No Grayson Highlands for us...   ;)  I would like to invite you all to join the New River Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited for a workday on Big Stony Creek at Glen Alton this Saturday (6/15) we will work from 9am-1pm and a cookout lunch will be provided at 1.  This is part of an ongoing restoration project being led by our chapter, in conjunction with the US Forest Service and VDGIF.  This section of stream was formerly pasture land prior to it being donated to the Forest Service.  The Big Stony watershed contains native brook trout, wild rainbow and brown trout, and includes several miles of put and take trout water.  On Saturday we will be working to fence riparian trees to protect them from damage by beavers and deer.  This is necessary to protect the remaining canopy trees along the previously restored stretch of stream from further damage, which will help keep the stream cold enough to support wild trout.  Please join us and bring your friends and family, we can use a lot of helping hands!  Please bring your gloves and any tools you think would be helpful for building fence.  Also bring your fishing gear if you want to fish after lunch.  Please let us know if you are planning to attend and if you would like to carpool.

Directions to Glen Alton (http://goo.gl/maps/4mFA7):
From Blacksburg, VA:
1. Follow US 460 west for about 15 miles.
2. Turn right on Big Stony Creek Road, SR 635 (there is a sign that points to White Rocks Campground). Go approximately 13 miles.
3. Turn left onto Glen Alton Road, SR 722. Go across a small bridge and then follow the road to the right.  We will meet at the large gravel parking lot.

If you have never been to Glen Alton, it is truly a treat, it was formerly a farm/homestead situated on Big Stony Creek in Giles County, within the Jefferson National Forest, that was donated to the Forest Service several years ago.  More information can be found at the Forest Service website or on the Friends of Glen Alton Facebook page.

Thanks and hope to see a bunch of folks on Saturday!
