Title: Big Boyz Don't Cry...
Post by: Dougfish on May 05, 2019, 20:41:16 PM

It's all downhill. To the promise of big brookies.
So back down we went. Big J, Fin and I schemed. Streamer eater became number 4 in the shotgun seat. The weather looked dicey. It's a big drainage and a lot of rain was forecast. But as we got closer, we discovered again why it's called a forecast.
It was a go. I do love this stream. Fuk it. Game on.

Fin, the eater and I struck out early Friday with heavy packs and expectations. We cruised, slogged, slipped, struggled, detoured around windfalls and eventually got to our campsite. Tent up, hammocks up, just in case poly up. Firewood gathered, bear containers dealt with. On to fishing. Fin, with no photo documentation, hit up some tribs. Alex and I hit up the main.

Alex on the board on the second cast? Dayum.
And we continued to catch at a fair pace.

We did our damage and backtracked to camp to get a fire started before said rain(?). Alex dug into his pack and whipped out a sawzall!

Holy crap. Newbie of the year award!
I started on warming my 5 lbs of frozen White Bean Chicken Chili and Fin reported back with great success. About the time I rang the dinner bell, J stumbled in after working until 3 and hitting the road. We ate it all, stocked the fire and settled in awaiting the rain. The last turned in about 10:30? and the rain started 15 minutes later. Off and on pitter patter.
Coffee time? No rain.  d:b
Alex and I went low. Fin and J went high.
This stream was totally new to Alex. We walked 3? miles downstream before starting to fish back. And we hit some water that was new to me. 5 years, 7+ trips, new water?  :o  Like I said, big drainage.
Risers were slow to come. Sporadic and varied bugs coming off.
Most damage was done on the dropper.

J has better camp pics. Basically, we all showed up within a half an hour of each other and J started dinner. We were beat, managed a good fire, got full bellies, stuff cleaned up, bear bag hung and settled down.
The rain started.  p;-
We moved under the poly tarp, bullshitted for an hour and hit the hay.
Up at dawn, broke it all down and headed up the hill. 3.2 miles down is meh. 3.2 up when you're not in the best of shape?
Big boyz don't cry.
Lots of breaks. We got there.

Cheers gents. The best days on the beast.

Needs more camping gear pics, particularly those items that are petro based.  Hiner hasn't been jacked up lately.

This looks thoroughly enjoyable.

Being a stats geek, I need measurements of those specimans

I'll get my pictures up tomorrow.  Have a few of campsite and packs.  Average size fish was 7 to 8 inches.  A lot of 10" fish.  A handful in the 11" - 12" range.

Out with the ax and in with the sawzall.....does this mean next trip Doug takes a graphite rod?

BTW- great report and those brookies!

We had an axe, 2 hand saws. Low miles.
The stream was almost big enough to to euro slut with the new graphite. But, no.

Fortunately or not, I could have bailed out of the vehicle last week and got a shot of those, and Gaywings in the parking lot about half he distance from home. Nature makes the rules. Jake has good pics of open blooms from upstream. What da fuk?

Saw some gaywings while taking a leak on my way to work at Little Dry Fork Wilderness last week.

Glad you mentioned them because I do not recall ever seeing them before, nor do I recall ever hearing about them.

Forecast about scared us me off hitting this stream, but the day before we decided screw it, lets hit it.  Very good call.  Water levels were prime.  Scattered showers missed us during the day.  Only rained Friday night for a little while and than a good chunk of Saturday night.  Rain stopped for the hike out Sunday morning. Perfection.

Saw two bald eagles on this trip.  One on the drive in and the other on the drive out.

Guys were already down there on Friday when I started the hike in solo Friday evening.  Easy 3 miles downhill.

Lots of scenery to keep the hike interesting.

Got to camp and Doug had some chili going.  Fire already started. Game plan for next day discussed.

Next morning coffee served and hit the trail upstream with Fin.

Said goodbye to everyone and headed to visit my pets on a different stream.

Was disappointed.  Caught a massive brookie out of here in fall.  A couple big trees fell into the pool and it is now nearly impossible to fish.

But was graced with presence of this bow.  Probably the best fighting small stream trout I've landed to date.  He didn't want to get in the net.

Got home and pissed off the wife with all the ramp smells.  Ramp butter and ramp eggs 4 dayz.

Great stuff all around. J, nice rainbow. Despite their presence being a little disturbing at times, I agree that they kick ass. Small stream girthy rainbows have that spunk to 'em.

Everything that I absorbed from this report only saddens me more as I realize my time in the woods and water has diminished so greatly.

The other thing that saddens me even more deeply is the sight of Doug's legs and rolled down socks.

Rock it, brothers. I'll contribute at some point again when time avails itself. I'm yearning for a few days of tent time, cold water with trout, and campfire food smells all wrapped up in a nice, cozy layer of quietness and solitude.

The most impressive story we forgot to tell is there was only one other couple camping back there.  They were a husband and wife with their small little dog.  They hiked down the worst/most unmaintained trail in the area.  It was roughly 800 ft of elevation loss in 1.5 miles.  Kicker was, wife had a torn meniscus.  Doug and Streamereater talked with them and said the wife wasn't too happy with the husband.

And we saw him fishing. A newbie two handed caster. And I don't mean spey.

His ass was grass. Packing up a wet big ass tent and a big ass canopy and hauling it all up a choice of two gawdawful trails. And her in his ear and up his ass the whole way.

The other great side story is Jacob finding some ticks crawling on him while fishing. Neil then reportedly took off his pants to check his tender bits.

Wrecked my mind on Driver's "Jelly" and how it related to your adventure – at a loss on the meaning.   I had no idea we'd incorporated middle-school girl lingo into our angling vocabulary.  If the origin is elsewhere, then I apologize to the middle-school females.  "Jelly" now ranks up there with "Epic".

Hell yeah, that's what it's all about there. Great report!

Wish we had specks that size down here.

WB, I live near there, we used to hike the Boogerman a few times a year. One of my first dates with my wife was a 15-mile hike starting at the Rough Fork trailhead and crossing over the mountain into the Caldwell Fork drainage that the Boogerman is on, and back across the divide lower. down. She had a good time, so I figured she might be a keeper. :)
