COLLIER COUNTY, Fla.– First responders saved a lost couple kayaking in the Everglades Monday night.
The couple, both 67, were on vacation from New York and lost their way during a day trip. Starting around 9:30 a.m. at the Turner River Canoe Launch on U.S. 41, the pair started their solo trip with a map. Around 5:15 pm they called 911, telling authorities they were lost but not in distress, according to law enforcement.
Using GPS coordinates, emergency dispatchers were able to locate the lost travelers, according to law enforcement.
Greater Naples Fire Department, the National Park Service and North Collier Fire Department coordinated a rescue effort, starting with finding the business that rented the couple the kayaks.
they had a map... and a cell phone... probably a "smart phone", smarter than them....
what other options did they have>
1) hang out in the mangroves and wait for the sun up come up in the morning
2) use your map and compass to get back
3) don't rent kayaks to New Yorkers...

I took a helicopter ride from Athens, TN to the UT Trauma Center a while back from MED-TRANS CORPORATION. Launch was just $33,383.34 plus $320 per mile. Insurance covered almost all of the $49,744.65. I love Medicare.
Not sure what procedure code they can use for their trip. b';

I had that Med-Trans helicopter ride following a nasty fall 10/14/2019 (Google orthostatic hypotension). Got out of the CRV, stood up, turned, and walked too quickly. Did a face plant on the driveway. ACDF 3-4-5 at UT Medical Center. Total bill from UT Hospital: $63,953.00.
You'll see a Medicare Approved amount that is way lower than the list price, around 20%. You get these big bills, but ignore the first 2 from each provider. After a few months I only paid about $1,400.
Med-Trans was $49,744.65, Medicare approved $6,978.51. Typical of Medicare, but I didn't know if transport would be the same. Luckily it is. I paid about $1,200.
My total was about $2,600 from a list price of $113,697.65.
Along with Medicare, I have the full-blown Aetna supplement at $174.64 a month.
I always get a kick out of the billed amounts vs the approved amounts that service providers settle for. Apparently just part of the racket that is the American Healthcare "System"
Yes, insurance is nice. It's a shame so many people have to do without.
