Upcoming Schedule:
5/30 8:30am TIC Release at Camp Alta Mons in Shawsville (TOMORROW)
We would like to have a couple volunteers to help with this release, see the information below.
We will have a trout release at Alta Mons on May 30 at 8:30. The last event I attended was wonderful, and all the kids wore clothing that was water-friendly allowing them to wade in the stream and view the wildlife close-up.
We have everything we need in place but it will enhance the experience to have some TU members on hand. The entire Shawsville Middle School 6th grade will be there, along with some family members and others who will participate at the five education stations. This half-day event will include over 80 students plus a bunch of rainbow trout just itching to get into that beautiful stream!
Shirley and one other volunteer will be there to there to demonstrate fly tying.  They could use an extra instructor in fly casting and another couple of TU volunteers with streamside fish release and ecology instruction.  We can use some woolly bugger materials and a couple more vises to set up tying stations if you care to bring some.

5/31-6/2 Fishing trip to Shenandoah National Park/Rapidan (THIS WEEKEND)
The group fishing trip to Shenandoah National Park will take place this weekend, May 31-June 2.  We have reserved a cabin along the Rapidan River.  From there we can fish the Rapidan, Conway, Rose, Robinson and their tributaries.  The lodging cost will be about $50 per person, depending on how many folks we have.  There are 3 spots still available in the cabin, so let us know if you would like to attend.  Folks are more than welcome to come for individual days if you can't come for the full weekend.
This is a sample of what you can expect from the Rapidan!  http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a181/jawill11/2008-04-26/IMGP3217.jpg

6/11 Agricultural and residential workgroup meeting for Cripple Creek water quality improvement plan
The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation will host an agricultural and residential work group meeting to address the water quality improvement plan being developed for Cripple Creek on June 11, 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. at the Speedwell Volunteer Fire Department, 6631 Grayson Turnpike, Speedwell, VA.
Anyone interested in participating in development of the plan may attend. The purpose of the agricultural and residential work group meeting is for local stakeholders to provide input on the types, amounts, and costs of practices needed to reduce fecal bacteria to acceptable levels in Cripple Creek. This is the first of two work group meetings that will occur during the development of the water quality improvement plan.
Background: Segments of Cripple Creek in Smyth and Wythe counties do not meet the state water quality standard for fecal bacteria. Elevated levels of fecal bacteria indicate an increased risk of illness for people who come in contact with the stream. Bacteria sources identified in the area include untreated human waste from straight pipes, failing septic systems, livestock manure and pet waste.
For more information, contact Patrick Lizon with the Department of Conservation and Recreation at 276-676-5529 or patrick.lizon@dcr.virginia.gov.

6/11 Roanoke River Watershed Open House at the Roanoke Civic Center from 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Hosted by VADEQ
The goal of the Open House is to kick off the development of a Clean-up Plan to address bacteria and sediment pollution in the Upper Roanoke River watershed. The bacteria and sediment problems were documented and studied during the development of the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) reports in 2004 and 2006. The reports were a culmination of in-depth data and watershed analysis coupled with public input. According to State law, the next step in improving water quality in the Upper Roanoke River watershed is to develop a TMDL Implementation Plan, or Clean-up Plan, for the watershed!  This Open House is designed to inform the public and to solicit volunteers to participate in working groups that will advise on the types, locations and numbers of water quality improvement projects.

6/15 Work Day on Big Stony at Glen Alton
Due to some very active beavers in the area, there is an immediate need to protect the exiting trees from further beaver damage, we will be having a work day on June 15th to repair existing fencing and to add fencing to additional trees.  This is necessary to protect the remaining canopy trees along the previously restored stretch of stream.  We will discuss this and set a times for the workday at the June chapter meeting.  Please invite other groups you may be a part of and bring your friends and family, we can use a lot of helping hands!

6/21-23 Fishing trip to South Holston in TN
Fishing trip to the South Holston River in TN on June 21-23. We have reserved cabins to sleep 10 (6 are already taken), all within walking distance of the river. The plan is get to the Holston when it's wading time Friday and stay until Sunday morning.  Plan for a steak night Friday and a Saturday night fish fry. Trip will be rain or shine. Cabins are air-conditioned and furnished with sheets and towels.  We'll need a $100 deposit by June the 5th for the cabin, food and beer. Cost will be between $100-$200 for the weekend depending on how many people go.
