I forgot to mention that we saw an eagle dive for and miss a fish on the flat water by the large sycamore tree. Also saw a dead 12" brown... couldn't determine why caused its demise .

The float bote porn shot ......priceless! And to think I have ridden in that seat and was not told of the many available features.

Just opened most recent issue of Va. Wildlife Magazine to find article on the Smith with our own Al and someone named Doug quoted.

They'll quote any jackass, I guess.

A bunch of nobodies.  The Corps of Engineers don't even know who those nobodies are.

Al

I haven't seen it yet (to cheap to subscribe :embarassed: )  DGIF is sending me a couple copies. I may sign one and send it to my buddy BW.

Hard to believe the quotes from two of our Smith River sages.

Doug: "The most resourceful way to harvest the wild Smith River browns is with natural baits (worms, mealworms, crickets, etc.) fished on long classic glass rods, held high, allowing the enticement to move normally through the deep crevasses found throughout the river."

Al: "I rarely fish the river with the guys anymore.  It just is not as much fun as it used to be.  Now, angling with the gals, that is a different, more entertaining, exhilarating endeavor. As my pals tell me, I still got game."
"Enjoy every sandwich." Warren Zevon

Ha. Sounds about right!

Woolly Bugger

Saturday afternoon I went back to the usual spot. That was a couple of days ago, so I may have forgotten some of the details. I was a bit surprised that I was the only car in the lot. I debated about wet wading and put on the leaky wader pants. I keep meaning to try and fix the leaks with an alcohol spray, but just haven't gotten around to it yet.
The rod was rigged with a dry dropper and stayed with a sulfur comparadun with a splitback. It didn't take long before a fish took the dropper. I caught a half dozen before things slowed down and the fish refused to cooperate.
A kingfisher made a noisy flyby and waxwings few about picking off invisible insects. The sun is setting earlier now so I was off the water by 7:30
Here are a few pics

I slipped down for a few overcast hours before generation. I've had good bluebird days, and slow ones, too. Lets see what a cooler, gray day brings.
Well, the first thing it brought was looow flows. And I was the only fool there.

Started euroing on a run I love. But the flows were too low to get really
good drifts. Caught one where I should have caught 5-6. Switched reels and moved downstream.
Medalist porn. I'm using a 1496 and a 1495 1/2 to counterbalance the 10' rod. One set up for euroing, one with a floating line.

Rigged up the dry dropper and went to work.

Caught the usual suspects, but picked up some huskier fish, too.
90% on the dropper. Light bites, too. In the low flow flow, they were very leisurely in their feeding. Some midges, a few big mayflies, and nothing much else happening.

I've been eating/drinking more fruit.

Got another chunky bow from a back eddy after catching 4 splashy browns there already. Dumb bow.

Boke off my rig in a tree and decided to put on a hopper since the sulphur was not getting love. They still took the dropper. Quit about a half hour later and headed out for some work. Finished with 10ish to hand.

And those reels set up for right-handed retrieve for a dextral caster are ghey!

Those reels were made when real men fly fished. 30's - 60's. And RHW was the rule.
Pansy spinning reels brought on the LHW.
Yeah those beers are ghey. Good AM beers, though.
