in domestic negotiations.

Fixed. And that is pretty sweet.
Itll go for a grand
That's a badass rod.
I told The Bum that this rod would be a good conversion candidate, but it is in too good of a condition to bugger up. And it has a Grainger style reel seat.
9' Shakespeare 3 piece, 1380T, 1956 manufacture. Bombs out a 6' DT. But needs a 10 oz. Martin 72 to balance it....almost balances it.
A second handle and lighter reel would be sweet. $41 delivered. -0-

Problem solved. As long as you are comfortable forking up a grand. I'm going to order two tomorrow. ;D
Zeitlos Glass Switch & Spey
With these rods, we believe we have reached the holy grail of glass switch & spey rods. No past or present glass rods are in the same league!
Less effort in the cast combined with an appropriate casting flow will give you the most out of these rods.
These rods feel nothing like what you would imagine when you hear about a glass switch or a glass double-hander over 12' long. They feel light, and applying smooth control, you won't believe how fast and how powerful they are!
The 10'7" 8wt. 4 piece switch (scandi 350-380grain / skagit 410-440grain) is designed for single and double hand use no matter if you want to swing flies, strip streamers or using nymph rigs. In addition this rod makes a great beach rod for stripers and blues where you don't have to worry about the size of the fish!
Our glass double hand rods come in 12'7" 6wt. (scandi 350 grain / skagit 410grain) and 12'7" 8wt. (scandi 480grain / skagit 480-540grain) They are designed for swinging flies in medium-sized and big rivers for trout, steelhead and salmon.
Five pieces for an easy to pack-and-go spey rod. We have done our part and now the enjoyment is up to you.
