It has been very difficult fishing from the spit the past few seasons. The occurence of albies inside the hook has been extremely spotty. There were some comments about how easy it is to catch an albie from a boat, something to the effect that it is unfair. I would disagree and say that a boat certainly allows one to access more water and approach busting pods of fish, but that is the least of your worries. For the past several years the water surface temps have been so warm that the fish only come up for a small time period. They have also become much more selective with flies, necessitating a transition from the clousers to half and halfs, gummy minnows, and last years favorite which was an improvised version of Skok's mushmouth. I think the fishing has become very difficult. There are instances of good bites on a few random days, and indeed last year saw more activity....but I think that trying to catch an Albie from the beach is going to be very difficult unless we get some colder water temps and the bait comes in toward the break.

I would agree if you limit yourself to inside the hook it could be a long day sometimes. Follow the trawlers or run a chum slick with ground Bunker + frozen Glass Minners. Like shootin' fish in a barrel.

hey fellow nuts... the better-half and i returned from our harkers excursion.....

1) don't fergit 'quito repellent.... damn, within seconds of getting out of the jeep there must have been 20 of the blood thirsty bastids on marie and myself..... a quick ride over to the marina and 6 bucks later, that problem solved.

2) always stop in morehead on the way in and dine at the sanitary.... i have never been served a bad meal there and it's just a grand ole fish-house.... well worth the visit and the money....

3) bring toothy critter wire..... it sure does help with the landing of spaniards and blues....

4) don't stop at burger kings, mcdonalds, etc whilst traveling .... they really do suck... next time i'll make the time to make samwheeches for the drivin.... 6-7 hours each way....

5) rob p., at the harkers island marina, is well worth the booking.... he had no problem at all in designing our friday trip out to accomodate my wife, who has never been out in a boat before, and to be honest, is terrified...... it made my trip to see the joy on marie's face as she watched dolphin porpoising in the sound, horses grazing on shackleford, the lighthouse, birds diving for lunch, the big ships at beaufort inlet, and the occasional busts that i cast too.... but best of all..... the wind shimmerin' her hair as we cruised... she had an absolute great time on the boat and i owe it all to rob for making it grand for her....

6) ya know, the fishing was secondary, but after we dropped marie back on the dock at the cabin (and yes, i did go out and sit on it one full-moon eve drinkin' beer and singin' that ole otis redding song.. sittin' on...) to do some serious fishin....

...... caught some blues and spaniards.... didn't come across any albies.

anyways, i plan to return to harkers for some serious fishing next month...

most likely, i'll be staying at the same shack that marie and i stayed in for a few days before or after the first weekend.

the weekend for me will be committed to the industry stuff that goes on down there.

there may be a bunk bed open... i'll know more later as my buddy with the boat is incommunicado right now.... up on snowbird.

That's great Walt. Sounds like it was a good trip.  My wife and I are heading down to Beaufort in a week and a half.  We've got a day booked with Horsley out of HI.  Hopefully the weather will cooperate and it won't be too rough for the wife.  A few fish would be nice too...

By HI do you mean Harkers or Hatteras Island? I thought Horsley was out of Oregon Inlet area.

Brian and Sarah move their operations to Harkers in mid-October thru Thanksgiving for the blitzes. They're based out of Harkers Island Marina....

Thanks Walt.  Yes, that's me with actually 2 of 3 drum.  Brian put me on  30, 40, and 42 pounders. THey were up on top busting like albies if you can believe it.  It was a real blast.  Tons of bait.  Loads of spanish, blues, and small albies.  Weather could not have been better.  0--0

With the reports coming from up north and all the baitthat they have at the Cape...things are shaping up for a really good year.  Hope you kill it.  I'm going back the 27th and 28th.  It will still be early, but hopefully some bigger alberts will be there on bigger bait.
