Sounds like a big spill.....800 Olympic size pools. :o

Accountability...and heavy fines, plus cost to restore the watershed and surrounding lands.

This is comedy GOLD.....

QuoteAlthough video from the scene shows dead fish on the banks of the tributary, he said that "in terms of toxicity, until an analysis comes in, you can't call it toxic."

I haven't read the article yet. But, whoever made that comment is either the dumbest, most ignorant motherfucker on the planet or the biggest fucking douchebag asshole on the planet! I'm guessing the term "biggest fucking douchebag asshole on the planet" applies to this guy since I'm betting he's involved with the company that caused the sludge spill. Will give you my final analysis after I look the article over.

Yep, Gil Francis is the "biggest fucking douchebag asshole on the planet". He should get into politics...I hear there's a senate seat up for grabs in Chi-Town and it's "fucking golden". Hope he's got some $$$ because I don't think they'll give it up for "fucking nothing".  o-o

They could have waited a coule of days until that lame-ass, lame duck idiot asshole of a President we're stuck with made that sort of crap legal!

>>The Bush administration finalized rules yesterday that will make it easier for mountaintop mining companies to dump their waste near rivers and streams<<

Worst fucking President EVER!

Peddler- take this garbage somewhere else.  This was a TVA accident.  If you want to blame someone then blame TVA.

Merry Christmas!   0--0

I agree with Beetle!!

Just think, less them 30 days from now and it will be all on the other guy. I have noticed they are really back peddling on some of their promises. The story line now is "things are much worse off now then when you elected us - sorry"

Merry Christmas guys and gals - As bad as things may be we still live in the best country in the world and there are still millions of folks that would love to trade places with us.

EPA PR machine in 'cleanup' er... 'damage control' mode.  >:(  Plus he says 'four to six weeks' to clean this mess up...ya right...unless he's predicting a bunch of rain during that time for 'sufficient' runoff into the watershed.  Let's hope the local/state politicians can resist any special Christmas 'gifts' from TVA/EPA this year.........   :-\

It will probably come back as "toxic", coal ash usually has arsenic and other heavy metals, but is at levels that could have long term effects.  Ash has a really small particle size.  I'd guess there would be a short term fish kill from the particulates getting caught in the fish's gills.  Any fish biologists out there that can weigh in on this one?

Sounds like TVA is not too good at assessing the strength of retaining walls, hope they have done a better job with the earthen dams on the rivers!  Could you imagine what would happen if the upper dam on the SOHO blew out?   :o

I like this quote

TVA spokesman Gil Francis has said the fish may have died from the freezing cold that contributed to the breach, not pollutants.

Every one involved will play the finger pointing game, instead of concentrating on the clean up.

Damn shame.........

The sad thing is this has happened twice already on this river.  The upper clinch, in Russell County, Virginia, got hit by heavy spills in 1967 and 1970.  The 1967 spill killed off 50+ miles of the river.

Coal Ash Spill Is Much Larger Than Initially Estimated

Now the real news is taking it seriously http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/27/us/27sludge.html?_r=1&hp (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/27/us/27sludge.html?_r=1&hp)

Quote
The amount now said to have been spilled is larger than the amount the Authority initially said was in the pond, 2.6 million cubic yards.

classic...

OK, I'll bite.

Peddler, your ability to oversimplify complex issues amazes me.  How wonderful it must be to live in your black and white world.

You bitched about the high cost of gasoline six months ago.  Obviously you think cheap energy is your god-given right.   You bitched about oil company profits, ignoring the their small profit margins and the huge scale of their business.

You whine about the state of the auto industry.  You post articles that seem to come down on the side of bailouts for the insustry...because they make something (I actually agree on the manufacturing issue, but I think organized bankruptcy is the better option).  Got to keep those American workers in business.

You say Obama isn't your boy.  My guess is that you would have preferred Hillary.

So, do you want to ban mountaintop removal?  Raise the cost of electricity?  Put all those West Virginia coal miners out of work? Did you read Hillary's position on mountaintop removal during the campaign?

By the way.  That Teddy Roosevelt quote you pulled off the liberal blogs and keep posting over and over.  I'm pretty sure that if ol' TR was still alive and read some of your posts, he'd puch your sorry ass right in the nose.

Alright Flatlander, I admit to bitching about a lot of things that have happened in the recent past. It's not that I didn't like what was going on, it's just that I saw that a couple of squalking-heads on the radio got filthy rich doing just that so I thought I would give it a shot.
No one sent me a frickin' dime so I'm back to just nodding my noggin' in a happy, I don't give a shit way.  ;D

Jack,
Being pissed off by how Clinton got treated by a bunch of conservative "entertainment" radio hosts only goes so far in supporting "the I hate George Bush" and "shoot your own country in the foot" movement that's been going on. You guys just don't do the work on this stuff.  You bitch about Rush Limbaugh, then get led around by the nose by the liberal press and blogosphere.

I don't support mountain top removal, but it's been going on for nearly 40 years and there hasn't been an administration during that time that hasn't adopted a pro-coal industry stance.  Hell, the Clinton administration backed an appeal and overturned a ruling that would have essentially banned coal mining in the eastern US and stopped this bullshit.  The so-called "fill rule" that Bush just made legal was actually proposed under Clinton, but was never fully enacted before he left office.  Dumping crap in stream beds has always been allowed...this "100 foot buffer"  is a bunch of crap. You can't blow the top off a mountain and not fill in the valleys.  I don't agree with it, but it seems putting coal mining operations out of business in West Virginia doesn't sit well with the state government there.  Apparently the tax receipts on rafting trips down the Gauley won't fill the state's coffers alone.

This country has an energy problem.  We aren't supposed to mine or burn coal.  We can't build nuclear plants.  Can't drill for more oil or gas.  Can't build dams.  Apparently wind and solar are our only options, as long as the wind mills and solar panels aren't in our back yards.  My car doesn't run on wind power.  Somebody has to make the tough decisions.  Bitch all you want, but everything isn't black and white.  I once heard Clinton speak rather eloquently on the subject of policy formulation.  He lamented the public's failure to "see the big picture"...to fully understand the complexities involved in policy-making.

I also read where we the tva customers in TN will be paying for the cleanup. They've already hit us with a 27% rate increase! What a bunch of morons...
