It's only fitting that Jacob and I fish together on the last day of the year.
The only day of 2023 we have fished together! WTF!

I have done less small stream fishing this year than any year that has passed.
We had a 3 day brookie trip get blown out by rain in late April.
Then the rain quit. Flows went down. Stayed down.
I left the small streams alone.

Off we went. We had lots of catching up to do.
It has been quite the tumultuous year for both of us.

The good news is, we still remember how to fish for these guys.
I scored on the 8th cast.

It was a lovely high 40's day. Little wind.
A great day for a walk in the NF.

We started to get into better plunge pool water.
More fish, and the bigger fish started to come into play.
J can report on the big uns. Since he caught em.

We really need to hit this with dry flies in the Spring.
We hit the end of the line and hiked back down.
The trail had not been maintained for many years.
Lots of wood for the two fat boys to navigate.

Yessirree!  p;-  It's fine to see specks again! Like you, I've been leaving small streams alone for the past few months due to low water, then the spawn. Gotta get out again.

2023 has been bad on the fishing front.  Way too many obligations on home and family front.  Lots of health issues in family.  Doug and Keith count their fishing time in days, I did hours.  6 hours in 2023.  Doubled it on my fishing day on New Years Eve

Good catching up with Doug on a small stream.  We picked a stream we knew would produce and a section Doug has never fished.  It paid off.

Then this brute happened.  I worked a big hole with a streamer. Then me and Doug started flogging it with heavy flies.  After about the 30th cast from each of us, this one finally decided to eat.  :o

Then this big male followed fly out of a run and then stayed posted up at tailout after my fly left the pool.  In about 3" of water 2' from where I'm towing over tailout.  Still as I could be I flicked a roll cast a foot in front of him and he ate.  Only aggressive fish I came across, all other bites were light and deep.

Cheers to the end of 2023 and hopefully 2024 will bring me more fishing.

Onslow

Glad you all were able to squeeze in a goodern before the year ended.

I like the dingy water.  Gin clear water be damned. No nutrients, no good fish.

Spring creek. Always milky green.
Sometimes mud is added.

Glad to see Big J back on the water, better late than never. Two super brookies to show he still has it.

Good job, you two!

Recently we've had an easterly wind here in the Grove.  I knew there were nonindigenous foreigners one watershed over the mountain to the east; I caught a whiff of processed meats and pretentious beer.
